Technology is a massive part of youth culture nowadays and it is very prominent in everyday life. When looking at youre phone you are standing somewhere but you are also off in your own world somewhere else. I figured this related so well to the brief title that i had to use it .

So talking to my father about escapism he mentioned his art work helped him escape reality for a while then i starting to think about the younger generation and how we dealt with it this got me thinking about technology

Escapism

“People love escapism and there should be a place for it.” ― Tom Hiddleston 

I agree with this due to the ideology behind escapism. We all need a place to take time out in.

So as i developed my idea more i thought more into whats more relevant in todays society and started asking people what was relevant to them. Then they mentioned escapism to me.

so my next brief was called ‘here is somewhere else’ to start with this I immediately though of anxiety and mental health. Didn’t fully know how to start the project but i knew i wanted to try to use double exposure but i had to learn about it first.

On the 7th of december we went to a gallery exhibit with my university. I wasnt to  enamoured by this work just plainly because the work didn’t appeal to me from a photographic point of view.

The beauty in this photo just isolates the pure-ness of the human body. With my photos i’d rather they be honest (however this photo is touched up)

EMMA SULKOWICZ

Emma Sulkowicz was an artist who focused her work on real things that had happened to her. She was an artist who was raped. 

Her most famous work was named ‘Carry that weight’ a piece of performance art where she carried the mattress that she was raped on around her college campus until the perpetrator had been put to justice.she was an artist who used her work to not only tell the truth but to make a difference with it. 

I came across her work when i chose to do a piece which focused around the abused and how they had no voice, and when they tried to take action it never got anywhere. 

Now as a young female i have known people to experience this and ,to be honest i have done myself, but as a (hopefully) budding photographer, I do want to achieve the level of confidence that she did.

Diane Arbus

Diane Arbus has inspired one of my inspirations , so i suppose it makes sense that her work inspires mine. 

Probably my favourite thing about Arbus’ work has to be the unrealness of her portraits. She always focused on the emotion behind the eyes or , the complete absuredness of the world surrounding her.

Nan Goldin

Nan Goldin is definitely one of my main inspirations due to the fact her work is purely honest. There is no work of hers that doesn't peak my interest as a photographer. 

She tackles things  like fluid sexuality , abuse victims and just things that i personally should be talked about way more in society.

Nola Darling - She’s gotta have it.

One thing that I thought i’d write about what inspires my work. Now to be fair I’m not gonna say that i know what im doing with my photography atall, or even my life for that matter but i do know what kind of person i am at this present moment and what i believe in. 

Now I’ve just posted this picture of an actress playing someone called Nola Darling and haven’t actually given an context to it what so ever so here we go. Basically this woman and this show, i found fascinating, partly because the soundtrack is amazing but mainly because for a long time I’ve hated being a girl. It wasn’t anything to do with the actual gender specifics, mainly just the fact that as a young woman ,growing up in a family where sex wasnt really this massive life changing thing, I was and have continued to be comfortable with my sexuality for a very long time. However girls can’t do that. She’s a slut or a freak if a girl is ok with who they are sexually. 

Now ok i’m pretty sure the message to this show was about being a black woman living on a planet full of , well twats. Now I’m not Black , but i do relate to Nola’s messiness towards emotional situations and commitment and her stubbornness to let go of who she is for a man. 

For people like Nola (and me) its hard to control your life , but she feeds her passion for her individuality into her art work. I’ve been trying to do this for a while via my self portraiture and my studio work in the past. Controlling a setting to express how things play out in my head. Thats what I’m good at and i enjoy it. 

Another thing that inspires me about her is she paints or draws the truth, now in no way shape or form am i saying that most artists don’t because honestly thats just bullshit. Every artist does that in one way or another its just sometimes more of a personal truth , some truths that people don’t clock straight away. 

But anyway focusing on my original point, Nola darling paints the truth and thats something that it’s taken me a while to even try to pull off but I personally think i’m getting there , just need more time.

The Way We Live Now

So my first brief is titled ‘the way we live now’ and after brainstorming loads of ideas and stuff, I came up with several ideas:

technology , Moving away for the first time, whether i should base it around my humour from back home and how it’s different in Wales where i’m currently living and studying ,ect

After this i started to look at myself and how i have changed over time. I thought I’d work from how ive grown as a child to a (kind of) adult but then i got bored with the idea. So i asked other people how they thought they’d changed over time and I realised that actually a lot of people have at some point struggled with some kind of anxiety disorder. See that baffled me because so many people have struggled with it , SO many people. And ok , I have had to deal with it for a long time but personally i wouldn’t actually class it as anxiety, it was just me being scared and i wanted to know why so many people i know feel like they struggle with it. 

So i did have an idea but then after talking to my tutor and other teenagers , i kinda realised that it didn’t actually follow the brief that well , so I thought it’d be better to develop it.. 

So hey , I did. 

I looked into so many different disorders then thought , I’ll just work with what I know. 

So I looked at bpd ( Borderline Personality Disorder) 

So I’m gonna properly do Research into it all and work off of what i know and I’ll keep you guys updated :)

Intro

Hiya guys

So this blog is gonna just be me posting some shit to do with my photography. It’s gonna be some Artists relevant to my research as well and me kinda writing about them from my perspective. I’m gonna be including my work and showing development of it and stuff so I hope you guys enjoy and stuff
