On July 6th, 2006, the very first Hetalia strip was posted to Hima’s blog. Now, 20 years later, the fanbase is still going strong, creating every beautiful fanworks showcasing out love for this series. With over 180 pages of content, Draw a Circle, That’s Hetalia! aims to showcase and and Celebrate not just Hetalia itself, but also this amazing fanbase that has grown around it. How do you make your characters so expressive? I really love how lively the expressions look in your art and want to achieve that with my own ^^

I also look at Norman Rockwell's work or the character expression sheets from animated movies <3

The pinterest albums of Character Design References works very well too for any character art, not only facial expressions but body language and silhouettes

Hii I was wondering if you could give some tips and tricks for expressions. I love the way you draw them it just scratches that ich in my head <3333

Thank you AAAA Paying attention to detail and looking for many references to expressions is, I would say, the key (besides trying to put them into practice).

These are some of the things I do:

I have fun making faces in the mirror and taking selfies not to look pretty but to be expressive

I like seeing unusual facial features that fall outside the current beauty standards seen everywhere.

I'm drawn to asymmetrical expressions and features; there's a tip that goes something like this, I don't know how to explain it with words:

Look for references online like "expression sheets." There are both illustrations and photos. Trying to imitate them, but using other characters, really helps practice expression, regardless of the different face shapes you might have.

Exaggerating the flexibility of the eyebrows and mouth, and not being afraid of wrinkles, is very helpful too!

oooo. why do you consider prussia to be the 4th baltic? ive never heard that headcanon before!

I think that because Prussia's first "oficial place" began in Konigsberg, and Konigsberg was in the Baltic region (nowadays called Kaliningrad).

I also have a headcanon that Gilbert also represented the ancient Prussians /Baltic Prussians, which would make him more Baltic haha.

But many people prefer the idea that Prussia was born alongside the Teutonic Order (In Acre, Holy Land, so far away fron germanic or baltic territories) and that he helped eliminate the Baltic Prussians (and then appropriated the name Prussia), so it's quite a story.

The Baltics won the poll, woohoo! And I consider Prussia part of the Baltic in my headcanons, so I wanted to include him, but not directly (in case someone doesn't like that headcanon). What do you think? You can use any image you want; I tried to calculate what would work well for photocards and Polaroids, but you can print any image smaller than 9.4 x 11.8 cm (3.7 x 4.3 in) and it will fit <3
