Credibility
Credibility is probably the most over looked criteria when people are looking into trades to select when undergoing a renovation. To me this is extremely surprising, but most people put money as the number ONE criteria and they allow it to trump all the others. I am sure you've heard the horror stories of a friend, colleague or acquaintance that gave a contractor or a trade a deposit only to never see the person again. This is extremely disheartening, having your hard earned money taken from you with no recourse or no way to reclaim it. Although I have sympathy for the people this happens to, it is their own fault. The worst part is that when people hear of these horrific events it places a negative connotation on all those involved in construction products and services. The good news is that it is COMPLETELY avoidable. Whenever you are looking to do a home renovation or build a home you need to do your homework on ALL the trades and the contractor BEFORE you ever give anyone deposits. There are a few simple tips to help you avoid this horrible situation.
1. A lot of trades and contractors offer FREE in home estimates. This is great for the consumer and offers additional convenience BUT make sure you visit the contractors or trades' office / showroom BEFORE making a decision to go with them. Visiting the contractor's or trades' place of work can tell you a lot about the company. For instance, do they have an office, or do they work out of a van? This is a possible sign that you may never see this person again. I am not saying that ALL contractors / trades that work out of a van are crooks but the likelihood of someone moving their entire office / showroom is a little more difficult and time consuming that moving a van. Secondly it will offer you a chance to see the person's work. If the work in the showroom is sloppy or the office is disorganized you can expect your home to be treated in a similar manner.
2. Consider the integrity of the person/company you are considering doing business with. Do they give you honest straightforward answers or are they constantly changing the subject or giving vague answers. It could be they aren't properly qualified to perform the job if they don't give you specific answers. Ask how long the people have been in the business/how long the company has been around. I am always amazed to see companies splash their home page with '30 Years in the Business' in large text or images and then they make no reference to what year the company was founded anywhere on their website. This I find suspicious because if you had 30+ years in the business, surely you wouldn't hide the year your company was founded, that is unless, the company was NOT founded 30 years ago. It is completely possible in these situations that the same owner has had 5 different companies in the last 30 years and every few years closes and re-opens under a different name. If this happens then you can say goodbye to any warranty that would be associated with the products/services you purchase. Also if this is the case what re-assurance do you have that the trade will finish your project completely without closing down? Now on the other hand it may be a clerical error and they simply omitted the founding year on the website - so how do you know? ASK. It's simple, if you don't ask they won't tell you. Once you ask it's your job to evaluate the answer and make a decision whether or not this person/company is trustworthy to handle your project, and more importantly your money.
3. REFERENCES. It amazes me how few people ask for REFERENCES. The easiest was to learn about the quality of work a contractor/trade does is to ask someone who has RECENTLY used the same trade a few questions about time frame, quality of work, customer service and overall experience. References over 30 months ago are invalid.
With these simple and cheap 3 steps you can be sure that your renovation or new home construction will be successful and stress free.

Integrated Kitchen Lighting
Integrated Kitchen lighting is a big trend in kitchens. Although most of the applications kitchen manufacturers offer are strictly aesthetic (and we think the right kitchen lighting can make a great kitchen look even better), few kitchen manufacturers actually stop and think how they can make cabinets look better while at the same time, make cabinets light up so you can find things easier and quicker. At QTK we still see some competitors putting Xenon and Halogen bulbs in the their kitchens. With the wide availability of LED lights now (both in pucks and in strips) combined with the benefits of LED (better for the environment, never have to change bulbs), we find it surprising that ALL consumers aren't DEMANDING LED lighting. Sure there is an added charge to going LED, but QTK can even calculate how long it will take to pay for the price difference in choosing LED's (in energy savings). In most cases it's between 8-12 months. Considering our kitchens last between 15 - 30 years you stand to save a lot of money in the long run. With that being said some kitchen manufacturers can't be bothered to spend the time adding, changing or customizing lights your kitchen. QTK offers a variety of LED ONLY lighting options including Puck Lights, Strip Lights and a new integrated cabinet lighting system available ONLY at QTK. For almost 2 years QTK has been developing a completely revolutionary LED cabinet lighting system that you won't find at any other kitchen manufacturer in NORTH AMERICA OR EUROPE (we know because no one at KBIS 2012 or Eurocucina 2012 has anything close to this level of lighting sophistication). By listening to customer comments and questions, combined with QTK's in-house design expertise, precision engineering and flexible & custom manufacturing facility we are able to offer a completely unique and revolutionary system to completely light up each and every cabinet - it's far beyond anything a simple puck light or strip light can offer - and it's unlike ANYTHING you've ever seen or heard about until now. I can't display any pictures because we want this to remain a QTK exclusive but if your in the market for a kitchen with integrated lighting come by our showroom and have a look at the FUTURE of integrated kitchen lighting. It's environmental friendly (very low energy consumption), it's looks FANTASTIC and it will last as long as your QTK Kitchen will.
While most kitchen companies offer 1, 2 or 3 interior cabinet colours for your kitchen, QTK doesn't constrict your choices. At the end of the project it's YOUR KITCHEN, why then do so many cabinet manufacturers tell YOU what your CABINETS should be made of. There are people who still enjoy a natural maple wood grain interior for their cabinets- which we can do - but that's not all we offer. When customers are looking for something unique QTK has the answer. Last year (2011) alone QTK used over 90 colours for their cabinets. One customer asked for bright green cabinet interiors, and while other kitchen manufacturers tried to force their one standard option upon the customer, QTK built custom GREEN cabinets just like the customer requested (with Natural Rift Cut White Oak cabinet doors). Since QTK is always using the best & newest products, we're expanding our already outrageous and limitless cabinet interiors and are now offering a CANADIAN PLYWOOD cabinet interior in 40 different colours - gone are the days when you had to have Natural Maple or Natural Birch (both are very yellow in colour) to get plywood interior. Imagine your off-white or deep brown kitchen doors and now when you open the door you can have colour matched interior cabinets. YOUR KITCHEN, YOUR TASTE. Inside & Out.

A customer recently asked us to make a hockey stick - but not just a regular hockey stick - this is a special stick for a team trying to win a hockey championship. The front features the Toronto Junior Canadiens Logo along with the writing '2011-2012 The Road to the Championship'. Also on the front there are cutouts for 12 pucks (the number of wins required to win the championship). The back features the team's slogan 'Forever Strong' and the numbers of each player. The owner picked up the stick on Monday and was amazed at the detail and the final product. QTK completed all aspects of the stick's work in house, from engineering, machining and painting. Let us know what you think.
At QTK we can make your kitchen look like it's from 50 years in the past - or 50 years in the future - it's your kitchen, your taste - your only limited by your imagination - everything is done in house - from high gloss to distressing & antiquing and everything in between
