I think neurotypicals can’t truly get Joker; it takes being mentally ill to truly feel this movie and resonate with Arthur.

It takes being intimate with cruelty and isolation to understand his (re)actions.

It takes knowing there’s freedom in hitting rock bottom.

“It’s such a horrible ending” they say. They don’t get it.

They wouldn’t get it.

I can relate to this movie specifically for this reason and I can honestly say I know exactly how Arthur feels throughout the movie

Arthur isn’t the sort of “crazy” you typically see glamorized in movies; ruthless tyrants, chaotic villains, conniving predators. He’s one of the most vulnerable and convincing depictions of a neurodivergent character that I’ve seen in film. It’s instantly recognizable to those who have suffered similar darkness. You identify with his struggles so viscerally and it’s absolutely heartrending. In addition, I don’t think people who haven’t been poor will understand. Living in poverty while grappling with disability, trauma, and functional impairment. Suffocating under the oppression of wealth inequality in our society. Struggling to obtain resources needed for help. Social isolation, difficulty relating to others. All too many of us have been there, or are here, and it’s all too real.
