How does the handheld polarimeter PSV-202-D work?

The internal stress of glass and plastic products has a birefringent characteristic. In other words, if there is stress inside of these types of products, light from he polarized lamp will be divided into different units, which produce optical interference phenomenon(ripple patterns) in turn.

Under white-light lamp, you can see aubergine ripples, which is caused by the presence of stress. From the observation of colored patterns, you can see stress distribution directly, then evaluate and improve the annealing process. The inspection of plastic molds is more complex as the colored patterns cased by stress is irregular. A similar situation may occur with glass products, which is called stress stretching. For example, a qualified mold will have a large amount of stress released by tension.

How does a surface stress meter work?

It adopts optical waveguide effect of the ion exchange layer on the glass surface to measure. The divergent light emitted from the light source passes through the slit and is converged by the high refractive index cylindrical prism and becomes parallel light. By adjusting the position of the light source, a beam of parallel light is incident on the interface between the glass and the prism at a critical angle. Due to the stress existing on the glass surface, the light is decomposed into two vector lights whose vibration planes are perpendicular to each other. The two beams of light propagate at different speeds in the ion exchange layer of the glass, so they are refracted to the prism at different total reflection angles. The light emitted from the prism is reflected by the mirror, enters the interference filter, is focused by the telescope system, and then passes through the analysis mirror and is imaged on the reticle to form a light and dark step image. The height of the steps and the number of step lines can be accurately measured through analysis software to calculate the surface stress intensity and the depth of the stress layer.

Laser power continues to increase, high-power lasers are gradually popularized, and the ultrafast laser market is expanding rapidly. As the core of solid lasers, laser crystals have important and extensive applications in military and civilian fields such as laser precision processing, laser weapons, photoelectric countermeasures, laser medical treatment and many others.

Laser crystals have the characteristics of high thermal conductivity and optical anisotropy. Cd:YAG is a new substrate and window material for ultraviolet and infrared optical devices. During the growth process of YAG single crystal, due to the temperature gradient between the crystal and the melt, a certain amount of residual stress will still remain inside the crystal even after a certain annealing process.
