Why do I Dance? I dance because on April 22nd, 2008 my whole life changed.Â
At the time I was 16 and a sophomore in High School. Three months earlier I had undergone surgery called a “Pectus Excavatum.” Literally, this surgery consists of putting a metal bar under the sternum in order to correct a genetic deformity that creates a concave shape in the chest. This deformity, while not very aesthetically pleasing, also functions to shift the heart over into the left lung. I had my surgery on the morning of Monday, December 17th of 2007 at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) and would not leave for 6 very painful, very tiring days. On that 6th day, I swore that if I never saw a hospital again, I would have lived a happy and gratifying life.Â
The doctors ordered that I not take part in any physical activity for 3 months, and I obliged. In gym I had to play “cup-stacking” instead of football, and walking from class to class there was never a lack of volunteers to carry my backpack. At the end of the third month I was still in enough pain that I refrained from physical activity.
On April 20th, over four months after the initial surgery I played golf.
On April 21st I played tennis, football, went to a friend’s party, ate good food and ran around for the first time in what felt like eternity.
Early in the morning on April 22nd, I was admitted to the Emergency Room of CCMC.
I was diagnosed with a pleural effusion, or basically, internal bleeding. I spent three days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, while the doctors waited for either the bleeding to stop or for emergency surgery to have to take place. Thankfully, I never did have to go into surgery, and I was able to leave the hospital just feeling a little weak, and also with a renewed sense of “anybody that works in hospitals must be crazy, those places are terrible!”
A year later, it was time for me to start looking at colleges and figure out what the heck I wanted to do for the rest of my life. That year had also given me a long time to reflect upon my time at CCMC, and in doing so I remembered something other than the pain that I associated with my time. I remembered the nurse who first greeted me when I came for surgery in December, her name was Kerry Hurlbert. I remembered the resident, who early every morning, without fail, would wet a wash cloth and put it over my forehead, because that was the only thing that I wanted to distract me from the pain (he also advised me to read Stephen Hawking’s books, although I’ve yet to get around to that). One day, the UCONN’s women’s basketball team visited me, and another day a clown visited me. A nurse gripped my hand in comfort as a medical student placed a chest tube to remove the accumulated blood, we laughed as we joked about the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry, the student had to ask me to, please, stop moving. A tech reflected on how much we take for granted in life, as I struggled to bend over the sink to wash my hands. My nurse from the Emergency Room visited me in the ICU to check on how I was doing…
The list goes on and on of the little kindnesses that made such a huge difference over those terrible days, and so when it came time for me to decide what I wanted to do with my life, it wasn’t to be a lawyer, a teacher, or an engineer. I decided that I want to be a Physician Assistant, so that I could pass to my patients in the future all the little kindnesses that were given to me.
It’s for those kindnesses that I Dance.
