The Chapter Test 👀

Authors, be honest.

You know that chapter you’ve read approximately 47 times?

Yeah. That one.

Now imagine someone reading it for the first time.

Do they understand what’s happening?

Do they know why the character is upset?

Do they feel the tension?

Or are they sitting there like this?

“girl… what is going ON?” 😭

This is one of my favorite things about beta reading. You get to see where the author’s intention and the reader’s experience meet.

Authors, Can We Talk About This? 👀

Sometimes a book doesn’t have a bad story.

It just has a chapter that makes you go:

“Wait… what was the point of that?” 😭

And that’s where beta readers can be useful.

Not to tell you how to write your book. Not to rewrite your characters. Not to turn your story into something it was never meant to be.

Just another pair of eyes asking:

“Did this scene make sense to me?”

“Did I care about this character?”

“Did the pacing drag here?”

“Did I notice that plot detail you wanted me to notice?”

“Did the ending hit the way you wanted it to?”

Sometimes you’ve been staring at your own manuscript for so long that you literally can’t see what a fresh reader will see.
