Down the Street - A Lesson in Networking.
"I'm going to pair you up with someone you don't know." my teacher said.
For any student, those words are cataloged as some of the most dreaded - whether you be in high school, college, or otherwise. Just the thought sends shivers down one's spine. Upon hearing this phrase the average person begins to think of all the things that could go wrong from this point on.
What if he/she is rude? Mean? Standoffish? Smelly? Cold-shoulder-y? Shy? Mute? or worse...way smarter than me? But, regardless, fate brings you and your mystery cohort together and life must go on. Oh...but what if they hate me? "After I pair you, please adjust seats accordingly so that you may get to know your partner." Get to know them? Not only do I have to share a nervous proximity with someone I haven't met yet - I have to talk to them? Aye. "Paul...you'll be paired with...Colin." Aw but that guy makes me so nervous! What if he isn't cool with me? What if he gets awkward?? And will he be weird about me being gay????? QUESTIONS.
We sat next to each other and with the first bit of eye contact, our relationship had began. "Hi." I said. "Hey." He said. "Your first assignment will be to go have lunch or dinner with your partner and get to know each other further. Next class, I will let you know what your assignment is. This is a lesson in networking - and I hope you all benefit from it." Rude. I thought it would be difficult to get the conversation going. I really didn't know where to start. Wait, we both got into the design program, okay so there has to be commonality there, what if I... "Do you like Ramen?" Colin asked.
"Uh...I love Ramen. Do you like Shin-Sen-Gumi?" I said. He did. So I guess it was settled. My first assignment in my first class of the BFA Graphic Design program was to go and enjoy Japanese food. I could get used to this. Hopefully our hangout goes well. It did. I still remember that lunch like it was yesterday. He arrived in his charcoal car - I noticed there was no logo on the grille. I remember thinking that he definitely pulls of sunglasses and shorts much better than I do. Scratch that...everything. He pulls of everything better than I do. I remember discovering that he loved fishing and basketball. And I distinctly remember beginning to be excited about our project, but leaving that lunch feeling so ashamed of myself. I had made so many assumptions and been wrong about every single one of them. I write this two years after we became friends, and two hours after we had our first day starting a business together. We sit next to each other all the time now - at our desks, in the car, at restaurants, in living-rooms. So the lesson here is: the next time you're told to sit next to someone - do it. You never know what friends you'll make, the relationships you'll build, the networks you'll begin, or the opportunities you'll create. Sit down, talk, and enjoy it. And hopefully, they'll like Japanese food.
Beginnings.
