“It was simply an offer.” Though he didn’t fight it and instead allowed her to get on with it as he sighed, white brow raising at her motions. “Besides, I guess you wouldn’t want me to get into the nitty-gritty of such.” Frankly, it was gross, and comparing the skin of a fruit to that of a person was an analogy that’d probably slip his mouth if she got him going. No need for that.
“They can be transformed into other things, but they’re still oranges.” It was like her to see things in such a fun light, brightening up every room she was in, touching whoever’s heart she came across. It was a rare trait.
A soft sigh escaped her lips, the smile on her face growing as she was reminded of their youth; moments like these really cemented that fact that not much had changed between them.
“If talking about it makes you happy, I’m all ears.” He never really seemed like the kind for idle chit-chat, so having him speak more than the norm was always a plus.
“-- I suppose, you have a point. But they’re much more than oranges by then.” And as if to prove a point, she presents the plate of oranges, slices all carefully spread out.
“Oranges and art.”

Often he wonders if he really deserved her exuberance. Not of any pre-existing guilt, but rather just because, in some senses, he didn’t quite understand. Unconditional affections were still a fresh concept in his mind, though he doesn’t fight it. Instead, he sighs, putting away whatever he was doing. “Give me that,” he says, hand offered out so that she could pass it on to him so he could do it instead. Let a surgeon fool around with knives.
Eyes rolled, though he cannot help a fond smile that appears with the brief upturn of lips. “Don’t embellish it. An orange is an orange.”
She blinks in surprise to his words, momentarily pausing before returning her attention to her bag.
“I can’t let do all the work. You’re already doing a lot here-- it’s fine. I appreciate it though. I’m sure with how good you are with surgical tools you’d be able to cut it much nicer and faster than I ever could.”
“-- You can’t underestimate a housewife however!” Masaki cheerfully exclaims, knife beginning to carefully peel the fruit’s skin as she does so.
“Be a little more imaginative Ryu. Oranges can be a lot of things y’know.”

“… You don’t have to do that.” She truly did have a heart too big for her own good, even if the recipient was an old friend. However, such a gesture has his look shift from pensive to quizzical. Well, that worked for something. “Just save it or something.”
“I don’t have to-- you’re right about that. But I want to, so no matter what you say you can’t stop me from prepping up some orange slices for the both of us!” Masaki exclaimed with gusto, refusing to back down as she rummaged through the items in her back-- pulling out a small peeling knife and a few plastic plates she brought along just for the occasion.
Truthfully she’d planned this from the get-go.
“They’re not going to be as nice as apple-rabbits but these oranges are definitely high quality-- perfect for a successful man as yourself Mister Ishida.~”
“You’re giving me a look,” he sees her at the corner of his eye, hands shuffling as he shifted through a pocket to retrieve his bad habit. “That look of ‘I’m worried because he looks like he’s pensive about something’.” with a huff he continues sifting, pulling out his lighter. “I’m fine.”
“– I’ll look the other way, if it’s more comfortable for you. That won’t stop my worry though.” A faint smile remains on her face, a soft laugh escaping her lips. She was always worried about Ryuken, even long after they’d no longer lived together.
Masaki hoped however, with enough prodding he’d let her be that shoulder to lean on.
“I bought a few too many fruits so Isshin and I thought it’d be nice to give these away.– Give me a moment and I’ll cut some up for us.”

… Masaki…?
Sorry Ryu.. I just... that came as such a surprise to me!
(She wipes her eyes, immediately forming a smile.)
Ah...-- but.. do you mind coming with me somewhere for a moment?

Ahem.. Kankan...~
Stop trying to talk me into going to the PTA meeting...
– But Ryu, they need all the parents to attend. Who’s going to be there representing your cute son?

… You know I’m not one for “nicknames.”
You say that but you’ve never stopped me from calling you Ryu.
