guh i managedt to finish it... the weather was killing me in the past couple of days... i might rewatch ltelv just for the one scene where robespierre says that its really hot summer
the sound you’re hearing is an 18th century execution call on the snare (played by my little brother!). this one is american, but a similar one may have played during the executions. the revolutionaries would, of course, not have been brought before the guillotine in their wigs and nice coats, but i drew them so to make them maybe a tad more recognizable. from left to right, it is georges couthon, augustin robespierre, antoine saint-just, and maximilien robespierre.
Dracula Daily can be for anything in the public domain.... so why not some non-fiction? LEF will send out, approximately weekly, a letter (of varying length) relevant to the French Revolution on the relevant date. We will begin on 14 Juillet 1789 and slowly make our way to 1794. People can hop on and off the train at any time, and "necroposting" is completely fine.

Because of the long cycle of this subscription, every new month there will be an "off-season" letter, which can be from any point in the French Revolution, or outside within reason, so you can expect four regular letters and one additional letter every month.

Sorry for personal posting on frev but I'm weighing up taking the history major next year with the likely goal of eventually going into research-- how is it career-wise for you all who've gone down that path? What sort of degree path got you to where you are and was it worth it?
Wanted to make a Robespierre timeline sort of piece (and will probably finish it later!) but my composition is looking a bit rocky so here's like half of it done for the time being.
#2 was originally meant to be from 1788 but he looks a bit young so maybe it's from his earlier lawyer days.
Different topic, did you guys know there's a musical about Robespierre by Takarazuka? It's lots of fun and they give him a love interest named Marianne of all things, which is a fascinating choice..It's not on my frev playlist given it's not on YouTube but I am thinking of translating it from the original Japanese if I can be bothered, and will add it then!
I thought that since Scurr seemed to dislike Robespierre so much in the earlier sections, it would only get worse with the Terror, but she seems to have put her personal beef with him aside once things started looking more severe. To be fair, I don't really have any other solid reference point for his involvement in the Terror outside this book yet, so maybe I just can't see the bias in her perspective, but idk, it read to the inexperienced eye at least as pretty balanced. Made a point to say he wasn't a dictator, though he for sure played a prominent part in the terror all the same.
In light of this, I understand where the positive reviews are coming from now, the ending calls back to the sympathetic, almost nostalgic tone of the intro + the terror section kinda makes you forget that she spent the better part of the book slamming him for petty and unnecessary reasons.
It seems a big issue with Robespierre was Supreme Unrelatability (...autism?) which makes him difficult to sympathize with, especially for Scurr apparently.

Damn Robespierre's final defense speech is crazy tragic seeing how his legacy panned out in the mainstream. Sorry about that dude.
The ending:
"Wordsworth uttered a hymn to everlasting justice on those open sands. He was among the first to get Robespierre completely wrong. How could he call him, of all things, the leader of “the Atheist crew”? How could he not know that the small, ruined, shell-encrusted chapel would have moved the Incorruptible? Robespierre, too, would have liked the procession of simple working or traveling people, their horses, and their motley vehicles. He, like Wordsworth, might have longed to sketch the scene. For he, too, loved nature in all its majesty—even though, so far as we know, he never once saw the splendor of the sea."
Interesting to end a biography of someone by mentioning someone completely different, but I do really like it— it gives a 'zoom out' sort of effect (?) and leads into the rest of history with him being villainized by so many people after he died. Very poetic.
(I tried to chase up the Wordsworth poem mentioned but I'm very inefficient with comprehending poetry and wow the guy really did love his words! Maybe another time.)
