The Democratic Party did not remain the party of slavery and white supremacy, however. In 1896, Democrats allied with the Populists, who had experimented with interracial cooperation; in the 1930s, Democratic President Franklin Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor made civil rights advances for black Americans a hallmark of their administration; and in 1948, Democratic President Harry Truman desegregated the federal government and made civil rights legislation a significant part of his “Fair Deal.” White Southerners, who had been the base of the Democracy for over 100 years, bolted the party in 1948, formed their own “Dixiecrats” organization to defend segregation, then made their way into Republican ranks. By the 1960s, Democrats had become the party of civil rights and cultural diversity, a remarkable transformation in a relatively short period of time.

When white people just refuse to understand that race is the most important factor in this scenario.
This would not have happened with a Black cop and a white student because that Black cop knows he would have been fired on the spot and possibly prosecuted.
This would not have happened with a white female because femininity for white women is a given and white girls are allowed to be fragile.
This could absolutely happen with a Black cop and a Black student, but only because law enforcement in this country is meant to uphold the balance of power attributed to whiteness along with the fact that there will always be Black people willing to throw their skinfolk under the bus for a pat on the head from the white establishment.
I wouldn’t be too bothered if the headline left out the race of the cop, but to ignore the race of the victim would be irresponsible journalism. That video only exists because law enforcement exerts its power over Black bodies in a way that white people never have to experience on such scale or regularity. The victim is Black. Another young Black girl was slammed to the floor by a maniac in a badge. Whether in a subdivision, at a pool, or in a classroom, Black children are not safe from bullies in uniform who see their very skin color as a threat and their every action as defiance worthy of brutal punishment.
The victim is Black. The victim is almost always Black. Keep reporting that the victim is Black. If your white feelings are hurt that the headlines say the victim is Black, then you are willfully keeping your head in the sand and I have no time for that kind of ignorance.
Lastly, my favorite comment:
The student never “disrespected” anyone according to the people in class with her – and even if she had, since when is that worthy of a bodyslam by a powerlifter? But NPR is being racist by pointing out race. Pointing out race is racism. That’s the kind of white foolishness that keeps my social circle extremely tight.
The fuckery that “colorblind education” hath wrought.
