today's forage! chicken of the woods and blackberries. I walked past the first patch of blackberries without picking any. then when I got to the second patch I decided I did indeed want some. I'll probably go back in a day or so to visit the same place for more berries. after my hike I had some of the chicken for lunch and also snacked on the blackberries. I am getting very excited for September mushrooms...🍄✨️

today's birds! the swifts and barn swallows were out by the dozens, just doing flight acrobatics back and forth along the lake. I did also get a glimpse of the belted kingfisher, which was a delight. that red shouldered hawk is confirmed - I saw it getting chased away again. today's best bird is not listed here, but I ran into it nonetheless. a beautiful ruby throated hummingbird! it was flitting about the purple loosestrife just doing its thing until we locked eyes and it jetted away. I patiently waited in that same spot though and as I watched butterflies, it sparkled around me for a while.

how a milk cap mushroom gets its name. it bleeds milk when cut or broken. this substance is called latex and is like a protection reaction, causing the fungi to taste funky to any bugs trying to munch away. as it sits for a bit, it also gets tacky/sticky - like a nature glue trap for tiny insects. these mushrooms come in beautiful colors, and the latex can be orange, or even blue (would love to see in person). 🍄✨️
