A Clearer Map For Aging: 'Elderhood' Shows How Geriatricians Help Seniors Thrive
Dr. Louise Aronson says the U.S. doesnāt have nearly enough geriatricians ā physicians devoted to the health and care of older people: āThere may be maybe six or seven thousand geriatricians,ā she says. āCompare that to the membership of the pediatric society, which is about 70,000.ā
Aronson is a geriatrician and a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. She notes that older adults make up a much larger percentage of hospital stays than their pediatric counterparts. The result, she says, is that many geriatricians wind up focusing on āthe oldest and the frailestā ā rather than concentrating on healthy aging.
Aronson sees geriatrics as a specialty that should adapt and change with each patient. āMy youngest patient has been 60 and my oldest 111, so weāre really talking a half-century there,ā she says. āI need to be a different sort of doctor for people at different ages and phases of old age.ā
She writes about changing approaches to elder health care and end-of-life care in her new book, Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, Reimagining Life.

Polaroid Pictures Capture Tiny Desk Artists Offstage, āFlaws, Dust Specks and Allā
Mac Miller, who visited the Tiny Desk just two months before his death on Sept. 7, 2018, had a playfulness to him that spread throughout the audience the minute his set began, and he filled the silence between songs with warm, self-deprecating chatter. He doesnāt engage the camera here: Instead, he looks down with his hands on his head, showing his arms full of dark tattoos and a hat reading āDonāt Trip.ā
Creating a moment of connection is often the most difficult part of making a photograph: It has to happen in the instant the shutter clicks. Photographing performers can be even harder, since they naturally create personas as part of their work. So in photographing some of the musicians who have come to NPR to play Tiny Desk concerts, I wanted to find a way to capture them in a more natural state.

The contestant didnāt speak English as a first language Due to this the judge didnāt judge his dish as biscuits and gravy but as brisket and gravy and the contestant moved onto the next round After this Alton started explaining the dish he was asking them to make more in detail to make sure it didnāt happen again.

On Netflix, Chef Samin Nosrat Goes Global To Demystify āSalt Fat Acid Heatā
In her four-part show, James Beard award-winning food writer and chef Samin Nosrat travels the globe, talking to home chefs to learn more about the four essentials of great food.
On wanting to make her show about home cooks, not famous chefs:Ā
āIn terms of the power of a platform, and the power of media, there are so many other shows where you can see all of these fancy restaurant chefs, most of whom are men, most of whom are white men, and theyāre getting featured. But this show is about home cooking. And often home cooks donāt get credit for their work, donāt get paid for their labor, and more often than not, for the last 10,000 years, theyāve been women.Ā
So 200 years ago about is when restaurants started, and when restaurants started men entered the kitchen, and there was pay involved and glory and awards and titles, and then the professional kitchen became the menās place and thatās been reflected in media. This was an opportunity for me to elevate and honor home cooks, most of whom are women and have been women for the great part of human history, and I donāt think thatās always acknowledged by the media.ā

teaching children that they are allowed to walk away and cool off if they are feeling overwhelmed might literally save their life as teens/adults
I am a preschool teacher.
This is my āalone zone.ā
At any time of the day, if my kids are feeling stressed, they can go here to cool down. Thereās stress toys, silly putty, bubbles, sensory bottlesā¦thereās books and headphones to block out the loud noises.
The only thing they have to do is ācheck inā by putting their picture on which emotion theyāre feeling so I know how I can help them when theyāre ready.
Kids. Need. Space.
Kids. Need. Coping. Mechanisms.
Not. Time-outs.
And the sooner we as adults teach them that, the better off theyāll be as they grow.

Okay, first? Pay off all your debts. Take out a small loan and pay it off right away.
Buy several hundred vacant houses. Schedule repairs for said houses with reputable contractors and make sizable down payments in advance. Get everything in writing and hang onto those deeds.
Buy a large open parcel of land that is being auctioned for development. And when I say large, I mean LARGE.
Sink millions into paying off peopleās Kickstarters / college loans / medical bills / mortgages, and give generously charity organizations. That alone will carry off a lot of money.
Once youāve got things down to a reasonable level, say $1m, buy yourself a house, furnishings, appliances, and a dependable car. Pay everything off so that you own it free and clear. Purchase about $200k worth of something easy to liquidate (i.e. gold, gems, bonds, stocks). Put the rest onto prepaid credit cards and wait for Monday to roll around.
NOW THE FUN BEGINS.
You now have commendable credit and a shining public reputation.
Fix up and flip those houses, sell them for fair market value or below to families who need them, or create non-profit homeless shelters. (After all, itās not like you need to āmakeā money, this is all running on the proceeds from the property sales.)
Sell the parcel of land to developers, or donate it to public works as a park or open space. Have them name it after you.
Retire to your fully furnished home. Liquidate your extra assets, or leave them to appreciate in value for a later date. Make Christmas epic with those gift cards. Keep the extra money in the bank and keep your day job.
And donāt worry about taxes when return time rolls around, because youāll be able to write off several millionsā worth of charitable donations.
Basically this
