On 16th July, I was at Colombo International Airport, happy to head home after two weeks in Sri Lanka. I walked to Gate 6 with my passport and ticket in hand. Past the security at Gate 6, I was FaceTiming my fiancé in the waiting area. An announcement filled the silence in the waiting area, ‘Now boarding all passengers for flight 6E 1206’. We said ‘au revoir,’ and I boarded the plane. I settled down in my seat and put on my seatbelt.
Looking through the airline’s magazine, I see, ‘17th July: World Emoji Day’. I realize, ‘17th July?’ ‘That’s tomorrow.’ I knew the date only because of my flight. Why is it so hard to keep up with dates! Anyway, as I’m typing this at home in Bangalore, it’s 17th July, and I wish you, ‘HAPPY WORLD EMOJI DAY😎🎉.'

Emojis are part of our daily life. Subtly, they make our lives colorful, cute, and expressive. They are a great way to add more life to a tweet or market a movie to the Millennials in the their language: Emojis.
Homo sapiens have used pictures to communicate way before we languages. Emojis are the new-age pictorial script created by Shigetaka Kurita. Kurita laid down the basic set of 176 emojis (pictured below) for the present day 2,823 emojis.
So, kids, let’s all say, Arigato to Kurita San. Arigato Kurita San! (I don’t mean to be insensitive, I've been watching a lot of anime and I want to be part of the Japanese culture. Arigatōgozaimashita!)
