As a scholar of a certain person's work, who discovered a love of translation greater than their love of, y'know, publishing articles or books, I have to say this is so relatable. Yes, I have absolutely not done with that major work. I don't care if a version got published and became famous, that's nice for past me, but I'm going to ride that bull again.
Washington Post is paywalling the article but it looks like Taylor Farms — a consumer bagged salad brand that also supplies produce to grocers and fast food chains like Taco Bell, Walmart, McDonald's, Chipotle, Burger King, KFC, and Meijer —may be at least one of the sources of the current cyclosporiasis outbreak.
Taylor makes bagged greens, salad kits, chopped salads, the works. Keep avoiding supermarket greens, but keep an especially close eye out for this brand/supplier. The above list of grocers and fast food chains is NOT exhaustive, so please continue getting lettuce and other raw produce taken off your burgers, sandwiches, etc.

Holy crap, this means they were also responsible, not just for the infectious onions of a few years ago, but also the infectious organic carrots of a few years ago. And I thought at the time, "man, even with organic produce, shit is an ineluctable fact of farming," but it's not about organic, it's about Taylor Farms being the absolute worst.

Gaal was supposed to be on Terminus ... presumably just long enough to get them in an informed way to and through the First Crisis—without actually being told what the hell it was going to be—until Hari stepped out and glad-handed his way to a peace treaty.
But that means that "The Plan Where Gaal Has a Daughter" is in fact the original plan, so Salvor (under a different name) was going to exist, whether or not Hari bothered to know about Gaal and Raych preparing for that in specific. But since he also didn't know about the whole mental powers thing, it was still going to be an unanticipated variable—just one contained to Terminus, maybe juicing the odds.
So yeah, hypothetically all of the original data is in the Radiant, and Gaal would have plenty of time to poke around in it while Mari Hardin and Lewis Pirenne and company did their thing. And it's likely that Gaal would have taught her daughter and the capacity would have carried on in some way, but I doubt that the Invictus being the original predictive test makes itself obvious in the Radiant's dataset. After all, the Foundation isn't supposed to be maneuvering the plan.
So it's not that we're now on "The Plan Where Gaal Has a Daughter," so much as "The Plan Where Gaal and Her Daughter are Alive Centuries Later and There's No Second Foundation."

Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.

I didn't do so right away but jesus wept I PUSHED myself to learn to read SPECIFICALLY so I could read The Hobbit! It is, in fact, a children's story! And children only see page count as 'there is a lot of this fun story to read!'

it really is quite bad for your military to have an image of itself as a warrior class. what you really want is for your soldiers to think of themselves as boring professionals who will fill out a report form if someone gets a little too warrior ethos out there

thing I didn't add to the literary criticism terms list but I also see and think about a lot, I just don't have a great name for yet: the thing when sci-fi archaeologists go to a sci-fi planet and there are the ruins of a civilization where everyone has been dead for 10,000 or 50,000 or 1 million years or whatever. No survivors, no descendant communities, no one else living here anymore, just empty ruins. And because everyone is completely and thoroughly dead and gone, only the (usually human) discoverers are left to put together the pieces of what this once-great civilization was like. It's not really the same thing as Big Dumb Object sci-fi, it's very much framed archaeologically: planetbound ruins, artifacts, remnants, ancient scripts. And it's a clean break from the past to the present, no continuity. The protagonists now know this society better than anyone else, because there's no one from this society left to know it. And due to this, they kind of get the authority to make declarations about it, about how to interpret it or what's worth preserving from it.
On the one hand it makes sense because space is the place where you can get the timescales to meaningfully do this. Species that arose and went extinct long before humanity even existed - yeah you can imagine those in space. The speculative appeal is strong. On the other hand, this is not how archaeology works anywhere on Earth. There are always people there no matter where you're digging, and USUALLY they will have some connection to the stuff being dug up. The actual on-the-ground politics of that relationship are very different where you go in the world, but anywhere there used to be people there still are people. And that is almost never true in sci-fi archaeology. And obviously sci-fi allows us to speculate, but it's the pattern you see again and again. No one's interested in speculating an alien archaeological site where those aliens' descendants or anyone related to them are still around in any meaningful capacity. In sci-fi, descendant communities just do not exist. Everybody Died. This place now belongs to no one anymore, except the archaeologists.
That's why I've been calling this trope Extraterra Nullius but that doesn't quite evoke the idea I'm getting at because I'm specifically interested in how it's being done in relation to archaeology.
