I found this really important tiktok about what to do if a Jehovah's Witness or Morman missionary comes to your door:
I spent some time in a Jehovah's Witness church. They're exceptionally skilled at recruiting people into their church. (And I was an ATHEIST)
I left after a couple months, I stayed just long enough to see that they explicitly believe women are inferior to men, and of course, that homosexuality is a sin on par with murder.
The whole missionary door to door thing is NOT how Jehovah's Witnesses recruit. That is how they convince their members that the world is out to get them. One of the first things they teach is that Jesus requires you to try to convert non Christians to the faith. (They say non Christian but mean non JW.)
Then they say, "look how people treat us, just for the crime of wanting to save their soul"
They have long time church members tutor the incoming members to smooth the process over. They're trained to smooth away any doubts you may have about the church.
It is a textbook cult but because it's a Christian cult, nobody will do anything about it.

Allow people to like you, to enjoy your company, to want to be your friend. Allow them to compliment you, allow others to think you're cool and funny even if you think you're not. It is not up to you to tell others how to feel, and remember that people might see the positive things in you and qualities that you have been failing to see while being too self-critical. Allow yourself to be liked by other people, even when you don't see why they should. Don't self-isolate because you think you are not good enough for other people.
putting your kid on tiktok is child abuse and putting your grandma on tiktok is elder abuse and putting your pets on tiktok is animal abuse. hope this helps

Maybe not the biggest culprit behind the Radioactive Bad Takes on this website, but the one thatâs bugging me the most lately: Please, I am begging you, learn what genre conventions are and read the text accordingly.
Fiction is not reality and pretty much every genre of fiction has certain standard ways in which it deviates from reality. And Iâm not just talking about how we shouldnât nitpick the physics of how Superman is able to fly. There will be ways in which the charactersâ behavior and relationships will be informed by the genre as well and it makes just as little sense to judge them by realistic standards as it does to complain about something in Star Wars being scientifically implausible.
For example, âAdults are Uselessâ is a well-recognized trope in childrenâs literature. But thatâs not because childrenâs authors are all going around writing adult characters who are terrible parents or teachers. Itâs because the protagonist of a story written for children is almost always going to be a child, and the protagonist of the story has to get into trouble and solve problems themselves for the story to be any good. Yes, in real life, teenagers shouldnât be fighting in a war. But if the grown-ups stepped in and stopped the teenage protagonist of your action-adventure series from fighting, there would be no story.
Does that mean the grown-up characters in that series are evil people who use child soldiers? No, because we accept a child being in these kinds of situations as a conceit of the genre of childrenâs fiction, and we interpret the characters and their choices accordingly. We donât apply a realistic standard because the very premise is unrealistic to start with.
Another example: An adult hitting a child in real life is horrible. But if the child is a superhero, and the adult is a super villain, and they are in a cartoon, then we canât read it the same way. All cartoons with any kind of action or fighting in them use violence unrealistically, and if the child and adult characters are presented as equally matched adversaries then thatâs how any violence between them has to be understood. The villain might be a real bad dude, since heâs, you know, a villain, but hitting a child superhero in the context of a super-fight does not make him a child abuser, specifically.
Iâm focusing on childrenâs books and cartoons here because I think thatâs where tumblr fandoms have the biggest trouble with this but it applies to everything. Characters in a romantic comedy wonât behave realistically, characters in fairy tales wonât behave realistically, characters in police procedurals wonât behave realistically, all of them will behave as characters within their specific genre have to in order to make that genre work. The second you start trying to scrutinize every single action a character takes by realistic standards, you miss the point.
Repeat to yourself:Â âItâs just a show, I should really just relax.â
reminds me of how every couple years some dipshit comes along and says, âiâm going to FIX the romance genre! iâm gonna DEFY convention! my characters donât get together and they donât live happily ever after because thatâs how real life is!â and then everyone who bought their book, which was billed as a romance, judges it to be a terrible romance book, because it doesnât do what a romance book is supposed to do. and then the author flips their shit because how dare people judge them for being bad at the thing they failed at on purpose.
Shoutout to the geniuses STILL whining about love at first sight in fairytales and Shakespeare plays. Get the fuck over yourself and learn what suspension of disbelief is.
And this doesnât just apply to complaints, but also praise. Nobody said it better than Ursula K Le. Guin:
In the same way, critics who set out to talk about a fantasy novel without having read any fantasy since they were eight, and in ignorance of the history and extensive theory of fantasy literature, will make fools of themselves because they donât know how to read the book. They have no contextual information to tell them what its tradition is, where itâs coming from, what itâs trying to do, what it does. This was liberally proved when the first Harry Potter book came out and a lot of literary reviewers ran around shrieking about the incredible originality of the book. This originality was an artifact of the reviewersâ blank ignorance of its genres (childrenâs fantasy and the British boarding-school story), plus the fact that they hadnât read a fantasy since they were eight. It was pitiful. It was like watching some TV gourmet chef eat a piece of buttered toast and squeal, âBut this is delicious! Unheard of! Where has it been all my life?ââ
dear trauma survivors,
hereâs a little something my therapist told me that helped me out:
even people with the worst trauma tell themselves âit could have been worseâ
even people with the most unpreventable trauma blame themselves.
every single person who has gone through trauma beats themself up over it.
those thoughts that you shouldve done something different or that you just need to âget over itâ⌠they arenât true. theyâre just symptoms of real, valid trauma. what you went through was hard. no human being deserves to go through that. you are allowed to be upset. you are allowed to feel angry and scared. your feelings are valid, and it was not your fault.
