They are out later than usual, cutting across Gotham's Robinson Park in a slow meander back to their respective boltholes โ the park is empty, only the dew-slick lawns, the glowing lamp bulbs, and the skyscraper lights reflected off the mirror surface of the manmade lake. The fountain in its center rises up noiselessly into the dark.
Mary is just a few paces ahead of Selina, walking with her hands clasped behind her back on the red brick path.
Sometimes she can't contain herself. Sometimes her own anger is enough to swallow her whole. Sometimes it is something that buzzes in the tips of her fingers and the balls of her feet โ scream, rage, hate.
But there are other times โ and this is something Mary Dahl has only learned in adulthood, after years of spitfire fury โ when she knows what her mother knew decades earlier. That sometimes cool disdain is sweeter.
She glances back at Selina for a half-beat, her eyes flicking up and then down as if surveying the other woman. A trace of some mock pity creeps into her features.
