Nothing in your life was ever normal when your mother was the Queen of Hearts. 

You had heard her scream, “Off with their heads!” more often than she sang you a lullaby. When you were little, the Cards bent over backwards (quite literally) when you wanted to slide in the garden. Your world merely existed within the four walls of the red and black decorated palace. 

But nothing could’ve possibly prepared you for today. 

“Princess Y/N, are you listening?” You snapped out of your trance when you noticed that Madam McGonagall, the royal tutor, was waving a hand in front of your face. 

You nodded in reply as you turned your attention away from the window, sitting up straighter in your seat, “Yes…” 

She raised a brow at you, “What was the last concept I discussed?” 

In your peripheral vision, you could see Hermione, your lady-in-waiting, stifling a laugh from where she sat in the corner of the room. 

“Uhm.” You stalled, trying to rack your brain for something that it could’ve subconsciously picked up, “Taxation Laws?” 

Madam McGonagall sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose in exasperation, because who would dare to berate the Princess of Heart without having their chopped off by the Queen, “Your Highness, you’re mother insists that you learn about basic physics so I suggest to place your undivided attention on this. Now, as I was saying…”

“Y/N, are you okay? You seem to be distracted.” Hermione voiced her concern once the two of you were left alone in the library.

Out of all the palace staff, Hermione (besides your mother of course) was the only one permitted to address you without any formal titles. Something you insisted on since you first met her back when you were both 11.

A shiver ran down your spine as you recalled the earlier conversation with your mother, “They want me to get married ‘Mione.” 

“I mean eventually, you are expected to-“ Hermione started to say before you interrupted.

“Not eventually, they want me to get married in six months. They’re arranging a ball to find me a husband as we speak.”

This was the first time you had ever seen Hermione Granger at a lost for words.

With a sigh, you turned your attention back to the window which gave you an overlooking view of the garden adorned with thousands of red roses.

“I’m barely 20, how can they expect me to get married?” You said, fiddling with the locket given by your late father, “And to someone I don’t even know nor care about.”

Hermione gave a sad smile, “That’s just the way life is sometimes.” 

Silence fell between the two as Y/N continued to watch the falling leaves dance in the wind.

“You know what ‘Mione?” You suddenly said, turning your attention back to your lady-in-waiting, “That might be how someone else’s life would go, but certainly not mine.” 

She frowned, “What do you mean?” 

Pointing towards the window, you said, “All my life, the farthest I’ve gone out of the palace is up to those gardens.I want to go beyond them. I want to see what Wonderland truly has to offer!”

“But your mother, the Queen wouldn’t approve-“

“And who said anything about asking permission?”

“I still think that this is a really terrible idea.” Hermione chimed in as she helped you with the finishing touches of your disguise.

The two of you figured that best way for you to freely roam the weekend without the Press or your mother getting alerted was to blend in. 

“Relax ‘Mione,” you reassured her as you both made your way to the backdoor that led to the gardens, “We’ve planned this out properly.” 

The Queen of Hearts never really looked for nor required your presence until it was dinner time.

So, you had to be back at the palace by 7 pm. But aside from that? Nothing was standing in your way.

“I never knew everything outside would be so… colorful.” You said in awe after passing by the singing flowers.

Hermione giggled, finishing up the ice cream both of you had bought earlier, “That’s just because you’re used to seeing red and black.” 

You sighed happily, “I can’t believe that my mother never let me go out and see this. It’s all so beautiful.”

Hermione’s reply was cut off when a force suddenly knocked you off your feet. 

You would’ve fallen into the mud if someone hadn’t caught you just in time.

Looking up at your saviour, the first thing that caught your attention was the ginger hair.

Then the top hat with a maroon scarf that went around it and the cheeky smile.

“We’ve just met and you seem to be falling for me already. I’m Fred Weasley.”
