In the drowned outback of Alaska, you had the heart of a pirate. The long wavelengths of your ambition on the radio signal. A light bulb gone dark and dead in the wash room. I sent you wishes with my head. Marigold. I was a young donkey-smart for numbers, slush for everything else. A red cartoon heart in my palm. Just for you, graceless. I sat in the cafeteria eating crackers and chuckling at the rim of America. I dreamt of the ocean, the saline calmness of being sucked beneath the brittle waters. Loved your buckle and bronze, the metals you sought. Loved you dunking your head into milky sleep after twenty-seven hours awake, scanning and searching for images where there were no images. The imagination of the brightest star in orbit. I played you forest music. I fed you vegetables. I told you it was alright to be asleep. Just let your brain stretch. Just let go. The disgust at the notion. An arrow through the chest. I thought you thought in arithmetic. How could you dream in black and white? I spent Tuesday drinking wine from the box, walking around the chambers in my pink panties and coat. How’s the news? I sent you colors with my eyes. Roger danced with me.
