Self-Diagnosis: A Master Post of Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Articles Written By Professionals
“Self-diagnosis is prone to error and may be potentially dangerous if inappropriate decisions are made on the basis of a misdiagnosis. Because of the risks, self-diagnosis is officially discouraged by governments, physicians, and patient care organizations. Even physicians are discouraged from engaging in self-diagnosis, because doctors also make mistakes in diagnosing themselves. If the self-diagnosis is wrong, then the misdiagnosis can result in improper health care, including wrong treatments and lack of care for serious conditions.”
Instead of relying on tumblr posts how about we rely on actual doctors? Yes? Yes. I used my school library (Ebsco) to locate some texts, and each will be sourced MLA style or sourced with the author’s name/credential. No doctor will be for self-diagnosing when it comes to complex illnesses.
Just to mention because I know a lot of people might, but not being able to go to a professional and get a diagnosis is sadly a common thing…however, this is not an excuse to go and diagnosis yourself. The desire of wanting to relate to someone is normal, and having a diagnosis to do this sound appealing…but not healthy or helpful to the mentally ill community and is a major reason why mentally ill people fear opening up about their illness in case someone thinks they are faking it. Instead, why don’t you try relating to people that have similar symptoms (ex: hallucinating, self harm )?
Self-diagnosing is harmful to mentally ill individuals/doctors and is dangerous, as explained below. Most websites that offer tests are doing so in order to get traffic to earn money, not to help you.
