in an arthurian setting, hans's ancestry follows that of libuše, who will be a stand in for eliška, and přemysl and the seven bohemian mythical princes as documented in chronica boemorum: hans is the great grandchild of eliška (libuše) and přemysl (capon), the grandchild of the first prince čeněk (nezamysl), and the child of the second prince jeschke (mnata). the third prince is vojen, mnata's son, who i reckon would be hans, though i'll spell the name as vojan (pronounced voy-yahn) for the hans / jan diminutive. and as vojen's son is vnislav and vnislav is the described as the fourth prince, vnislav would then be hynce. and as hynce has a daughter named marketa, the line then continues through her husband victor's name (křesomysl), and then through their son neklan (though they also have a daughter, and only a daughter in canon, by the name of johanna.) since hanush isn't in the line of succession, as it passes from first born son to first born son and hanush is the youngest child and the second born son of čeněk (nezamysl), hanush is, well, hanush, though hanush still stands as regent prince / regent lord as jeschke (mnata) dies in hans's youth. the story follows canon, with hans instead the prince of pirkstein and rattay, except hans flees to prydain and camelot to become a knight in king arthur's court as sir vojan, or sir hans / sir jan, seeking a life of adventure and chivalry rather than of politics and princehood. in the canon arthurian timeline, hans's son is still sired by henry, either a bohemian commoner or a prydain commoner who, too, sought to serve king arthur — think along the lines of lancelot and galehaut. relationship permitting, though, in another timeline, hynce is the son of Hans and someone else, but hynce remains an important and necessary addition to the story, a la lancelot and galahad.

hans after the prologue of the second game and before the wedding is endlessly fascinating to me. only the smallest of glimpses into hans' life then are offered to and shared with henry, but the small glimpses are, again, so fascinating. if you ask the innkeeper in zhelejov after hans, you'll be told, paraphrasing, that hans was there, drinking and carrying on with a "rough crowd," who also paid for his drinks. no one believes that Hans is the lord ofpirkstein, and i have no reason to believe that the "rough crowd" he was with in zhelejov believed him either. he charmed the ruffians somehow, then, and i love that. he is charming! but then there's also the poaching that hans does for coin. he's good at hunting, he says, and that much is true: it isn't difficult to beat him at collecting more hares in the first game, but he says before that he's been hunting "since [he] could walk." not to mention that he's said to be a master marksman by the gamekeeper and also by zizka. him choosing to hunt for money makes sense, then, especially since it isn't "unbecoming" of a noble. i'm sure poaching is unbecoming of a noble, although he neatly explains it away as the situation being extreme enough to warrant it. but why wouldn't he hunt hares and wolves? hares are difficult targets, and wolves are dangerous targets, but he'd net some groschen by selling the hare pelts, if nothing else, as well as for hunting wolves that are terrorizing local shepherds' flocks. it seems that someone turned him on to poaching, perhaps even that "rough crowd" he was with.

it's also evident that he is struggling without henry. while it's fun to say that hans is a damsel in distress — and sometimes he is — hans is more than capable of taking care of himself. but Hans is right: the situation he and henry have found themselves in is dire. and while henry is unfortunately familiar with fighting to survive, hans isn't. and hans flounders. hans tried to hunt hares, but his hands shook too much from the cold, from hunger, from fear, to hit his mark. he tried to hunt wolves, but his first attempt went horribly awry, and he was too afraid to try again. he tried to offer his service as a bellator, but the select few who believed that perhaps he could wield a sword didn't need his sword. perhaps he thought of deigning to menial, peasant work, but he couldn't relinquish what little pride he was left clinging to, nor could he risk shaming the capon family by being seen hauling sacks and digging latrines, because a lord seen doing such work would shame his family, regardless of how dire the circumstances may be, and hanush certainly drilled that into his head — and how much shame had hans already brought upon his family with his womanizing ways and his childish, devil may care attitude? so hans struggled. hans floundered. hans slept in haybeds in lofts and in abandoned camps and hoped that no one would find him. he wore raggedy clothes that he found or were given to him by goodwives, along with half stale loaves of bread, who felt sorry for him. it's the most difficult time of his life and the most humbling. it's difficult. it's grueling. it's frustrating. but he remembers that taste of freedom almost fondly. as damaging as it was to his pride as a lord and as a noble, it bolstered his pride as a man:

he could survive outside of the walls of pirkstein and rattay — for the most part.

once again thinking of hans' relationship with gender and how gender overall is such a "performance," especially in the 15th century. is all of hans' masculinity a performance? not at all. by personality, hans is the epitome of "medieval masculinity." he's associated with reds and golds. he dresses in finery. he's muscular and strong but slender as a nobleman is expected to be, but he has the strength to sweep women (and men!) off of their feet. he's interested in and is skilled at hunting, not to mention his skill in swordsmanship and in marksmanship. he's a knight. he's brave, he's loyal, he's just. he's also a man of god. he gallivants with women, "wooing" them with his charisma and his scholarship as well as with his physical prowess, but he's "chaste," lest he "father a bastard" and go against god. he's a knight. he's a bellator. he's a man of god and of nobility. but certain aspects of hans' personality and actions are affected. hans is interested in women. hans is attracted to women. and, yes, i think he truly is that down bad for women. but he does overcompensate. courting women is expected of him. he is expected to take a wife. and he'd like to have a wife ! but hans is interested in men as well. hans is attracted to men. as a man, that's already an offense. but as a trans man — an anachronistic term here and therefore not what hans would consider himself but regardless — he thinks it an even larger offense. in the 20th century, trans individuals were tolerated and would even, at times, be afforded gender affirming care as long as they stated that they would conform to gender roles and, therefore, heteronormativity. a trans man was to be a heterosexual, masculine man, while a trans woman was to be a heterosexual, feminine woman.

that's the 20th century, of course, but gender roles and heteronormativity have been staunch for centuries; it isn't far fetched to say that a trans man, in the case of hans, was expected to conform entirely to masculinity. and it isn't necessarily hans' attraction to men that would put his masculinity into question. to penetrate is to be masculine. to be penetrated is to be feminine. although a man who was caught in the act of penetrating another man would be accused of sodomy, his masculinity would not be in question. the man who was receiving penetration, however, would most definitely have his masculinity put into question, and he would be labeled a sodomite and worse. that is the world hans lives in. hans would have the belief burnt into him, then, that his enjoying being penetrated is an inherently feminine trait, even if he were a cis man. but hans is not a cis man. and to hans, enjoying being penetrated as a trans man is an even greater betrayal. a man "shouldn't" enjoy being penetrated, and a man already "shouldn't" have, as it was called even in medical documents, a cunt. and to enjoy being penetrated there? the thought alone that he may like that was humiliating enough, made all the more humiliating upon a drunken night of self exploration. the study of physiology is in its infancy in the 15th century. they believe in humourism, for god's sake. hans wouldn't know that what he's experiencing is entirely normal, and that someone's preferred position isn't at all indicative of their masculinity nor their femininity — it's indicative of their enjoyment of internal stimulation. that's it. it isn't only that, however, that troubles hans: it's hans' desire for a family, and what that means for someone like him. hans couldn't produce an heir by impregnating jitka. were hans to have an heir of his blood, he would have to carry the child — and hans isn't against that. he wants a child. he's said so in canon. but carrying a child, even in the 2025th year of our lord, is considered "inherently feminine." in the 21st century, people are still laughing at "mpreg," many who say they're allies, and are still saying that it's weird and that it's gross, not at all taking into consideration that many, many trans men have carried children, pre and post transition, and want to carry children. and those people laugh and say that it's "weird" for a reason they often refuse to disclose or acknowledge: they believe that it "defies gender roles" to an "unacceptable" degree for a man to carry a child. to this day, there are those who claim to be allies that believe in and perpetuate such harmful rhetoric such as gender essentialism. it happens now. naturally, then, a trans man in the 15th century will likely struggle immensely with the thought that he wants to have biological children. hans certainly does. being with child is, again, "inherently feminine." and coupled with the fact that he thinks himself "feminine" for enjoying penetration, required for conception at the time, it's difficult. and all of that along with being a nobleman? it's a nightmare.

but hans comes to terms with it all. throughout the series, he becomes more and more comfortable with who he is, and he becomes more and more comfortable with his masculinity. he realizes that nothing will take being a man away from him, because he is a man, and manhood isn't defined by one's behaviors and actions. he's a man because he's a man. janosh enjoys cooking and collects flowers in the fields behind the devil's den. henry can treat a wound as well as any bathmaid and can identify herbs and flowers simply by appearance alone. zizka can sew, and hans has caught zizka many, many, many times singing hallelujah domine to himself. adder is terrified of spiders and can't hunt worth a damn. kubyenka bathes with lavender soaps, and the dry devil is very fastidious with his hair. captain bernard cooks and cleans for his wife, and even hanush wears floral, "feminine" perfumes. hell, hans probably even meets someone while in trosky or kuttenberg who's transmasc and has carried a child, because representation is so important. hans' son, then, is hans' biological son, and by default with henry, and though the pregnancy was posed as jitka's, having had a child is something hans is immensely proud of himself for. hans struggled with dysphoria during that time, and hans still, from time to time, struggles with it, but hans comes to be a very proud, very self assured man who allows nothing and no one but himself to define who he is.

the capon family is a branch of the ronovci family tree. hans’s great grandmother was born eliška ronovci of leipa, the only child of the founder of the lords of leipa upon the establishment of castle leipa in 1287. in 1321, eliška married a man, newly declared a nobleman by king charles, with the surname capon as an homage to his former family trade — chicken farming — and it’s then that the capon family branch was founded. eliška would have two children with her husband: their oldest child a son, and their youngest child a daughter who left for prague in her twenties and never married. their son was čeněk capon of leipa. čeněk was arranged to marry jutte horvath of bürgstein, the only living child of the ailing lord of polná. it was upon jutte’s marriage to čeněk in 1355 that ownership of polná was passed to the lords of leipa. the former lord of polná retired in castle bürgstein, the castle čeněk built in honor of his wife. čeněk and jutte had three children: jeschke, kateřina, and hanush. their oldest son, jeschke, was set to inherit leipa, while their youngest son, hanush, was set to inherit polná. it was the ronovci family’s close relationship to john of bohemia, king charles’s father, that inspired the king to bestow upon the lords of leipa the town of rattay on sasau in 1374, of which jeschke chose to inherit upon coming of age, with hanush then inheriting Leipa. jeschke had a relationship with commoner hedvika of dubá and married her after her father was elevated to knighthood for his long time service to čeněk in 1376 — a political move likely influenced by hedvika's pregnancy. it was in 1378 that jeschke built the lower castle in rattay, named pirkstein for his mother who now had two castles named for her, where he would live with his wife and daughter. in 1383, seven years after the birth of their first child, a daughter by the name of čeněka, jeschke and hedvika’s second and youngest child was born. hedvika would die soon after of sickness and complications from the birth. jeschke would fall to bandits not long after, as would jeschke's oldest child, leaving his youngest orphaned and in the care of his father and, later, his brother, who served as the regent lords of rattay and pirkstein and will continue to serve until hans comes of age. though hanush and hans are the last surviving members to carry the capon name, other surviving members of the capon-ronovci family include the capons of polná: hans’s grandmother jutte, aunt kateřina, and cousins.
