alternative manga: where to buy (that isn't amazon)
i posted this on my anilist so i might as well post it here too. this is an incomplete list of bookstores & publishers specializing in alternative manga (as well as alternative comics of other nationalities) that you can browse and support! many of these are especially great if you want to explore the world of japanese avant-garde comics that pushes beyond the typical western stereotypes of what “manga” is like, although styles vary widely between sites (some publish more gekiga, others more underground comix, and others still defy broad categorization). i included in parentheses what language(s) they sell manga in. these are just off the top of my head, mostly places i’ve bought from myself.
drawn and quarterly (english) breakdown press (english) black hook press (english) fantagraphics (english) floating world comics (english) glacier bay books (english, japanese) hollow press (english, italian, japanese)
TACO ché (japanese) akatako (japanese) popotame (japanese) seikosha (japanese) torch (japanese)
le dernier cri (french, english) lézard noir (french) éditions imho (french)
cococino press (italian) canicola (italian)
happy shopping :)
nice rec, editions matiere is another nice one. there’s lots of great places like these that focus on alternative comics. domino comics is also pretty good, although they are super manga-orthogonal.
Our comic glaeolia made it onto a few peoples lists for tcj’s end of the year list. Happy to see it happen and looking forward to putting out more issues in the future. Also if you missed the first issue, we will release a digital version sometime soon. Everything’s already been worked through on the permissions side so we just have to go through some things with the platforms it will go on.

En chan “movie version” animated rough draft. Just amazing stuff. Check out their other animation work (saigo no shudan) as well.
new work En Chan is starting to come out.... their stuff is amazing, a rich symbolic visual spectacle. Check out their instagram. Also, they posted an amazing animated movie version of the rough draft for the work... I’ll find that and post it as well.
You can check out chapter 1 from Glacier Bay Books here.
An exclusive preview of 2020's *second* gigantic showcase for recent small-press manga, with extensive commentary by the editors!
Here is the TCJ talk we did with Jog for issue 2. This features a small preview about each of the works and also some other tidbits. If you’re interested in the anthology and want to get an idea of the comics inside and what they look like, please take a look.
This was a really fun talk Laika and I did with Jog. Afterwards I occasionally remembered things I meant to mention but forgot in the moment, and have since slipped from my mind again to meander amongst the ether. I think the snippets of description Jog put in for each story, as well as the sample pages, give a good sense for the selection.
The second issue was really strong, and I think we’re going to take that to whole new levels –– and in some brand new directions –– for the third issue.

i’m too lazy to make a preview post for authors, but a preview will go up on tcj tomorrow, so you guys can just take a look at that if you want to know more about who is in the second anthology. anyways, the second book is available for preorder here.
haven’t been here in so long... and now i’m just leaving a promo post. sigh.
check out the new Glaeolia anthology here: https://glacierbaybooks.com/product/glaeolia2-standard/
If you like the cover you can get a (3 color) art print of the complete painting as well (under “bundle”).
