Appointment Applications are now open

The window for submitting your Good Faith Appointment (GFA) request for the 2017-2018 Academic Year (Fall 2017and Spring 2018) is now open and will remain open through February 15th.

Please follow the link below in order to complete your application. Also, be sure to fill out well before the deadline on the 15th just in case you run into some issues. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or run into any issues.

Eligibility:

Part-time faculty members are those who have been assigned courses as a part-time faculty member for at least seven (7) semesters in the immediately preceding ten (10) semesters and who are in good standing (have not received an unsatisfactory evaluation, a written reprimand or more severe discipline).

Welcome back to school!

Please join us at the PTF Union meeting on Monday afternoon (12:00 noon to 1:30 pm - North Bethesda Marriott Hotel and Convention Center) on Marinelli Road on the West side of Rockville Pike across from the White Flint Metro Station. The room will be posted in the Hotel.

The union will also be hosting welcoming meetings on each of the campuses during orientation. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Our last social in mid-February, also sponsored by our parent union SEIU Local 500, was a well-attended success. These get-togethers provide an opportunity for all Part-Time Faculty (union members and non-members) on all three campuses and various departments to get to know one another and exchange observations, experiences, and ideas.

We will be negotiating a new contract with the College in the coming year in a difficult situation, namely that the Montgomery County Council has voted to severely limit any increase in the College budget. Therefore, it is important to communicate your views and ideas, and especially your priorities, to your union leaders. The social will be an opportunity to discuss our goals and what we can do collectively to continue to make our voices heard.

Celebrating our accomplishments over the last year is also in order. Come, join Bill Primosch, the current President of the MC PTF Union, and your union leadership team at LaTasca, Thursday of finals week. Let’s talk about where we go from here.

Let's get geared up for Equity week starting October 26th

This site is meant to be a virtual headquarters where people can find information, resources, colleagues and communities committed to campaigning for quality through equality in higher education. It was the headquarters for Campus Equity Week 2013, and is now being updated for 2015.

In February 2015, many contingent faculty and allies participated in “National Adjunct Walkout Day.” We applaud the activism that drove that effort and invite participants to keep the momentum going by helping us build Campus Equity actions going forward.

This site is sponsored by New Faculty Majority and the NFM Foundation, affiliated national nonprofits dedicated to improving the quality of higher education by improving the working conditions of the majority of its faculty.

Campus Equity Week was started by the Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor, a grassroots coalition of activists in North America working for contingent faculty: adjunct, part-time, non-tenured, and graduate teaching faculty working to bring greater awareness to the precarious situation for contingent faculty in higher education, organize for action, and build solidarity among our colleagues.

Reminder of College Substitution Policy

Substitution Policy

The last thing we do is cancel a class. Faculty members should make arrangements in advance for class coverage when they plan to be absent from their classes. Department Chairpersons and Coordinators (or their representatives) should help find substitutes for faculty members who must take unexpected leave. Under no circumstances may a faculty member arrange to pay a substitute directly. This applies to both classroom and tutoring assignments.

Given the limited substitute budgets and the fact that substitute pay counts towards a part-time faculty’s ESH load, the first choice for a substitute should be a full-time faculty member.

Faculty who must take emergency leave must notify the Department Chairperson (or their representative) and the Administrative Aide directly (not through an intermediary College employee, or answering machine) that the faculty member will be absent; when the faculty member expects to return; and what the faculty member would like to happen for his or her classes.

Discover, Connect, Progress: General Education at Montgomery College

The nature of General Education is changing – everywhere. In today’s environment, the focus is no longer solely on acquiring knowledge but on how students make connections and use what they know in an ongoing learning process. In this information session we will examine our distribution model of General Education and consider the external forces driving the need for change. In addition, we will explore how a more integrative model could have a profound impact on our students’ success. We will also discuss how incorporating co-curricular activities and high impact practices, such as e-portfolios, learning communities, service learning, capstones, signature assignments, inquiry based learning, and undergraduate research, can enrich the student learning experience.

1. Log in to MyMC and select the “Training & Development” tab.

3. In the “Pedagogy/Instruction” column, select “Teaching and Learning.”

4. Select the “Discover- Connect- Progress” session that works for your schedule.
