disclaimer one! you are allowed to dislike kaeya! i am not saying you need to like him or his character, you’re entitled to your opinion and i’m not here to change your mind.
disclaimer two! i am in no way an expert and this is all for fun! this is just my silly little analysis of one of my favorite characters as someone who’s studied literary theory and rhetoric and can also apply personal experience. seriously analysis is like a hobby to me and this is just an excuse for me to ramble about kaeya.

let’s start by getting a quick rundown of trauma theory out of the way. to begin, what is “trauma?” in this case, trauma is going to refer to an experience that greatly affects and changes one’s life; attitudes, memories, behaviors, mental state, etc. while not all changes may be bad, per se, the overall effect of trauma is generally a negative one, which is why it’s so significant. literary trauma theory, then, explores these changes and the impact of trauma in literature. it analyzes the psychological and social effects of trauma, explaining what those effects are and why they happen. in the context of a specific character, trauma theory breaks down said character’s behaviors, feelings, and general mentality in relation to their past experiences; trauma theory hopes to explain to others the reasons for why a character may act or feel the way they do, all based upon the character’s experiences, particularly traumatic ones. our character today is the lovely kaeya alberich, with the “literature” being genshin impact. i’ll be referencing kaeya’s wiki page to ensure i get all details correct for his character story and voicelines.
it would be good to review kaeya’s backstory before delving into the actual analysis. though we don’t know much about his life before living in mondstadt, we’re told he was sent as an agent of khaenri’ah. and by “sent,” i mean his biological father abandoned him in a completely unfamiliar land to serve khaenri’ah’s interests and fullfil his mission—what this entirely entails hasn’t been revealed. mondstadt, however, welcomed kaeya “with open arms when they found him.” crepus ragnvindr took him in as his adopted son, with diluc as his adopted brother. kaeya and diluc were “almost like twins,” so close they “[knew] each other’s thoughts and intentions without a word.” he’d began a new life in mondstadt, one surrounded by friends and family that loved him; one that was completely shattered by crepus’s death. kaeya arrived at the scene of the disaster, and was led to believe diluc was the one who killed their father to “set his father free” from the effects of his delusion. there’d always been one big question in kaeya’s life: if it came down to it, who would he support? the nation that abandoned him, but he still felt loyal to, or the nation and family that took him in and really loved him? overrun with guilt, kaeya confessed his purpose to diluc, sparking a fight between the two brothers. in this fight, kaeya receives his cryo vision. though both brothers stepped away alive, they’ve never been able to make peace with one another. now, kaeya is the eccentric and charming cavalry captain of the knights of favonius; a man who gets his way by using any means necessary, regardless of whether or not it seems right.
kaeya’s not evil; he’s morally ambiguous, and that stems from what appears to be a general distrust of others. his life is one shrouded in secrecy. from the moment he stepped foot into mondstadt, he was surrounded by secrets. even now, he doesn’t talk about a lot of things, namely his past, vision, and feelings. though he’s always willing to get information out of others, kaeya never reveals anything about himself. he repeatedly tells the player they can confide in him, but whenever you try and pry into his life, he deflects your questions with some sort of witty comment or flirty remark. anything he does reveal is vague, or spoken in some sort of “code.” for example, his “interesting things” voiceline. he tells us about the owl of dragonspine, how it “seems to look right through you, while letting go of none of its own secrets,” and then tacks on a “quite fascinating, don’t you think?” it seems like an awfully accurate parallel to himself; kaeya does all he can to get information from others, but never gives anything about himself. now, this whole thing—his relationship with diluc falling apart and his need for secrecy—could have probably been avoided if he had just come clean about his mission years ago. so why didn’t he? to start, kaeya was a literal child. not only are children unable to properly tell the difference between right and wrong, but they’ll also typically follow their parents’ orders blindly. kaeya had just been abandoned, and he wouldn’t want to risk being cast out by mondstadt as well if he came clean right away. you see, there’s this thing about trauma, something that trauma theory states. traumatized people feel a sort of shame or guilt regarding their traumatic experience; they’ll keep quiet because they don’t want to cause problems or bother others with their issues. of course kaeya wouldn’t tell the truth about his past, he doesn’t want to destroy the genuinely loving relationships he’d built in mondstadt. his fight with diluc only proves what he was afraid of: if he’s honest, he’ll be abandoned again. and if kaeya’s used to all the lies, why should he bother changing?
another thing, if he’s not going to tell the truth, then why would he have initially gone along with his father’s plans? again, he was a child. he really had no choice, and was forced into a very wrong and cruel situation. there’s a good explanation for this, too, which is also stated in trauma theory; traumatized people will still do their best to please their abusers. especially if said abuser is a parent, that will drive traumatized people to work even harder to please them. although his father hurt him by ruthlessly abandoning him, kaeya still sought to make him and his homeland proud. he was willing to be used as a tool for their gain; that is, until he found people who actually cared about him. he was an impressionable child, of course he’s going to obey orders. but as he gets older, he feels torn. does he serve those who abandoned him, or those that took him in? his father—and arguably, khaenri’ah as a whole—hurt him, sure, but he still feels some loyalty and connection to his former home. instead of revealing anything, he lets the situation play out. that way, he can’t be blamed when things fall apart.
the thing about claiming he’s untrustworthy is that hardly anyone in-game believes that. he’s adored by the older folks in mondstadt, and foes and allies alike find him easy to talk to. despite seeming lazy and uninterested in work, kaeya takes his job very seriously. in fact, his story states that crepus’s death was the “first and only time kaeya failed in his duty.” the “only time” is especially important, because it signifies kaeya still fulfills his duties successfully. he’s had a total of one slip-up, and hasn’t failed since. no, kaeya is not untrustworthy. rather, kaeya finds everyone else untrustworthy. it’s not unlikely that this is a direct consequence of being abandoned as a child. although it’s been established that kaeya and diluc were very close as children, when crepus dies, kaeya assumes diluc is the one that killed him. in order to jump to such an extreme conclusion against someone he was so close to, there had to be some underlying sense of distrust. furthermore, kaeya expresses feeling as though he doesn’t belong anywhere. he was abandoned by khaenri’ah, and then worried he wouldn’t be accepted by mondstadt. he is, but there’s still that worry. if you place him in your teapot as a companion, he tells you that your home feels like someplace he belongs, following it up with a “heh, who’d have thought…” kaeya still feels as though he doesn’t belong in mondstadt; despite the fact that he’s a high-ranking knight of favonius and rather popular, he still feels like an outsider. he doesn’t trust that anyone actually wants him around, and he finds joy in testing peoples’ trustworthiness. it’s noted in his story and through his voicelines that the beloved cavalry captain has a rather sadistic nature. he likes putting people into difficult situations, to see what decisions they will make. he does this to both opponents and allies, testing to see who’s going to back out and who’ll keep fighting; in the sake of allies, who can he trust? or who will turn tail and abandon their teammates at the slightest hint of danger? i mentioned it previously, but kaeya doesn’t care what measures he has to take so long as his job gets done and he gets the answers he wants. it’s a sort of self-preserving mindset, putting himself above the safety of others. kaeya’s trying to protect himself, which makes sense with all he’s been through. he doesn’t want to be hurt, and instead finds pleasure in threatening harm upon others. it’s twisted, sure, but it’s because he can only trust himself in a world that he believes is out to get him. he’s got as many enemies—if not more—as he does allies; of course kaeya focuses on protecting himself first, whether physically or through keeping his secrets, well, secret.
his most obvious traumatic effect is definitely his alcoholism. but he uses it as a distraction, not just to wallow in self-pity. this is seen again in his story, particularly in story 3. it’s found that when his favorite drink, death after noon, is out of season, mondstadt’s crime rate is decreased drastically. at face value, this just means kaeya spends more time working when death after noon is low in supply. but kaeya doesn’t skip work to go to taverns; it’s already been established he takes his job very seriously, so this means he actually patrols and tracks down threats while off work when he can’t indulge in his favorite alcoholic drink. he doesn’t get drunk simply because he’s depressed. if he did, there wouldn’t be a drop in incidents when death after noon is out of season. no, kaeya uses both the alcohol and fighting to distract himself. after all, it’s a little hard to think about feeling sad when you’re either drunk out of your mind or fighting for your life.
despite being so secretive, kaeya gives us glimpses of his true emotions from time to time. as previously mentioned, his flirty attitude is nothing more than a mask to hide how he really feels; and kaeya is terribly, terribly lonely. that may be why he seems so extroverted. constantly being around people should, logically, drive away that feeling, but it doesn’t work like that. when he talks with the player, he frequently expresses disappointment when you have to leave. each time, though, he dampens the weight of his words with playful or flirty language. he’s lonely, but doesn’t want you to know that, like he’s afraid of asking you to stay. he takes the seriousness of his feelings, and basically bends it into some sort of lighthearted joke. kaeya hides his true feelings—negative feelings, to be exact—so that he doesn’t bother anyone. which is, again, something that happens with traumatized people. he displays that hesitance to reveal his true feelings, because there’s a shame or guilt that comes with his past. he doesn’t want to bother others or hold them back, so he puts on a smile and amps up the charisma. one other very important thing—but very small detail—i would like to note is his feelings toward family. his fell apart not even once, but twice, and kaeya still holds familial relationships in high regard. we know he doesn’t exactly care how he goes about getting his work done. he doesn’t pay attention to what’s “right” or “wrong,” so long as he gets what he needs. but one of his informants, vile, notes that the cavalry captain has one exception: he won’t work with those who threaten others’ families. in fact, kaeya claims those who do should be hunted down and destroyed. even though his own families have caused him so much pain—and he ended up estranged from both—he still understands the importance of having people who love you in your life. because he didn’t get that.
kaeya’s not evil. ultimately, as a knight of favonius, his goal is to protect others, because no one was there to protect him. and because no one was there to protect him, because he’s been hurt time and time again by people who were supposed to love him, kaeya has taken to protecting himself. he hides any and all negative feelings with a charismatic, friendly façade, because he thinks it’ll drive away his persistent loneliness. any “bad” actions of his were hardly his fault; he was forced into a life of secrecy and lies, and then abandoned by the first people who truly loved him. kaeya’s a multi-faceted, tragic character, one that toes the line between good and evil, and that’s what makes him so interesting.

- The tavern was bustling when you and Kaeya had came for a little bit of drinking. Drunken cheers and hearty laughter filling the place top to bottom. You stood close to Kaeya who easily made his way through.
"It seems all of Mondstadt had the same ideas as us," Kaeya chirps, gently pushing past people who stood around tables.
Kaeya leads you up the stairs. Although it was still a little full, at least the people up here stayed mostly seated, only a few leaning against the railing. Kaeya pulls out a chair of a far end table.
"A perfect spot." Kaeya sighs as he leans back into his chair. "I don't mind a little partying, but not every occasion I spend here consists of the same loudness."
You sat across from Kaeya with your arms crossed on the table. You could see down below of the bar with stools filled with men and women, the surface dirtied with spills and crumbs.
"Well, I'm going down to get our drinks. The usual?" Kaeya asks, already hopping of out his seat.
You nod with a smile, Kaeya flickers his own pearly whites and struts down. Once he's gone, you lean your head on the table, your cheeks burning.
You had hoped the tavern wouldn't be so full. You wanted it to have a nice, slow pace perfect for a romantic setting. It was a beautiful place at night if it has no ruckus, but what could you expect? The people here love their alcohol.
You sigh, leaning your chin on your hand when you look down. You instantly spot Kaeya's rich blue hair amongst the crowd. He's at the bar, and a woman has her hand on his back. Kaeya is smiling at her, chatting away while he seemingly waits for the drinks.
You and Kaeya weren't a thing, not yet at least, but you were trying to make progress. You weren't even completely sure of his type of guy. He never brought it up. You knew he flirted around with all types, but that's mainly for work; when he needed answers. What he does at work doesn't reflect what he likes in his own time, right?
Lost in your own thoughts, a tall mug is suddenly placed down in front of you. You jolt up. Kaeya laughs as he slides back into his chair.
"Did I startle you? My bad." He takes a swig of his drink. "It seems like your head was in the clouds."
You rub the back of your neck sheepishly, apologizing. Kaeya waves his hand.
"It's fine, but since it's just the two of us I'd like it if you paid more attention to me~" Kaeya smirks, a chuckle leaving his lips as he drinks.
Your face heats up. There he goes again, saying things that make your heart race. Did he find it fun to make you embarrassed? Or was there depth to his words? Your mind traces back to the women he chatted with. Your fingers tap your mug.
"Hey, Kaeya..."
Kaeya hums, his eyes never leaving you as your mind stumbles across your thoughts for the right words.
"What kind of women do you like?" You cringe at yourself. It came off too blunt, too nosey. Knowing Kaeya, he could definitely sniff out the intentions of your question.
Kaeya looks up to the ceiling, leaning back and crossing his arms. His eye seems to struggle, but his lips are amused.
"Hard to say. My attraction in the women's department has been quite hard to figure out. I've met some lovely ones though."
"So. Which do you like more?" Your voice came out a little weird, you were obviously suspicious now. Though, at this point, perhaps directness is better.
Kaeya leans in close, his elbows on the table. "Oh my, am I being interrogated?"
You take a long sip of your drink, letting it take over your senses. You release with a sigh.
"No, I just wanna know," you say, hardly even believing yourself. "I wanna get a little closer is all..."
Kaeya's eye shines. "I have some taste for women, but men have always been a little more of my flavour."
Kaeya suddenly reaches out, his hand sliding across the table until his fingers reach yours resting beside your drink. His fingertips kiss yours. His gaze never leaves you.
"Men who make me feel comfortable and free, men who can make me feel like I'm on top of the world again, make me laugh," Kaeya grabs your hand and brings your fingers to his lips. "men who can make me open my heart to them."
His lips kiss your knuckles. Your face was burning to the tips of your ears. Your mouth opens but you close it in case you say something stupid to ruin it. Although you felt embarrassed, your body was relaxed, his tender touch making you feel light.
"So, me?" You mutter, almost drowned out by the clinking of beer mugs.
"I just described my type, didn't I? It seems you match it perfectly." Kaeya purrs then releases your hand. Your fingers felt cold without his.
The table was quiet for a moment. You processed his words and your thoughts. Kaeya chugged down the last of his drink and wiped the side of his mouth.
"I'm going to get a refill." Kaeya stands up, patting the top of your head before leaving. "I'll be waiting for your confession, lover boy~"
Amazing, also consider: he has a moss bed but like in the fanciest jewelry box you have ever seen (that he absolutely didn't purchase himself) and he puts them to sleep every night too :)
His definition of keeping pet rocks might be synonymous with like, collecting gems. So everybody mistakes them for jewelry but you open it up and there lies a pebble tucked gently in its moss bed. Zhongli claims it has magical properties that defines it as living and that's why he keeps it. People thought he was insane but since he is the rock expert or whatever they eventually believed him and some plotted to steal it. Obviously that didn't work out and you know what happens when one crosses the (ex-) Geo Archon.

“promise me.” he said, tossing aside the offending fabric. you didn’t answer, and he put his index under your chin to make you look at him. “promise me, please?”
when you finally looked at him, his eyes were softer than the last time you looked at him. he’d looked so scared before, so worried, so frustrated. you’d assumed it was frustration towards you. in reality he was frustrated with himself for not noticing sooner.
his hands found the bottom of your shirt. “can i?”
you nodded and attempted to fix your posture, letting him dip his hands under your shirt. his fingers lightly ran over your sides. as he did so, he watched your face and stopped whenever he saw you wince.
ok but consider: dog boy polycule with a katzlein s/o. they're so so curious about you bc they're not familiar with feline body language the way they are with canine, and they're constantly discussing amongst themselves what your various tail signals mean. the first time they hear you purr while cuddling they get so thrown off & startled bc they mistake it for a growl, but once you explain it's a happy/comfy response, they make it a competition to see who can make you purr loudest/most often 🥺

Just, the dog boys wanting to understand you more so they go find stray cats to observe. Cyno has to stop them from taking one home tho. Razor and Cyno feel embarrassed asking you certain things, so they like to observe more, but Gorou is tactful with his questions- He maneuvers the conversation to get you to talk about your katzlein heritage and family so he can learn about you.
When you purr, it’s Cyno that’s the only one who recognizes the sound. He and you both have to calm down Gorou and Razor, but especially Razor. Gorou gets defensive, but is easy to reason with. Razor gets sad and scared cause he thinks he didn’t something wrong, and is hard to convince of otherwise. Once they all understand exactly why you purr though, it’s another competition indeed to make you purr the longest/loudest!
And god forbid any one of them catch you grooming yourself…They all find it so adorable when you lick the back of your hand and smooth it over your hair. It makes them wanna just eat you up! It’s up to you to figure out figuratively or literally.
Pairing tail signals with beating up Childe, it gives them another heads up that you are Royally Pissed and they should back off. They’ve lived around you long enough to know tail flicking is a sign of irritation, so they try to cut off the annoyance there to prevent you going into sicko-mode fksbcksbc

The collars,,, THE TAGS,,, Such a delicious idea. Imagine having the collars, tags, leashes and everything custom made from the finest leather in Fontaine, imported just for your sweet boys. When you present the gifts to them, Gorou is all too happy to put it on them and there, though Razor and Cyno need some convincing. But as soon as you make puppy eyes at them and say “Don’t you want to be my good boys, though?”, they’re hooked.
They already had trouble waiting for their turns before, but now, with the addition of jingling tags that stake your claim in them, and the feel of their collars firmly surrounding their necks, being tugged every which way by you willingly? Oh, they’ve never been more impatient and turned on in their lives.
Razor cums so, so early, and nearly cries when he does because he just wanted to be a good boy for you!! It’ll take some comforting to get him back up to speed and ready to go again.
Cyno finds himself oddly turned on by this- He didn’t think he’d be much into it, but as soon as you grab him by the collar and yank him down to your face, fingers idly playing with the tag, he can’t help but think this was such a good idea.
Gorou eagerly plays the part of your doting puppy. He wants to be rewarded, so he’s even more obedient when you ask him if he wants to go for a “walk” around the room. He takes anything you give him- even if that ends up being humping your leg as his only means of cumming that night.
By the end of the night, which really just turns out to be almost dawn, all three are exhausted and satisfied. Razor is subconsciously pawing at his collar as he sleeps, and Gorou is curled up at the foot of the bed with his tail wagging. Cyno has never looked so content, even in his sleep, before.

Diluc
Telling Diluc that you have ADHD is kind of an experience because he has no idea what it is and you’re horrific with explaining things with big words so the both of you end up giving up and seeing how everything goes.
Though after your bad explanation he starts noticing things that you do that you mention are linked with ADHD, the way you keep losing things about the house just for Diluc to find them on top of the kitchen counter not 5 minutes later.
When your brain cannot physically comprehend the block of text in paperwork you were just given to look at you go to Diluc so he can give you a summary about it then go about whatever is needed on the paper. Diluc tries to avoid giving you large chunks of text to read regarding his business, but alas, sometimes it’s completely unavoidable so he’s more than happy to help in situations like that.
Diluc loves it when you talk about your day and you end up on three different tangents which will never bring you back to the original point. He likes hearing you tell stories about your day, a smile never leaves his face when you do.
If you have something that your hyperfixated on Diluc likes asking questions about it just to see your eyes light up and rant about your current favourite thing.
Diluc also likes to pull strings to maybe get an early copy of your favourite book, or get the sword design you’ve been working on get forged just to see how happy you get.
Xiao
You never actually tell Xiao you have ADHD, more he just notices things that mortals don’t really tend to do. Though it does take a while for him to notice these things thanks to his distinct lack of communication to mortals in general.
So to start with Xiao just presumes that all mortals just have a lack of object permeance. He finds it a little amusing to watch you look about his room at Wangshu to look for the one thing that’s most definitely in his line of sight. Though if you’re looking forever Xiao will give you a hand.
Xiao isn’t much of a talker, he prefers it when you talk to him. So if that means asking you about your interests and such just to get you to ramble about your favourite thing, so be it. He’ll even try to remember some of the things he mentioned just to see the way your eyes light up when he mentions it to you and you explain about it more.
Xiao will never admit it but yes, he does actually get very interested in whatever you’re interested about and may even ask to borrow the media that your interest is from to see it himself. The way you get extra exited when he mentions that is just a bonus to him.
If you ask Xiao to read a big block of text for you he’ll question as to why you need him to read such a thing, you’ll just reply with “It’s hard for me to comprehend big walls of text, it all jumbles up and I get lost on the page”. He doesn’t ask after the first few times, mainly because her forgot the first three or so times.
But, in the end Xiao is more than happy to read the walls of text for you, even if he doesn’t understand the context.
If you have a comfort food Xiao more than understands considering he eats a lot of Tofu when his karmic debt is weighing on his shoulder, and he finds comfort in it normally anyways. Xiao will make sure there’s always at least a portion or two of your favourite food in stock at Wangshu Inn because he knows the feeling of not finding the food he wants when he’s feeling down and overstimulated by everything existing around him.
If you’re easy to overstimulate in social environments Xiao can more than sympathise so if you prefer to eat a picnic in the wilds with him he’s ecstatic to comply. The moment you mention needing to go into town for stuff he always has to end the day off alone just for the fresh air.
Zhongli
The first time you mention having ADHD to Zhongli he nods claiming that it makes some of the things you do make sense. So, thankfully you don’t have to expose him to horrifically worded explanations like Diluc had to endure.
Zhongli has much the opposite of you lack of object permanence. And such Zhongli can easily help you find things you’ve misplaced, be it your keys. Or the fact your pouring yourself a second cup of tea because you simply forgot about the other one you just put down on the side.
Having an ongoing interest in history always works out with great conversations with Zhongli. You might mention something that you remember reading about in a history book and Zhongli is right there to expand your knowledge on the subject. You learn some cool new history facts and Zhongli gets to talk about something he’s incredibly well versed in
While Zhongli can’t entirely sympathise with comfort foods and food fixations he can however supply the foods you like so you are more comfortable. Zhongli tends to read your emotions, so when it comes to making dinner he always knows when you want your comfort food. If the day has already made you upset enough you might just cry at the gesture of Zhongli reading your mind.
Seeing as Zhongli enjoys reading pretty much anything, if you’re dumped with paperwork for whatever reason by the Adventurers Guild Zhongli is more than happy to read through them for you and summarise the papers for you before you sign it. What an angel <33

there’s just something about you that makes kaeya lose his cool; his brain seems to stop working, and his typically smooth words become choppy and lose their blandish touch.
talking to you is like talking to another version of himself, yet you always garner a bigger reaction out of him, and seemingly without much effort. his flirtatious words are always deflected by you, and rather than recovering, he finds his mind reeling from shock. (or alternatively, his big admiration and awe for you.)
a struggle, truly.
he’s awfully aware of this now as the two of you walk side-by-side in an unusual silence, his lips pursed shut as he racks his brain of things to talk about— but ultimately falls short in the end. he’d caught you running some errands along his way to the tavern, and decided to join you despite your insistence that whatever you were doing was boring. he simply laughed at that, “you could never be boring, sweetheart,” falling off of his lips. it should’ve done the trick, but much to his dismay, his face was red and yours was not.
“of course i’m not,” you agree with him, a cheeky smile playing across your lips. his eye meets yours for a second, feign innocence swirling behind your irises, and he feels the beat of his heart thudding rapidly against his chest. “i’m sure you know, but it’s one of my many charms,” and with a wink, you stalk off with the bags of groceries placed in your arms.
this— it had affected kaeya more than he would’ve liked to admit. for a good five seconds, he stood there, stunned and staring at your retreating back. it wasn’t until you threw a quick look over your shoulder, raising a curious brow at him, that he snapped out of his small stupor. “i thought you were going to join me today,” you tell him straight, and he finds his feet moving on their own.

now there you two were, shrouded in stillness. you didn’t seem to mind at least, as you were silently humming a familiar tune, with a small smile tugging at the corners of your lips. he was now holding your groceries, snatching them up from your arms as soon as he’d caught up to you, silently gleaming to himself when you mutter a small, thank you. if his words can’t sway you, then surely, the little things he does will.
kaeya glances at you from the side, watching as you stare intently at the small list of to-do’s in your hand, eyes focused as you skim over the neatly written words. “what’s next on the itinerary?” he hums, leaning in close to you, and over your shoulder as he tries to take a glance for himself.
upon turning your head, it only then registers in your minds just how close the two of you were. it’s a little cringey, kaeya thinks to himself, how this moment feels like something straight out of a romance novel he’s read before. he’d always laughed at the over-dramatised words— about how time seemed to stop whenever your eyes would meet with that special someone.
as you two lock eyes in the moment, it truly does feel like time had stopped. the sounds of the bustle of the street is zoned out, the chatter of common folk turning into nothing, and all he could genuinely see was you. there’s an unreadable emotion swirling in your eyes, but he’s sure— absolutely, positively sure— that you can see just how much admiration his eye holds.
“your eyes are pretty,” you both mutter at the same time. there’s a small silence that follows afterwards, but you two burst out in small giggles in no time.
“i think,” kaeya starts, though avoiding your eyes. “that your eyes are prettier than mine. no— your eyes are prettier than mine.”
“at least tell me that when you’re looking at me,” you tell him in fake annoyance, a teasing lilt in the undertone of your voice as you speak. he simply huffs, trying to bite back the small grin that threatens to expose itself. “but please, do elaborate.” despite the embarrassment deep within him, you don’t have to tell him twice.
(second thing; your eyes. he finds himself drowning in them whenever he looks at you, whenever you tell him just how much you appreciate him.)
he’s staring, and he’s cognizant of that. in your hands is a small treat, a cream tart full of fresh berries and fruits, and he watches as you chip away slowly at the food. his eyes draw to the content smile on your lips after every bite, savoring and enjoying the sweet flavor the dessert provided.
you look up at him through your lashes, noticing as he stares intently at the food.
“say ah,” you tell kaeya, bringing a sample of a tart that sarah had given to you. he blinks in surprise, not expecting you to actually offer some of the food to him, let alone feed it to him yourself. you quirk a brow, gently waving the tart in his face, and he opens his mouth. the piece may have been too big, as parts of the cream gathers at the corner of his mouth, unable to fully eat it in one go.
he’s about to wipe at it with his gloves— until you grab his hands and stop him from doing so.
“let me get it for you,” you tell him, quickly rummaging through your bag for some extra tissues. your hands hold his face tenderly, tilting him towards you, before you wipe away at the remnants of the tart.
“thanks,” he says breathlessly, and you grin.

the sun is starting to set, and yet, kaeya feels himself wanting to spend more time with you. the walk to your house is short, as you didn’t live too far from the main shopping district of mondstadt. kaeya has an obvious pout on his face, and it takes all your might not to chuckle at the sight.
“fancy joining me for a real date, next time?” you ask him as you stand at the front of your door, and he could’ve sworn that a flustered blush was present on your face. though, he didn’t have much time to think about that— you turn your back to him just as quick, and he’s busy trying to think of the proper way to respond. “not— not that you have to say yes or anything. but... we have some good chemistry, yeah?”
“oh, yeah,” he answers dumbly, the words falling from his tongue faster than he could process them. so much for looking cool, kaeya thinks.
(he doesn’t need to look cool for you, he realizes quickly, because you seem to like him regardless. and in his book, that’s a total win.)

(im not a writer in the slightest so these are probably ooc but shhhhh. canon is fake)
amber and kaeya are both bi & will occasionally exchange notes on who they think is cute -- like, sitting outside while they're eating at good hunter and people-watching, pointing out the more attractive citizens in the plaza. amber's equally attracted to all genders, but kaeya leans towards men/masc ppl, so they often bond over cute guys (and kaeya occasionally gently/affectionately bullying amber for her taste in men lmao). one time she got stood up on a date and kaeya saw her walking home while he was on patrol & tried to cheer her up. at one point he said something to the effect of "girl you are literally crying over a guy who is cis. pick your head up queen, your bunny ears are falling." (do i think he said those exact words? no. would it be funny if he did? yes) and she snort-laughed through the sniffles. as she should, bad bitches have goofy laughs
on that note i headcanon kaeya as a trans man !! the titty window came about post-top-surgery bc nobody pays that much money just to keep their chest in a shirt lmao (kaeya doesn’t, at least). i think he's one of those people who's known his identity from a young age, like, even before he was adopted. since jean is so busy, i like to imagine he's one of the people who helps organize & pull the strings for mondstadt's yearly pride celebrations - which is quite possibly the most extravagant in teyvat, given it's the city of freedom & the whole community has very accepting/chill energy.
lisa is a trans woman and kaeya is a trans man and if someone ever says something rude or misgenders one of them, the other will be a sneaky little shit and stir up trouble for the offending party. transmasc & transfemme solidarity, we love to see it ! lisa is another person kaeya will chill with outside good hunter, comparing notes on who's attractive as they people watch (i hc lisa as pan with no preference, but she'll joke abt only dating women). they'll also talk about whose genders they want to steal lol. they're the type of friends who flirt with eachother platonically & have probably hooked up too ngl. just besties being besties yknow
i like to think of diluc as a demiboy (he/they), & think he wouldn't really put a label on his sexuality. for the longest time he ignored the part of him questioning those things bc he doesn't have time for that!! he runs the whole wine industry, he's too busy for an identity crisis dammit!! he acknowledged his gay thoughts(tm) at one point, said "that's a problem for another day," and shoved them in a box in the corner & promptly forgot about them for several years. mans literally procrastinated on figuring out his gender & sexuality
also about diluc: since in-game, characters can be damaged by their own fire once it's lit something else (see: me burning to death in the swath of destruction that follows xiangling's ult in open grass), diluc has lots of heavy burn scars on his hands & arms. he'd never judge someone else for their scars, but he's insecure about his, which is why he always wears gloves & long sleeves. speaking of, he's bad at taking his own advice. "what are you doing up so late? it's bad for your health to be awake at this hour; go to bed," he says, forcibly tucking you in, before promptly going back out to attend to his darknight duties for another 2 hours. mr ragnvindr please get some sleep
