Brass knuckles induce a little nostalgia in me.  In high school I never went anywhere without knuckledusters in my pocket.  They got me out of a few tricky situations.

Knuckledusters have an unfairly thuggish reputation.  Nobody is going to rob a bank with brass knuckles.  Nonetheless, in a pinch it is a brutally effective weapon.

It is actually necessary to practice with the knuckles to be able to use them properly.  If you hit a hard object at the wrong angle you could hurt your hand.  You have to hold them such that the bottom ridge is seated firmly in the heel of your palm, so that it can absorb the force of the blow.  Also, many people have knuckles that are too big for their hands.  Your fingers should fit snugly in the holes, or the knuckles could twist on impact and sprain or break your fingers. With a good pair of properly fitting knuckles, you could easily bash through a wooden door or batter a concrete wall.
