    Cheryl had only eaten the cherry off of her strawberry milkshake. The rest, she was simply eyeing in silence, contemplating. She tended not to eat in front of others much.   ❝ You sang with the Pussycats? How did I miss it? ❞   She rolls her eyes lightly.   ❝ Oh, right, because my mother has me on house arrest. I’m the Martha Stewart of Riverdale High. I’m losing my mind. ❞   She pouts at Veronica across the table, and then she shifts in the booth to lean a little closer.   ❝ Between you and I, V – I’m starting to like your mother more than my own. Which is a stretch. ❞

she cannot help but to feel   somewhat   smug,  for she is more than just a pretty face.  veronica supposes that cheryl understands what it is to be judged on the glossy lipstick or the   curls   of hair rather than the person inside of that body.      ❝  there was some   drama   with val,   but josie was sweet enough to not kick me out when val came back to sing with them.  it was pretty awesome,   actually.   ❞      the next statement   prompts   a bitter snort and ronnie shakes her head,  tongue swiping over   cherry   lips.      ❝  don’t speak too soon.   apparently my mom has the potential to become a   queen   bitch,  too.  i just didn’t know it.   ❞

Cheryl rested her chin on her knuckles and looked across the table at Veronica.   ❝ Since I couldn’t make it to the variety show, you’ll have to tell me all about it. What’s the gossip? ❞   Her eyebrows raised – deviously playful.

so much happened that veronica isn’t quite sure where to start,  the  silence   is broken by the slurp of her vanilla milkshake before she   decides   that the start will be the best place to begin.      ❝  well,  i sung with the pussycats.  but josie’s dad walked   out   halfway through,  and then archie made his debut.  it was quite the night,  really.   you should have been there.   ❞      she doesn’t mention that her mom has   forged   her signature,   that she is losing her   family   to fred andrews.   that’s a wound that she is not ready to lay bare.
