Isayama once said that Eren is a “slave” to the story, that Eren’s development is dragged along by the plot, and he had difficulty understanding Eren’s character.

With this in mind, I love it that upon entering the Marley arc, Isayama is raising questions about Eren’s character through the voices of Eren’s oldest friends - Armin and Mikasa.

I believe it is Isayama questioning himself about this character he created, about the mysteries and the many facets of Eren’s true personality. He is also giving a warning to the readers about a new stage that Eren has moved onto - that Eren has left his old friends behind again. And it provokes the readers to rethink: just who is this boy whose story we have been following all along?
