wait ok this is actually one that has caused some contention before when I've talked to people about it. reblog and tag whether or not you check the weather prediction every day before going out
someone i follow was talking about chicken feet as a food thing and that makes me really curious about how that food tastes! and its a food i cant have for allergy reasons, so this is now an open poll for people to please tell me their favorite "weird" or "gross" (others descriptors, not mine) foods they grew up with, how they taste, and why you do or do not enjoy them!
I'll go first, i used to hate collards because of the texture + bitterness but now that im older and can voluntarily eat them, i like how "meaty" they taste and enjoy them with black eye peas.
We used to have this thing we called Yellow Fish, which is basically Smoked Haddock and apparantly I loved it as a toddler, then HATED it vehemently as a kid and teenager, and now I'm in my thirties and my fondness for it has returned in force and I do not understand why.
There's a lot of ~ultra-processed American~ foods I had in school or growing up that I've mostly moved on from. Uncrustables (peanut butter and grape jelly in a white bread case) were the Safe Lunch in elementary school that I had most days, but for some reason I have since lost my taste for grape jelly. Maybe it's too close to grape flavoring, which I don't like because that's what medicine's flavored with? I like other jellies and other grape products. \o.o/
American cheese was also very inoffensive to me as a kid, then I started moving to more traditional cheeses with my family and disdained the texture and flavor of American; now that I make mac and cheese, I keep American on hand as an emulsifier, but still don't like it as a flavor/texture by itself. Too rubbery.
On the flip side, I used to make fun of my mom for dipping her french fries in milkshakes, because why would you combine savory and sweet, that's Wrong. I have now come around to the warm/cold salty/sweet contrast. When I got homesick visiting @shardreach I made her take me to an overpriced American-fast-food style place, including dipping my french fries in a shake.
Peanut butter is amazing. It's nutty and filling and sticky in a good way. I am currently out of my typical breakfasts so I have been eating spoonfuls of peanut butter. Don't tell my wife. I will allow that people who didn't grow up with peanut butter can find it offputting (including the best of snacks, ants on a log/peanut butter + celery + raisins), but I will sideeye anyone who writes off peanut butter but likes peanut sauces (and vice versa).
Technically no one has told me this one is gross, but I like a lot of my vegetables very plain. My family's salsa/pico de gallo is just bell pepper, tomato, and hot peppers, no onion/cilantro. My ideal salad is plain lettuce and tomato (though I have been introduced to the strawberry spinach salad which is also good). Vegetables are tasty. Dressings get in the way of the vegetable.
two foods that I refused to touch as a child but have enjoyed in adulthood (oops! they're all fish!):
gefilte fish: it is spongy and damp and sweet and thick. it tastes like fish that is also a cake, or possibly what cake would taste like if cake was made out of fish. in a good way. a slice of sweet gefilte fish is an excellent first course
herring: pickled herring is slimy and tangy and a tiny bit sweet, like if sweet pickles tasted better and were also made out of fish. or like pickled salmon if it weren't salmon and also lived in a jar. very strong so i like it in small, infrequent quantities
