So I went and made a Patreon. It’s kind of a major contributing factor to why I’ve only been posting pencil sketches, since the only time I really tend to have for drawing is during breaks or waiting for programs to load at work =/

Hello. I'm new. What's a Thri'kreen?

I guess they’re technically “Thri-kreen” with a hyphen. But they’re a race of big anthropomorphic mantids, I believe, originally introduced in D&D’s Dark Sun/ Athas setting. All the mantis people I’ve posted over the years are my interpretation of the race.

I apologise for this if it's annoying but I've been asking this to some artists to view different opinions about how to draw (more than just the practice answer because I've been practicing for too long but I feel like something is missing) ¿How did you started to draw? I mean like starting from zero down to it's bare essentials? ( I apologise again if is annoying or my English is bad)

Sorry for the delay in answering, but I’ve been trying to think of what I would actually say for this... I’ll start by saying that I am a terrible teacher, and really bad at conveying thoughts in text.I mean, when I first started “drawing” I would consider when I started trying to really draw around 11, that’s when I started trying to draw really awful comics and start trying to world build. I started out at this point by trying to emulate anime, since that’s when I fell pretty hard on that anime knife. My stuff suffered for that for a while because I still didn’t really know what I was doing. Eventually I started trying to use my self as a reference. To draw arms I would look at how mine was at various positions and try to trace my finger along the lines my muscles made.I wouldn’t say I had any kind of good anatomy until after I went to art school though (unpopular opinions) which I feel really helped me, honestly. But you don’t have to go to art school to learn stuff, it just helped me to be in the kind of environment where art was a constant focus. Unfortunately, practice is still the main thing, but it could be an issue of the type of practice one does. Something that helped me, I think, was doing gesture drawings. That is, try to very quickly sketch/ scribble out a figure in motion to just capture the motion, breaking it down to very simple shapes/ lines. Like, only take a few seconds to try and get the figure thrown down. Draw from life, or even photos if you can’t get to a place where you can try to draw people walking around. This can help a lot with figuring out how to lay out a human form in motion/ action.Another thing that I feel helped was breaking figures down into simple skeletons/ shapes and working your way up to an actual figure. If I was able to stream right now or something, I think I could do a lot more good with this, but, like I said, I’m really bad at conveying things in text... I hope this helped some at least =/

I made a startling discovery this evening. I’ve been a thri’kreen enthusiast since 3.5, how the fuck did I miss this!? I’ve been drawing them as 7′+ slender bug monsters but I’ve bene drawing them wrong! This whole time they’ve been fucking buglets! Everything I thought I knew is a lie. I don’t know what to believe anymore... My god... what else don’t I know?

Well, assuming you’re asking me directly, and not speaking ‘within setting’ terms, I usually stick to robes, dresses, and cloaks and such as they are loose fitting and could feasibly allow to cover the little abdomen tail I give them, and the loose sleeves are pretty good for accommodating their weird arm anatomy. What ever they wear, it’s gotta have either holes or additional sleeves for the little arms. Also, dresses/ skirts/ robes/ loin cloths have the added benefit of I think they look better and are easier to work with for digitigrade legs, or at least the wide, chitinous ones I draw Thri’kreen with at any rate. From an in setting perspective, they’re usually in fantasy settings so 3 piece suits would kind of stand out a bit :V Was this just a sneaky way of getting a sketch of your D20 Modern character?
