Kray Twins Project Performance Rehearsal
rehearsal from earlier today! I think it went well!
more details, again because I'm well chuffed.
Oh Fudge!
Collectively this is probably the building we've spent the most time on, I'm very attached to her. its hilarious that its the only building without any benefit to the plot or relevance to the Krays, Samara and I just thought it would be fun to lighten the tone a little.
we went through SO MANY stages with the paint job, first it was blue all over then green, then pink, then a combination of the three. then we toned it down because the almost neon colours we making people confused.
I NEED to talk about the interiors!!! I DID THIS!!! SO MUCH DETAIL! I'm very proud actually, please acknowledge me.Â
have you noticed that one of the pins is missing and I poked a hole in the paper??? yea. it got to a point where I was procrastinating the real work, and this was important to me for some reason?
Also, the Krays were arrested on May 8th. fun right? and no-one can see it because a) the words are too small and b) the fuckin windows are translucent but not transparent
here she is! the one I had most emotional attachment to!! Esmerelda's barn in all her cardboard acrylic glory. I wish I'd had the time and technology to put a light in the ceiling on the doorway, its the only interior thats open like this and some lighting would've made it feel so much more real and immersive. oh well, on another project maybe I can go that far. the side of the building probably won't be seen by the majority of the audience, but on the off chance it was we gave it a little bit of detailing anyway!Â
in my opinion it helps solidify the objects, an exposed cardboard join takes you out of the scene and thats not what we want
Esmereldas barn Progress. I’m unbelievably pleased with the way it’s coming along - just wish I could go faster! Whatever, beauty is time or pain or whatever
Set Design
is hard..... I think that we are being very ambitious with our idea, but the result is going to be amazing. because we are splitting the work load up (with little crossover except in emergency) I want to do the Best job possible on our part of the set. I’m trying to figure out where DiemantÄ— can fit her shadow puppets in. I think I might have too many ideas? whats new eÂ
The OUTSTANDING work of Edwina Bridgeman. Her characters are so beautiful and dainty - my mum would say they’re sweetly pretty - I can’t get over them. I went to a workshop she ran years ago, it was for adults and I was about 13, but she was very kind and helpful. Id really love to do something with this kinda found materials. I’ve been collecting driftwood from family holidays since I can remember, so maybe I can incorporate that the same way she does? not sure which narrative this would work for though

Final Script
this is the final script, its pretty darn incredible. the amazing  @puppetsandgluetrauma got some equally amazing voice actors to record it, the final thing blew my mind. I was panicking because the idea of having to do a east end accent infant of my peers was BAd
Shadow Puppet Projections
How will you light it?
When testing out the lighting for the three-dimentional part of the set, we became aware that having the shadow puppets playing behind would change the lighting atmosphere. The puppeteers would also block part of the projection, as it falls behind the set when people are sitting on the floor.Â
To combat this we have decided to add a border at the bottom of the video, so the shadows will appear just above the 3D performance and not be blocked by anything. This would also minimalise any light changing the atmosphere of the performance, if the border was kept dark instead of the bright white background of shadow puppets. We could even make this border some kind of fun texture that mixes with the setting of the 3D set, such as brick or house rooftops.Â
Each section of the set would be lit up separately as the focus is on that section of the set, in order for people’s eyes to be drawn there. The end of act 3 when the police run across to the other side of the set will be more atmospheric lighting, with flashes of blue to give the sensation of police cars surrounding the set.
I was putting together a post but Emily has done it better than I was able to articulate! she's an iconÂ
Final set choice. the audience is going to sit on the floor, the stage is quite low down (70cm high). ideally there would be an audience of about ten, who would get the best view, then others can stand but the perspective is lost. behind, will be the shadow puppets crafted by DiemantÄ—Â
an expert from Street of Crocodiles, by the Brothers Quay. I know it sounds fake, Kray brothers project, Brothers Quay animators, but they're real people. when my friend Emily told me about them I thought she was pulling my leg... we aren't using too gritty an aesthetic any more, but I still love it. maybe this can come in handy in later work?

Set Change
its changed now. It would've been A Lot of work and we decided that my time would be better spent making the set I make really Good and Detailed rather than huge!
Current idea I’m thinking about for the set, to make it really immersive? If we had more time, I think I’d like to make something that was a Real Experience like a haunted house but people operating puppets.Â
I am really hyped about this concept because its an exiting idea to change the way a story is told, with small units/scenes that loop and you move on. You wouldn't necessarily have to look at every scene either, its like pick n choose except for the end of the story where u see their arrest.
workshop at the Impact hub this evening, brill night (not just because of the free cake I swear). Its given me some interesting ideas about creating narratives. I've been told I need to be more loose in my approach to things, maybe this is the beginning of a new me? Terry Pratchett who?
also: Ive been told Bowie used the cutting up lyrics technique to create some of his songs, and anything that makes me feel closer to that man/alien/god can only be a good thing
okay so this was a very controversial idea and it was shut down. I was really excited about it! but we think we’re going to figure something out that can involve more people. I wanted to do a thing where the audience - a small audience - would move around with the story. it would mean we could light the whole stage at once without it being distracting
Dramatic? Us? never...
figuring out building heights... none of the puppets were available (getting mani-pedis I think, you know what stars are like) so I had to use some stand ins. the bottle and paint tube did a stellar job, the industry could use more professionals like them.Â
we've decided to use the taller buildings, its still totally possible to manoeuvre puppets, just need longer string.Â
