Happy Pi Day! (but this isn’t related to Pi Day) Meet the Lullabyrd. These birds are nocturnal, much like owls, but use sonar like bats instead of sight to maneuver around. Their ultrasonic calls are interspersed with calls that can be heard by the human ear. The calls are soft and melodious, earning them their name, as they sound quite calming to anyone camping out in the rugged wilderness.

Just when you thought that our critters couldn't get weirder...meet the Silkpuff. They're just like silkworms, except that they're about the size of a loaf of bread. Texture-wise however, they're not very breadlike. I guarantee this will make you feel uncomfortable, but at least know that it's one happy little critter. We actually know very little about puff creatures, but the one thing constant is that smile they have on they're face...yeah, you know what we're talking about.

The last elemental specimen we found was perhaps also the strangest, because we never even discerned what it was made of. After our encounter with the airbending terrier, which we never saw again, we met this. It was our last night in the vale, and we stayed near a thicket of trees. She came into view as the fire died down; a little flickering brightness around the size of a papaya. She looked like a fairy from the storybooks, wearing a simple dress, save that where her legs, hands, and head should have been, were wavering, flickering trails of some glowing gaseous something, not liquid, but more coherent than gas, and a shadow of a countenance on her face. We shall probably never know her true nature, but we called her an Ethersprite, and the name stuck. She hovered around silently for quite a while, and as she floated away from us and we tried to follow, she faded and disappeared into the inky darkness. She never came close again, but for the rest of the night, we saw the same glow pulsing here and there among the trees, not ominously, but just observing as we had been, in this mysterious vale...

We thought this was just another stray dog as we explored the windswept moors, but we realized it was far from being normal when we approached it and it began running—though we hesitate to call it running. As soon as we got within perhaps 10 meters of it, it shot off quicker than a greyhound. As it turned perpendicular to us, its feet scarcely seemed to touch the ground at all; it seemed to be running on air. No more than a few seconds later, it was gone, and it left no tracks to follow. Based on its resemblance to one of our team member's pets and, naturally, its seemingly magical abilities, we called it an Air-dale Terrier. We did not spot any more of these terriers during our remaining time exploring in the vale, and it seems unlikely that we shall ever again...

Fire, Air, Earth, Air...

If you thought that we found an earth bending organism following our Water Bear and Fire Ant, I’m afraid you’re going to be sorely disappointed. We found and Earth Worm. Not a worm that can move dirt and stuff around, but a literal Earth worm. In their resting state, as illustrated, they are about the size of a large tossed salad. They are quite harmless creatures, eating mostly plant matter, but they will grimace at you with their very human countenance when frightened. This was perhaps the most photogenic one, we couldn’t find one that didn’t look like it was carrying the whole weight of the world on its back.

Another elemental creature we found was the Fire Ant. Much larger than the average ant, these Fire Ants are about the size of a potato. Aside from their imposing size, they are still quite crushable underneath the foot (as we discovered). However, it's neither their size nor their sting that makes them feared, but the fact that these are literal fire ants. It seems that aided by bacteria in their digestive system, the ants store methane in their outsize heads; we thought their large heads signified greater intelligence, but it seems its just mostly hot air. Anyhow, by striking their pincers together rapidly, they can generate enough heat to produce a significant tongue of fire. Perhaps we may bring back a specimen in the future, but for now the illustration shall have to suffice. Members of our team suggested that we make an ant farm, ("They'll be the hottest new thing"), but no one seemed to be able to come up with a way to capture one, without causing it to self-destruct when it felt threatened.* *Note 1: Methane and air is very explosive

Roaring back from hibearnation...Bear with us though, we may or may not have daily updates; we might have a paws here or there.

We all went exploring the world for a while, and this is what we found. Just like tardigrades, we’re coming back from being dormant,so here we have a Water Bear...

Unlike their microscopic namesakes, they are massive beasts, around one-and-a-half times larger than the average polar bear. Little is known about their anatomy  because of their inhospitable habitat and aggressive nature, but they are well suited for their icy home. Their eight powerful legs are perfectly adapted for the snow and ice of the North, giving them excellent cross-country performance. While the illustration may seem fanciful, legend has it that they have magical ice and water powers in their paws. Whether this is real, or just an embellishment of sightings of water bears sending up huge sprays of ice and snow as they run and when they hunt to  disorient prey, is subject to debate and may be revealed in future research.
