lord..
Just got back from Janelle’s concert. It’s impossible to …it’s not even worth it to attempt talking about it. Nothing will do it justice, you really just have to go if you can. Please. Please don’t miss THIS particular tour.
This main crowd for the concert was INCREDIBLY diverse, which, was beautiful. For everything Janelle promotes and exudes, diversity is important and it’s so cool to see that at her show. It was racially diverse. It was sexually diverse. There were young and old people. REALLY young and REALLY old! I saw a dad who’d brought his daughter and that touched me. Saw a lot of young kids, mostly young black girls which is exactly right. And y’all THE MOTHERS were there, as in church mothers. Janelle had a whole mother’s board watching her hump everything and everyone on stage. There were hipsters, actual rich people, broke college kids who probably skipped lunch for two weeks to afford tickets, many queer couples, straight married couples, men and women and everything in between and outside of gender. Did I mention queer people!? FAM! An amazing experience to see one person bring that many different kind of people together with the same message.
She said after her first song “You found out a little about how I like to love. HAPPY PRIDE FOREVER!” and that was dope.
Before “Cold War” she said we need to keep fighting for LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, disabled people’s rights, black people’s rights and immigrant rights. And amazingly, she said we need to keep fighting until Flint has clean water. She played a benefit concert for Flint a while ago so it’s nice she’s one of few celebrities that realizes their act of kindness in Flint didn’t really fix anything, unfortunately, and people are still suffering.
Before “So Afraid” she asked that people take care of their mental health which was pretty huge to hear that aloud. I like that a black woman with a platform is promoting mental health.
She showed her whole ass on “Tightrope”. It was like 20 minutes of James Brown antics.
And finally, sad (not rly) to report she, in fact, STILL has not learned Jidenna’s rap in “Yoga”. I think if she would stop grabbing ass and getting distracted she might be okay. She got mad and threw her hat this time lol
She ends the show with “Americans” and it is so FUCKING powerful I won’t try to describe it. But I will note she does this repetition: raised fist > arms crossed over heart > hand over heart>arm down to the side. It’s so badass and poignant with the sermon. And at the end she knelt on one knee with her hand over her heart. I will remind you how many fucking white people were at this show and so many were so confused about the tone of this song lol.
She’s just an incredible performer. She fucked that stage so hard it’s gonna be saying her name while other people perform on it from here on out.
