 Being a Kook definitely had its perks, you couldn’t deny it. 

Hell, if you gave JJ an hour to rant about it, he’d give you a million reasons why Kooks had it so much easier, from jobs to money. And while he wasn’t wrong, you could also argue that it left a lot of skills out. Funny how even living beside the ocean, you could feel like such a fish out of water. 

Sure, you knew which special fork was used for which course and how to correctly dance the waltz, all stuff the Pogues loved to give you shit for, but it was hardly meritable to you. You couldn’t even change the tire on your jeep if it went flat. But that was life as a Kook; never needing to know how because you could always pay someone else to do it for you. 

Not that changing a tire was the epitome of fun, but Pogue activities – fishing off the boat in the marsh, sinking beers and joints in one go, surfing – now that seemed worthy of your time.

Despite it being one of the thinnest papers you had ever held in your hands, the property deed felt heavy. The house in front of you loomed over you, the shadow of it was all too similar to the one you felt in your heart.

You let out a shaky sigh before exiting your car. This was your new home as the paper stated and as much as you wanted to sell it, give it to some other pair more deserving of it, you feet felt glued to the ground.

It was a quaint little place, perfect for two. There was a large window in front, a perfect size for letting the sun in on Sunday mornings when all you would want to do it stay in. A small porch longing to be decorated with rocking chairs was another homely addition.

The more you looked at the house, the further you walked in, exploring rooms you had seen once before, the shakier your breathing became, the harder the tears fell.

You were standing in the empty living room now, having fallen to your knees minutes ago. Your sobs echoed around the empty room, the property laid open in front of you from when it slipped from your hands. On it, a simple red heart and messy scrawl stood out.
