MKII deliberately levels up its ultraviolent 1-on-1 battle action as essentially an extended, non-stop series of tournament fights with a limited amount of outside storylines. We primarily follow the redemption arcs of Hollywood hazbin Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) and Princess Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) of the Edenia realm as the two central chosen combatants in the evil Outworld emperor Shao Kahn's quest for power. It's a fairly mindless but relentlessly grotesque actioner that more readily embraces the franchise's inherent cheesiness. While a clear improvement and extra faithful adaptation compared to the 2021 reboot, the sequel is a messy jumble of chaos, jarring tonal shifts, and suffers from pacing issues in between the many fight sequences.
