My two lfs have their own way of combating the new dory boom that will most likely happen. One said for that year they flat out won’t sell any hipo tangs or standard looking clownfish. My saltwater store is going to only get a set number of clownfish and raise their minimum care tags to more than people are willing to pay (I’d they did their research they’ll be able to counter it. It’s also not insane at a 30 gallon soft reef tank that includes liverock) . They’re also going to have a display tank with a full grown hipo tang as to show how massive they get (they do this with pleco in that store too.)

I’m an aquatic specialist at my work and here are some things that customers say to me.

This started cause a customer asked me for a “Dory” fish today for her 10 gallon, freshwater, uncycled tank. Sorry nope nope. (And it begins)

Common Plecos in Bad Homes (aka anything less than a 150 gallon tank:

-I appreciate that you care but I’ve had them before, my longest one lived for 5 months. 

-You know what. I’ve heard that from the internet and you guys but I’ve never had one grow that large, so you guys are incorrect.

Gold Fish:

Why can’t you give me 3 (half a gallon tub) and let me go on my way.

Its for the kids to play with

20 gallon is too big for one fish, are you sure I can’t have 10?

Ciclid: 

-I heard if you put them in a small container they’ll stay small anyways 

Tetras:

-But having one kind of fish is boring in my 10, can’t I just get one of each? (Neon/Skirt/Emperor etc.)

-They don’t HAVE to school do they?

Bettas: 

-Well you guys have them in cups, I’m giving them a better home (0.75 gallon tank/nofilter/no heater)

Darnest things customers say: That literally makes my heart ache.

-Fish are disposable pets

They(Tiger Barbs) were so aggressive so I flushed them down the toilet (alive)

I’m so sick of this frog, can I flush it down the toilet? Does that make me a bad person?
