     “You’re a sweet boy, you know that?” Selina smiled softly. She didn’t see a way that she could ever be friend with Jim, but she wasn’t about to crush Peter’s spirit. It was nice that he was so open and hopeful when it came to others, she only hoped that he wouldn’t ever be taken advantage of because of it. “Your name too? That’s so awesome. A lot of people spell my name wrong, but that’s okay” In fact, it had actually worked in Selina’s favour in some cases. “I love sprinkles, they’re the best part…what kind of cake do you like?”

Peter giggled as Selina spoke, beaming up at her. “T’anks,” he said, smiling at her again. “Mama says dat a lot.” He craned his neck to look up at Barbara, offering her another bright smile. Babs smiled back at him and leaned down to kiss his forehead. “Because you’re the sweetest boy in the world,” she told him. Peter giggled and squirmed a little. “Mama,” he sighed. “Dat’s funny. How do you know dat? The world is big!” He looked over at Selina. “How do you spell it?” he asked curiously. “Peter is easy. Mama and my sister is harder. But it’s the same name. So that helps.” He considered her question for a minute. “All cake,” he decided. “Cake is so yummy. I can’t choose.”

Something Theo appreciated about Barbara, is that even when they weren’t at her club she always managed to have wine somewhere hidden. “You always bring out the good stuff or am I just special?” He tried to joke though it was clear his heart wasn’t it. “Friday, that’s close.” He took the wine in hand and poured it into the glass. Normally he usually swung it from the bottle but he didn’t want to be rude for Barbara’s hospitality. The wine filled to the top of the glass, sitting itself comfortably at the rim before Theo lifted the glass to meet his lips. One gulp, then another and a third one following until his glass was mostly empty. “Sounds good,” He didn’t want to disappoint the little man (though Theo was unsure which way would disappoint him, being his actual uncle or not). “Sounds like a plan.” Drinking either way was a comfort, as well as the extended company that came with either outcome. It was a strange relief in his chest that she didn’t feel the need to kick him out the moment they found out not to be related (or the latter, possibly).

Barbara arched an eyebrow at Theo as he spoke, a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips. “Honey, I only have the good stuff,” she said. “Life is too short and too depressing to drink anything less.” She gave a shrug as he spoke. “Yeah, well, better to know than to wonder forever,” she said. She paused, looking over at Theo. “He likes you, you know,” she said. “My son.” She didn’t say that Peter liked pretty much everyone. The toddler could probably make friends with the devil himself, just by smiling up at him and offering to share his graham crackers. She glanced over at him. “So you should probably keep coming around, no matter the results,” she went on, her tone casual enough. “Because Peter likes you. He wouldn’t understand why you went away.”

      “Never cave to panic. If you do, you die.” Jason told Peter as Babs walked into her lavish home. Looking up at the child’s mother, he greeted her with a nod. “You’re back early.” Earlier than he thought she would be honestly. “How was it?”

Peter sipped thoughtfully at his Capri Sun, looking up at Jason with big blue eyes. “Otay,” he said finally. “Mama has a panic room. She showed me it. I had to hide in dere once. I wasn’t scared, though.” He looked up as Babs walked in, tossing the -- fortunately empty -- juice pouch aside and hopping off his chair. “Mama!” Babs leaned down and scooped him up, giving him a kiss before settling him on her hip. “Fine,” she said. “It was a meeting with a new vendor. They tried to take advantage of me and it didn’t go well.” She smiled wolfishly. “What were you telling my kid, exactly?”

He couldn’t find fault in her words, nor insult. They felt more like fact more than a fight, so his shoulders fell into a sag in as close to agreement as he could offer. “Guess not.” Not much different at all. He chuckled lowly at her pride, it was cheeky and fun. He wondered if they could remain friends if everything ended up being untrue and this was some strange incident all over. “Friday, huh.” A lump was deep in Theo’s throat, he tried to swallow it. “Don’t suppose you wanna open the results together?” Somehow, the idea of seeing them with her felt a bit more of a relief than being told.

Babs hummed softly as he spoke, padding to the kitchen and coming out again a few moments later with a bottle of wine, a pair of wine glasses in the other. If he didn’t drink wine, well -- maybe she’d just switch between the two herself. “Friday,” she repeated. She poured herself a healthy dose of merlot and took a long sip, glancing at him over the rim of her glass. A part of her wanted to say no -- it had always been hard for her to lean on others, with one exception that had only proven to her that it was absolute bullshit to do that. But she looked at him and saw that he needed it. Her heart wasn’t so black as she might like people to believe. “Alright,” she said. “Peter is with his father Friday night, so at least we’ll have some privacy.” She shrugged. “If it’s good news, we crack open the champagne. Bad news, hard liquor. How does that sound?”

     “Yeah, well it’s alright to not be friends with the people that your friends are friends with sometimes. It just means that you’re different people” Selina explained, maintaining her light expression even though it brought Jim to mind. He was an inevitable part of being friends with Barbara, one that she did her best to endure for the sake of her friend more than for his own sake. “That is seven days, good job!” she laughed, finding his excitement adorable. She would have to get some treats, something told her that he’d enjoy handing them out to all of the cats. Selina’s eyes narrowed slightly as she looked over Peter’s head at Barbara, not enjoying that the blonde was clearly enjoying that she would have to speak to Jim, but she quickly let it go. “Really? I was hoping that you would say that. I’m terrible at making cupcakes so I think with your help that would be really fun, right?”

Babs couldn’t help but smirk as Selina spoke, knowing full well who the other woman was thinking about. She would be connected to Jim Gordon for the rest of her life; even though they weren’t together anymore, they had two children. That connection sometimes put pressure on her other relationships, but she was quick to assure anyone who asked that whatever feelings she’d had for Jim were long gone. “Mmm, I guess so,” the little boy agreed. “I t’ink it’s good to be friends. You can be friends w’it anyone if you try. Dat’s what I t’ink.” He beamed as she confirmed a week was seven days, clearly pleased with himself. “T’anks, I’ve been learning,” he said. “I can spell my name, too.” Babs just grinned at her friend as she looked at her over the top of Peter’s strawberry-blonde head. Peter giggled. “Yeah, it’ll be fun!” he said brightly. “Do you like spwinkles?”

“You lack a ‘keep-out’ sign.” Then again, a highly fortified roof without an easy door to access didn’t exactly need one. Most people didn’t have Yelena’s roof jumping expertise. “Good view.” Enjoyable in fact, it was what led her to it in the first place. “Maybe I like the thrill.” She suggested with a shrug, eyes dancing along the drop below. Really was a fall, truly was something thrilling. Especially knowing she’d find a way to survive, it was always interesting figuring out HOW. “Do I look like a crook to you?” She asked, a tilt of her head with the question. Not that Yelena wasn’t capable but this was her usual attire, not her ‘criminal’ attire. She was somewhat insulted.

Babs huffed softly, raising an eyebrow. “Yeah, I’ll get right on that,” she said sarcastically. “Maybe I’ll just put a wrought-iron fence around the perimeter of the roof up here. Nice and pointy.” She snorted. “Right,” she said. “You can find another building to play chicken with gravity. This one is mine.” She shrugged. “Everyone is a crook,” she said. “Some people just don’t bother hiding it.” She smiled and shrugged again. “People would probably look at me and say I’m not a crook, but I lie, and I cheat, and I steal, and I’ve done worse things than that.” She flashed Yelena another smile. “And I don’t feel bad,” she said. “I did what I had to do, and if other people got hurt in the process, well…” She gave another shrug. “They were in my way.”

       “Did you want to?” He asked, pushing her until she wouldn’t let him anymore. It was who he was as a psychiatrist. He wanted to push her to open up, to get to know herself better, to find the root of the issue. “You think if?” Jonathan tried to encourage her to continue, but the thought was gone with the next breath she took. She was still holding back, not letting him in the way that she needed to. A flash of disgust echoed across his features at Barbara’s words. Parents weren’t protectors, at least not any of the ones he knew. “Well, I think that for Jim Gordon, it’s a good thing that he doesn’t.” The violent streak didn’t surprise him. He knew the blonde in front of him well, perhaps even a little too well to think that she didn’t mean what she said. One foot out of line and Jim Gordon would be skinned like a deer. There was something pleasing about that idea, but he kept that thought to himself. “You didn’t want to marry Roman Sionis?” He asked, a little surprised by the way she had said it. Roman was everything that Barbara loved. The height of luxury and crime.

Babs shrugged. “You know, when they died, I’m sure plenty of people suspected me,” she said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if my own sister does. At the very least she blames me for it. And you know what? If I had been there that night, if whoever the hell did it had offered me the chance to do it myself, I don’t know if I would have said no.” She shrugged again. “But that would have been too easy. It wouldn’t have hurt them in the way I wanted to hurt them.” She looked over at him. “He wouldn’t, anyway,” she admitted. She could say a lot of things against Jim Gordon but his love for his children would never be something she would cast doubt on. She smiled faintly as she considered her answer, knowing that he would think it was ridiculous. “I was sixteen and in love,” she said. “And subsequently I was pregnant. My mother kicked me out of the house and the only reason she ever let me cross the threshold again was because people liked the Gordons, and people respected them for taking care of me. She couldn’t stand to see others getting praise. Especially for something so negligible as giving a damn about me.”

I had no idea, however will I go on?” His sarcasm was without bite to it, and he swung a drink from his glass soon after. “Peter Pan and the Scrooge, never thought those would go together in a sentence.” Theo said. “I really wouldn’t.” She must have been the same, their mom that is. That is if it was their. “So uh,” Suddenly more nervous than he would like to admit, Theo asked. “Have the tests come back yet?”

Babs just looked at him as he spoke so dryly, arching an eyebrow to indicate that she wasn’t particularly impressed with his facetious tone. “The boy who never grew up and the lonely, miserable old man aren’t really that different,” she said, with a shrug. She flashed him a smile as she spoke. “No one would,” she said. She gave another little shrug, trying to hide her own nerves. “Not yet,” she said. “They said they would be in by Friday.”

Babs raised an eyebrow. “I hate to break it to you, but you’re getting older whether or not you have a birthday party,” she said dryly. “You don’t become Peter Pan just because you become the Scrooge of birthdays.” She shrugged. “I wasn’t exactly thrilled to turn 40, but I dyed my hair and had a fabulous party.” She preened a little. “Now look at me. You wouldn’t think I was almost 44.”

     Selina’s heart melted as she saw the way that Peter was looking up at her. She could understand why Barbara adored her children so much suddenly, although, she did have to look past the fact that they were related to Jim Gordon of all people. “I’m sure that Donut loves it when you come to stay. Do you take Badge with you or does he stay here to keep your Mama company, huh?” she asked before giggling at she watched the excitement grow on his face. “Oh, of course!” she beamed, having given up on trying to hold back her own excitement when Barbara agreed. “I’m free next week, you can come by anytime” she assured him. She trusted that her friend would give her enough notice to make sure that she was home at least. “Oh a party, huh? I wouldn’t miss it”

Peter giggled. “No, Badge stays here,” he said. “I don’t think Donut would like Badge. Even though I like Badge.” Babs smiled faintly. “Donut is a German shepherd,” she explained. “I think Jim adopted him from the K9 unit after Donut retired.” Peter squealed happily as Selina agreed that they could come over soon to see the cats. “Yeah, okay!” he said. “Yeah, next week. That’s seven days. I know that.” Peter beamed up at her again. “Okay!” He looked up at Babs. “She can come, Mama, can’t she? If she wants to?” Babs smiled softly and shrugged. “Of course, if she wants to,” she said, and then grinned at Selina, knowing how little the woman would enjoy being at a party Jim was attending. “We’re gonna, um…Mama is getting a bouncy house. And we’re gonna play games. N’make cupcakes. I’ll help you make one.”

       Her body language was intriguing. Barbara was clearly uncomfortable. It was indicated by her self soothing behavior. Her eyes moved past him, somewhere beyond him. There was nothing behind him though, of that he was sure. A hallucination perhaps? Crane jotted that down. “No, she can’t. But she does, doesn’t she? Her words still effect you.” Listening to her story, his features remained blank. Sympathy was something he lacked. It could have been broken down to his childhood. When so many horrible things happened to you, it was hard to feel bad for anyone else. This wasn’t about him though, it was about the blonde in front of him. “Why were you angry?” Crane asked, wanting to see if she could identify the root. “So because she didn’t tell you she loved you, that lead you to the conclusion that she hated you?” It wasn’t exactly an outlandish though, especially for a child or young woman.

Babs could feel how tense her posture was, and she tried to relax, but it was no use. It was as though someone had laid an iron rod between her shoulders. She knew it wouldn’t go away as long as she kept talking to Jon about this. Not that she would particularly enjoy talking to anyone about her parents. She shrugged. “I never got to do anything about it,” she said. “She didn’t care what I said or did. I think if…” She stopped, lifting her chin. It was probably too late for this, but she didn’t want Jon to know that she was falling into the role he wanted from her. “I’m angry because if anyone should protect you, it’s your parent,” she said. “It’s your family. I would peel Jim Gordon like a goddamn grape if I for one second thought he’d treated my daughter or my son the way my mother treated me.” She shrugged. “It wasn’t just that. I was never good enough for her. Everything about me, she tried to change, from my weight to who I was dating. You know she really wanted me to marry Roman Sionis? Roman.”

“Barbara?” He couldn’t keep the surprise out of his voice when he spotted his old friend. Waltzing into the building as if she owned the place. (Last he checked, no one owned this particular building). Making it a wonderful new spot for a hideout. Ed liked to change hideouts every six months. And not only that, he’d have a few of them at one time. He liked the security of it. He’d been checking this old place out when the woman interrupted. Curiosity began to get the better of him before he could control himself. “What are you doing here?” 

Babs’ head whipped around as she heard Ed’s voice, her hand automatically going into her purse for her gun. “Jesus, Ed,” she said, pulling her hand out of her purse — empty — and putting it against her racing heart instead. “Where the hell did you come from? You walk around like goddamn Nosferatu.” She frowned, looking over at him. “How long have you been here?” Babs shrugged. “I was just looking around,” she said. “I could make use of it. Maybe a sister location for the Sirens.” She looked at him. “What are you doing here?”

     “Oh, the fluffy kind? I see” Selina couldn’t help but giggle, he was just so sweet. “Ah, see, there we go” she grinned, nodding gently towards Barbara when she clarified what Peter had meant. “Badge is a very cute name for a cat. I really like original names like that” The cat wasn’t such a huge fan of the inspiration for either of the cat names but she could allow it for the sake of the fact that the cats were probably very cute. “I do have kitties. A lot of kitties, actually” she grinned. She had actually lost count, but that was beside the point. “Perhaps you and your mom could come over and see them all one day” Selina suggested, sparing a glance towards Barbara. She wouldn’t push for anything that the blonde wasn’t comfortable with. “Three already? Woah, you’re going to get so big and strong”

Peter giggled back at her, looking up at her with a bright smile on his face. Babs smoothed her fingers gently through her son’s curls, cuddling him close and making him giggle again. “Thank you,” Peter said humbly. “Mama said I should name Badge like Duchess. From the kitty movie. But I like Badge. Daddy named Donut but I helped. Donut lives with Daddy. I see him on Friday, n’Saturday and Sunday when I see Daddy.” Peter gasped as Selina told him that she had a lot of cats, and Babs bit her lip to keep from laughing. “A lot?” he repeated. He looked up at Babs hopefully. “Mama, can we go see? Please?” She kissed his forehead. “Of course, baby, if you want to.” The little boy beamed happily. “Yeah! Soon, okay? Please?” he said, addressing this to Selina. He beamed. “Yeah!” he said. “I have a party Saturday. You can come if you want.”

     “Oh, really? What kind of kitty is it?” She asked with a grin, the question more for Barbara but her eyes stayed on Peter. Selina could talk about her cats for hours so she was grateful to move onto a subject she could discuss with ease. “I will have to keep my eye out for Badge, then” Unusual name. Although, Selina was a fan of those too. She had to start getting creative with names when she started adopting more than the typical household’s worth of cats. “Hmm maybe. I’m sure he will” she nodded, keeping all of the distaste that she held towards Jim Gordon off of her face. Even if he was, at times, the bane of her existence, Jim was clearly this little boy’s entire world and Selina wasn’t heartless enough to spoil that.

Peter’s expression grew thoughtful. “Mmm, the fluffy kind,” he said, after a minute. “Yeah, and he’s small.” Babs laughed softly as her son spoke. “He’s a snowshoe cat,” she said. “He’s right, though, Badge is very fluffy.” Peter giggled. “I named him after da police badge,” he said. “Daddy has a dog named PeeDee Donut. Cause PD means police. And cops like donuts.” He giggled again, peeping up at Selina. “You have kitties?” he said. “Do you have a lot?” Babs smiled faintly as Selina spoke about him, her fingers brushing through her son’s strawberry blonde curls. She knew Selina wasn’t remotely fond of Jim and she could understand why, but she herself rarely said anything against him, and certainly never did so in front of their children. Peter looked up at Selina. “It’s my bir’day soon,” he said. “I’ll be this many.” He held up three fingers.
