“i would hardly call it a proposal given how unromantic it was. he did as me to marry him and i did try to be polite about it but my fathers death is still so raw to me and he started saying about how it was for the benefit of an alliance. how romantic. i did not think they were civil. my advisors think it is a good idea given stannis’ position and friends.”

“Of course it is,” Margaery responded with a sympathetic expressions. “The deaths of my own father and brother are still so new to me, even with the time that has elapsed. The supposed year of mourning does not heal a wound as deep as the loss of family.” Margaery smiled at Arianne’s paraphrasing of Stannis’ words–it was perfectly unromantic, which suited Stannis. “Have Dorne and the Stormlands not already solidified their alliance through the marriage of your brother and Shireen? It seems extraneous to me, to yet again cement to the same exact relationship.”

“And to be frank, Your Grace–” Margaery laid a hand upon Arianne’s arm, smiled sweetly, and inquired: “–may I call you Arianne? As I was saying, to be quite frank about the matter, Stannis’ friendships do not take him far. They start and end at the Vale, aside from what relationship he has incurred with Dorne.”

someone that understood the recent death of a father was a gift to arianne. she thought that only they knew how she was feeling so she had already felt as if she had connected to margaery in that way.

“you are correct. i cannot just grieve him for a year and then that is it. i need more and i think that he deserves that as well. you are correct. they have indeed which is also why i do not see whyi should further and alliance anymore give that there is a child between that union now. to do that again seems little frivolous. of course. i would prefer you call me by my name and not my title.”

arianne listened closely to what margaery was saying.

“the vale is a good and strong ally i will give him that but there isnot real alliance there. now that sansa has given that king a son perhapsstannis can make alliance through his grandchild and the new prince. that is, if he is so desperate to make stronger alliances. ”

The servant returned, followed by a wildling teenage girl, who gawked at the Dornishwoman.

“Sorry, Lady,” the servant said. “She started following me when she saw me get the wine.”

“It’s all right,” Alys said, recognizing the girl. “Arianne, this is Sarli. Sarli, Arianne.”

That seemed like a lot of positions for people not accustomed to Westeros and only used to what was beyond the Wall and the lack of laws there. She tried to think of that and just thought that sixteen years was a long time and they must be used to it by now and if they weren’t, the Lady of the land did not seem to mind having so many Wildlings around.

“you have such an interestign arrangement here, i quite like it which is not what i had first thought. i can see that karhold is thriving with the mix of wildlings and westeros so you must all be doing something right, i suppose. Very few people ever came to see Val, that mostly being because she only played nice when she had to, so it was near impossible to hide the surprise on her face though she kept it contained to a simple eyebrow raise. She knew she was a novelty, a wildling princess in captivity, but she certainly didn’t expect people to dredge all the way to Castle Black just to see her, it wasn’t like she was a giant or some other creature that the southerners rarely saw. “Good things? Now that is a shock” her voice was laced with sarcasm, the people south of the wall were not known to have good things to say about the wildlings who lived beyond the wall. “I have no tales that would suit a southern flowers sensibilities.”

“ a flower? i am certainly not a flower and i can handle something small as a few stories from someone from a different place than i am. why don’t you tell me a few and then you can decided if i am too delicate a flower to carry on with a story or two then i will not ask you again. why not try?“

It was another cold and dreary day at Castle Black, the snow fell as usual and all who need not be outside were taking shelter within the castle’s walls. There was one however who braved the cold, a woman in a bearskin cloak who seemed neither bothered nor eager to get inside. She was a sight that the men of the nights watch had long since become accustomed to, one many of them enjoyed as a matter of fact. Val, the Wildling Princess. It was a well-known fact that Val hated to be idle, she didn’t like to be huddled up inside all day and if she got bored well…gods help them all. Despite her having lived at Castle Black for many years she had still not grown fond of the Crows that surrounded her day in and day out, when she got bored she would often take to fighting them under the guise of ‘training’ and very few escaped without injury. It was perhaps for that very reason that all the trainees below breathed a silent sigh of relief as they saw someone approach her. Val, however, was less pleased. She had become accustomed to having to deal with the southerners on behalf of her people but that did not mean that she enjoyed it any more than when she had first bent the knee to Selyse Baratheon. She didn’t bother to turn around to address them “Whatever you are here for must be very important to bring you this far north” It was only a little patronizing, that was something Lord Crow had requested she work on when dealing with the people south of the wall.

arianne had only ever heard stories of the wildling princess and with each tale and supposed account, she grew more and more curious about this princess. when she had asked one of the black brothers, they said she was not a princess. that was a name given to her but if she was related to the self-proclaimed king beyond the wall that made her royalty by her own account. just seeing her made her think that this princess certainly looked the part. she was beautiful. just as much as she was beautiful, arianne thought she would be dangerous as well.

“ perhaps. i had come to see you actually. i have heard so much about the wildling princess that i wanted to put a face to all the good things i have heard about you. i hope you will entertain me with a tale. “

Alys nodded and led her guest as quickly as she could across the bridge and into Karhold. The Dornish woman was beautiful, and merely looking at her olive skin made Alys think of warmth and sun and sand. Someday, she thought suddenly, I want to go to Dorne. A part of her considered asking Sigorn if he would wish to go with her, but the image of her wild husband in a desert palace made her want to laugh.

She ushered Arianne into one of the sitting rooms and sent a servant for spiced wine before facing her guest.

“I’m so glad you’ve come,” she said with a smile, suddenly feeling like a giddy child again. “I do apologize, it has been so long since I’ve seen a woman here who was not a wildling.”

the walk really was it that long and so she did not mind it in the slightest but she was always looking for any sign of wildlings in karhold, hoping to spot one. the thought of them being so close excited her as if she were a young girl again. something she would not say out loud.

“you do not even need to apologise. the only women i spend time with are my cousins and so i long for a bit more just to talk about something else. i am very curious about your arrangement with the wildlings, i mean free folk, how does it work and do you have any of them living with you except your husband?”

The Rose Queen found that she very easily liked the Dornish Queen. “I suppose that you have a point.” Humming at Arianne’s response, Margaery nodded. “Willas acts as an adviser, more than anything. His title remains, but that is the truth of it. And I could think of no better adviser for my son–there is no one more intelligent, in all the realm.” At Arianne’s admittance concerning Stannis, Margaery’s brows rose. “Stannis? He proposed marriage?” Margaery huffed at the idea of civility between Stannis and Renly. “If by civility, he means that neither Renly nor himself seeks to actively kill one another, then I suppose…but it hardly fits the definition in my opinion. Renly can never trust Stannis, and rightfully so.”

“Welcome to Karhold. Yes, we have a warm fire in the palace, but sadly, this is merely the gatehouse. We shall have to venture once more into the cold to get to the castle. Would you rather wait a moment?”

Her smile grew as excitement blossomed in her stomach. She was happy in Karhold, and she had grown quite fond of her husband and his people, but it would be lovely to spend time with another noble lady.

the northern girl was quite pretty and arianne wondered how she was finding her marriage with a wildling. it must be going well since it had been over fourteen years and no word of a conflict had come to reach the ears of dorne. even thought she did know her, arianne was happy for her. she had heard why alys had gotten married to a wildling and found that to be quite amazing and brave.

“your concern is quite kind and touching but i will be perfectly fine. i have visited the north a few times in the past before my fathersdeath and a little bit after. it is a beautiful place.i find northerners to be very loyal to their lands just like those from dorne. a little longer in the cold will be fine.”

The Dornish woman would not have gotten to where she was if the reality was to the contrary. “But, we can find happiness for ourselves even in spite of it.” “Nor should you be forced to,” the Rose Queen agreed. “So far as Willas is concerned…it is an interesting arrangement, how we currently handle the matter of Highgarden. Willas is lord, but Joseph rules as prince–it’s all unnecessarily complicated. When it comes to contentment, I think you would find Willas to be very agreeable. He was raised around and by strong women. He does not fear them, as most men do.”

“i have no doubt about the standard of men that highgarden raises. in all truthi have never heard anything negative said about your brothers even with our families complicated history. that is quite commendable.”

her duty would always come first and even before other peoples needs that was not in dorne .dorne was her duty always and she had fought for it to remain that way as had many . blood had been spilled so she could keep that duty and she was not give it away. that meant a king was out of the question for her groom.

“when i needed it most, they had alligned just fine. affection from others, and mostly men, are incredibly easy to navigate so it aligns with my duty and what i want from it. happiness sometimes comes of it too. if it ends well enough so that all are alive then there might be a chance of happiness.”

it was good to hear that someone else had felt the same as her. a lot of her advisors had told her to set her sights on the northern king or even to consider stannisbaratheons offer but she did not consider either of them.

“i had wondered how you managed that. a price and a lord ruling the same place did seem complicated but your family is strong enough to work it all out. that makes him even more of a prospect in my eyes. did you know that stannis came asking for my hand? he says he is civil with his brother buti am no fool. i cannot expect someone to be civil after all of what that he did. ”
