Evaluative Report

This project was very different from what I have done before. From the concept to the way I developed my idea and the outcome. Normally in my projects I try to add challenge to the concept on the way I develop my idea and keep changing it and developing it with the material or the technique that I use. Although in this project I felt that I’m not changing the concept, the concept was changing me. It was all about one specific concept and the concept was very clear and I had to use all I had in my hand to make that happens. At the beginning it was hard for me to find the concept, which is answering the brief but after I saw the video of Ann Hamilton installation it made me think about my childhood nostalgic and what I wanted to do and play with as a child. Flying with helium gas balloon is definitely one of my favorite thing to do and I’m pretty sure that there are a lot of people out there who are enjoying and wanting to fly with balloons because It’s a fusion of dream and reality. Unfortunately because the lake of time and equipment, I couldn’t make my installation in the way that I wanted to be but I think I do have enough information about it to make it work in the future. My problem in this project was not having enough space for big balloons and I couldn’t get enough helium gas for big balloons as well because of health and safety issues. In this unit I got a chance to know and learn about other artists and designers and the way they work. Another thing, which I found really useful, was the way the design has being used for commercial propose. I also had a chance to visit Alexander Calder exhibition in Tate Modern. I love drawing and I really enjoyed his work. I love the way he translated the drawings in to 3D and 4D installation. All of his work was very beautiful and delicately balanced and I just couldn’t stop staring at his works. He is definitely one of my favorite artists now to look at not only for inspiration for my 3D installations but also for fashion and textile design.  I think it was helpful to learn how to do 3D installation design. This information can help me for window display designs and also designing the venue for fashion shows. I wish I could work in the groups for this project to develop my group work skills but because I didn’t know anyone in the class and they are all doing deferent specialist and I only saw them 2hours in a week it was really hard to do the project together and I had to do it myself.

Flying Like Dreams

Another thing, Which I chose to show my idea was to hang a light toy from the balloons and take a picture from it to show the lifting and flying with the balloons in indoor space.

Because it was really hard for me to make my idea work for this project. In a really short time, I tried to find different ways to show engaging with the piece and play. I’ve got 40 helium gas balloons and I gave it to the child to play with it and I took a photograph from her. I used Photoshop to move her higher from the ground to create flying mood.

How Hard Can it Be

Although I was thinking that it is impossible to make this installation, after watching this video I think it is possible to use big balloons in big museum spaces like Tate Modern. Because the space is close it is possible for people to engage with the piece and fly with balloons.

Flying like dreams

To make this installation I had to experiment with helium gas balloons and find out how many balloons do I need to lift the person form the ground. I chose chocolate bar to lift with balloons because it’s so light and I knew how much it weight. I needed 4 balloons to lift the 30g chocolate bar. When I calculated the amount of balloons which I need to lift a person with 50 kg, the number of the balloons was just so crazy to make it happened. I need about 6,666,666 balloons for up to 50kg person.

 After thinking about my pervious idea and making the balloon sculptures. It appears so fake to use sculpture balloons. It didn’t give me the joy of flying, flying with real balloon and I also think it is not that interesting for other people to engage with it either. My idea is to use helium gas balloons to experiment with and make this idea works.

The joy of celebrating

After looking at different artists and designers who had an interactive 3D installation I’ve got my brief, which is about Re-inventing play. Ann Hamilton was the first artist that came to my mind for the design inspiration. I really like the size of the installation and how breathtaking it looks in space. The other thing, which I loved about her work was that anyone could engage with the work no matter how old they are.  As a child I always wanted to fly with my helium gas balloons. I still have the same feeling each time I see balloons. My idea is to create something with balloons that people with in any age can engage with and fly like a dream!

First thing in my mind for my research development was to look at Jeff Koons balloon sculpture to find out why he designed balloon dogs. 

‘Inflatables are a symbol of optimism,’ he explains. ‘We are ourselves inflatables full of air. Every time we take a breath we show we are alive and when we exhale it is a symbol of death. Inflatables therefore are in a permanent state of optimism.’

To make this idea work as 3D installation I thought that I could make a sculpture balloons and hang it from the ceiling and control it from the machine. Bring it down to hand the person from it and raising it to lift the person from the ground to get the feeling of flying. This can be make from several balloon sculpture which they are connected to each other as one person going down another one will rise up.

Fake Swimming Pool – Leandro Erlich

Fake swimming pools were installed at the PS1 Art Center in New York and the 21st Century Art Museum in Kanazawa, Japan.

The top surface is two layers of clear acrylics which filled with 4 to 5 inches of water that looks like a realistic pool. Below the glass is an empty space with aquamarine walls that viewers can enter and look above with realistic water effect on top of it.

Ann Hamilton: the event of a thread

This large scale, multi media installation really encourages the visitors to get involve with the piece and swing like a child.                                                    The swings are there for us, to swing on. The swings are not build just for small children, they are wide enough for two even three adults to swing. The outcome movement brought on by one swing is increase when another visitor engages the corresponding swing on the opposite side. The movement of the curtain alone is fascinating and the beauty is that the curtain remains in a continual state of flux set in motion by the interaction of visitors.

Interactive 3D design for performance

The Rain Room

Isn’t it surreal to walk under the rain and not get wet?

In this installation you can definitely feel the magic by insane use of technology.

This interactive installation really encourages people to interact with the piece and have a theatrical experience. Interesting aspect of this installation definitely is the reaction of the people, when they experience this unpredictable situation. Because everyone is going to react differently and it is really exciting to see people reaction coming out of their comfort zone and how the reactions are so different and unexpected.

Thread Installation - Gabriel Dawe

These stunning thread installation are definitely one of my favourite installations. His work made the location so magical. Great use of the space, structure and the color palette of the work made it look like frozen light in space. Another thing which has fascinated me about his work is the idea to show the connection between fashion and architecture, and how they relate to the human need for shelter in all its shapes and forms.

Out of Ice - Elizabeth Ogilvie

In January 2014 I had a chance to visit Out of Ice exhibition under the University of Westminster. The choice of the location for the exhibition was great. It was so different from other exhibitions that I’ve ever been. I couldn’t even believe that I’m actually going to see the exhibition. It was more like an abandoned warehouse rather than an exhibition and the gloomy, rainy weather made the location even more interesting and relevant. when I entered into the building, I could barely see anything because it was so dark. There was big screens, showing different  documentary films about importance of ice and the narrative about life of the ice but this wasn’t the interesting part of this exhibition for me. The best part was on downstairs. I could feel the strange mystery floating around the dark, cold room with the two large pool. Reflection of the projection of ice wall into the pool was fascinating. the second pool had two sculptural ice form slowly dripping and breaking the still surface, made me stay there for long time and just staring at the drops. what I really liked about this installation was the good use of different medias, the ambitious in the scale of the work and very interesting choice of location.
