Finally figured out how to permanently disable google assistant on phone
You can't just post this and not tell us how man
Instead of being in settings its in the google app. Also, google, not chrome. Icon is a G, not the circle thing. Click on your pfp to open a menu
From there, go Settings > Gemini > Digital Assistants > Switch to Google Assistant. This disables Gemini, google's AI assistant, and switches you back to the old one. We aren't done yet.
Go back to Settings. From there, we go Settings > Google Assistant > scroll to find General > Google Assitant on/off > turn it off
They really tried their best to make it a pain, but you can eventually disable it. Holding the power button on your phone still pulls up a menu and asks you to turn it back on, but this is the least intrusive you can make it.
Applies to all non-apple phones afaik. For sure Samsungs and Pixels but idrk about others
Edit: thank you my friend @/teeth-kid for confirming that this also works on Motorola
I thank you, my wife thanks you, and as for the reblog chain, that goes without saying.
Yesterday I wrote about some cut romance lines. Today I broke my game, but triggered them.
Vimes. So, Snuff. Oh god Vimes. My man decided to get training in raising a teenager a few years ahead of having one of his own. Just in case. Vimes sees someone younger than him, asks 'is anyone gonna care for this child' and doesn't wait for an answer.
I love him and Feeney together so much. This kid comes to his house to arrest him and he (sort of) goes along with it, even if he thinks the reason is bullshit. He lets him have some authority, but doesn't hesitate to tell him when he's wrong or do his own thing – but he still gives him the option to choose what he thinks is the right approach, whether he agrees or not. He brings him to the goblin cave, but the second he realises Feeney can't see, he wants to lead him back out and come back inside by himself. He guides him along, but doesn't make decisions for him. He trusts his knowledge on things Vimes doesn't know about (boats. just... boats. what the fuck is up with this man and boats. he is lost). He is so proud this kid respects his mum. When he sees Feeney has things handled, he doesn't jump in to take over. He still helps or takes the lead when needed.
This is not something new, either. Vimes is good at... Well, parenting. He takes Carrot under his wing, screw that Carrot is twice his size and already has parents. He and Angua don't get along at first, but later develop more of a father-daughter relationship. He sees grubby baby Nobby in Night Watch and gives him food and treats him as someone capable of making his own decisions and taking care of himself and as a person, when hardly anyone does. He is protective of Cheery and will fight anyone who insults her with bare hands and teeth.
He doesn't shy away from sharing what he knows. He tells people. He won't hesitate to give a long speech or a short demonstration to teach people better. He'll teach them to walk. He is good at teaching them to walk.
Sammies, too – they are all in contact with him, weeks, months, years after leaving Ankh-Morpork. When he runs into one of his Watchmen abroad, they are happy to see him. He couldn't have that much of a hand in their training, he is a busy man, he hardly recognizes half of his Watchmen these days; but it was still enough for them to like him, even outside of the 'oh my god it's commander vimes he's my hero' thing that starts happening by later books.
All of this, without taking into account Young Sam. Or the dad jokes.
On the note of Sammies, I know Sammies are the Watchmen trained in Ankh-Morpork that go abroad but. Look. Feeney is a Sammy to me.
the relationship between Vetinari and Vimes is sooo funny, because it is extremely aggravating for literally everyone involved. Like at some point they have this kind of companionship, and neither of them are really happy about it ?? they have mutual respect for each other and for both of them it's the most annoying, head-ache inducing thing in the entire world. they are besties and both of them are mad about it. it's " help my weird boss keeps promoting me against my will and teaching me the ways of Evil" and " help my commander that I employed to annoy the rich is making my city better and teaching me the ways of Good". their lives are so entangled with one another they literally couldn't be any closer. their mutual dislike is so important actually because it helps them to hold one another accountable. that little bit of mutual distrust is CRUCIAL. they are actually the epitome of love, and wow do they hate it. they absolutely loathe it. my favourite relationship to be portrayed anywhere ever.
the original series of star trek is absolutely my favorite thing bc every episode is like:
-kirk manhandles a penis shaped rock prop for a very long time
-spock dances flamenco
-sulu fences down the hallway shirtless
-episode plot is kirk v massive sentient lump
-kirk tries to explain spock's ears as a childhood accident where he got his head caught in a mechanical rice picker
-on an unrelated note, spock starts wearing a beanie
-redshirts get turned into like. cubes of salt
-uhura defeats a giant green hand by hotwiring the entire comms console
-spock and kirk hold hands
-scotty stops chekov from starting a bar fight with klingons only to immediately start one himself bc the love of his life (the enterprise) gets insulted
-mccoy's fantasies involve meeting characters from alice in wonderland, including a giant anthropomorphic rabbit
-spock's alien sex drive episode
-kirk gets bodyswapped
-gladiator fight episode (1)
-gladiator fight episode (2)
-gladiator fight episode (3)
AND YET, every episode is ALSO like:
-war cannot be reduced to numbers from an outside perspective, because that makes it easier to stomach without change; the horror that is war must be acknowledged in order to make room for peace
-more types of life can be extant than we can conceive, and just because they are different forms of life doesn't make them incapable of prospering
-love cannot be programmed or controlled, and discriminatory hatred is a tool only for death and pain
-cultures that are different than our own are valuable and can be vibrantly rich with history, and judging them before we try to understand and empathize is not only reductive but contemptible
-happiness is something that we have to allow ourselves, and actively seek out, because it can't come to us without work and acknowledgement of our own state of being
-genocide can never be justified, and certainly not even to supposedly save the people that are more "valuable" by any given metric over those who are not, because all lives have worth
anyway the balance of absurdity and meaningfulness gives me life, and we haven't even gotten started on the whale movie lmao
Hunt: Captain Ahab (Moby Dick) "After losing his leg while hunting the titular whale, Ahab becomes obsessed with pursuit of revenge against Moby Dick. He keeps up with this single-minded pursuit despite the negative effects on his ship's crew and himself, and despite every other whaling crew encountered throughout the story maintaining that Moby Dick is near-impossible to find and too dangerous for anyone to attempt to kill. As well, as a whaler he already has a connection to hunting even prior to his obsession with hunting one specific whale. In addition, at multiple points in the story Moby Dick himself is implied to have supernatural aspects, paralleling the tendency of Hunt avatars to hunt down the creatures and avatars of other Entities."
Slaughter: Gunpowder Tim (The Mechanisms) "Ignoring his present day role as an immortal murderous space pirate, roving through the galaxy having “fun, violence” his origin story ballad, Gunpowder Tim vs the Moon Kaiser is basically world war 1 on the moon, with an Achillean inspiration. Tim is in the place of Achilles in this story, and after his best friend is killed, descends into a violent rage, and to include some convincing lyrics: “We’ll murder all the Lunar Men with fury heaven sent/And we’ll carpet Lenny’s tunnels with the rounds that we have spent/they tried to shake our firm resolve but haven’t made a dent/and their blood will run like wine.” “Take no prisoners give no quarter/show them all the color of their entrails on the floor/the Kaiser’s men are cattle to the slaughter/and their blood will run like wine.” “Their existence is a mad disease there needs to be a cull/upon their rancid soldier flesh out bayonets will dull.” The statements of wine, while a literary reference, show the delight and almost decadence Tim is viewing violence with, wanting it to be as abundant as wine. A later description of him by the First Mate: “So Gunpowder Tim cut a bloody red path/Through cannon and through infantry, dealing out his wrath/Battalions were gathered/and charged with his destruction/but all of them fell to his maddened corruption.” And, as if the battlefield origins and enjoyment of brutality isn’t enough, he is also musically aligned, both in lyric, with “the brutal hymn of gunpowder” as his “favorite song” and the slightly meta piece of info, the pirate crew he’s in is in-universe, a band.

Just finished The Fifth Elephant for the first time in maybe a half decade and I am having Sam Vimes feelings.
Sam Vimes who, Pratchett takes great pains to tell the reader, doesn't kill, at least not in ways that prevent him from sleeping:
Page 173
Page 338
Page 366
Sam Vimes who makes the conscious decision to kill Wolfgang von Uberwald, because nothing else would do.
Sam Vimes who makes a plan, arms himself for it, and walks calmly through the streets to carry it out.
Page 429.
Sam Vimes who didn't want to hurt anyone. Just to kill someone.
Sam Vimes who doesn't give the action hero quip, because that would be psychopathic.
Sam Vimes who has just sacrificed his own view of himself for the safety of those he cares about.
Sam Vimes who will no longer be able to go to bed believing he had never deliberately killed at all.
Page 430.
Just... The reader doesn't know the plan, but Vimes does, before he ever leaves the embassy. The entire time he's following Wolfgang's trail of destruction he knows what he's going to to, coming to terms with what it will cost him, realising that he can learn to live with it. It adds a LOT to the scene in subsequent readings. Even right up to the action hero quip thing. Yes, it's Pratchett pointing out that James Bond is a psychopath, but if you'll indulge me the over-analysis, it's also the random disassociative thoughts of a man thinking of what he just did in a way several times removed.
Ha! Now I only need to meet him

On today’s episode of “I have zero self control when it comes to Pedro’s smiles and also GLASSES”
I, for one, cannot wait to hear Mando say, "I never get any damn help around this ship" as he picks up after the Child.
