“What kind of trackers do we have? I mean, I’m okay at telling when things are coming. Just not where they’ve been.” Which was, as Abilene knew, not tracking at all. But knowing noises had to be something, if they didn’t have anybody else. “Dionysus.” Abilene said, “You’re from one of the fighting gods, right?” The specifics eluded her, unfortunately.

“I don’t know, you’re the one who has been keeping track of everyone, you tell me who we should hire as a tracker. Probably someone who has been on a quest or something before though. Or someone from the Athena cabin.” Ruby stuffed her hands in the pockets of her coat, “Really? You’re mr D’s kid?” she said, observing her companion, trying to find similarities between their camp director and this girl. Besides the dark hair she couldn’t find many, but then again gods could change their appearance whenever and however they wanted. At Abilene’s next question, her eyes lit up quite literally. Just for a second they seemed to be made of flames, like her father’s eyes were often described. Her body language become kind of arrogant “The fighting god. Ares, god of war and all that.” she said, with a proud tone to her voice. “I thought you’d have known that too.”

“Unfortunately, there’s not many opportunities to see who can track around here. Probably because there’s nothing to track, unless you want monsters, in which case...” Abilene held up her hand to her head, as if she was talking on a cell phone. It seemed universal enough to her. You call someone, that’s monster attracting. “And yes, I am Mr. D’s kid. What did you expect?” Abilene shrugged. Godly parents meant little to her, though knowing someone else’s was a good icebreaker, and a way to find out what someone might be good at. Apollo kids, archery, medicine. Poseidon kids, water. Ares kids, fighting. It was one way that Abilene had considered trying to find her ‘recruits’ but then, not everybody is like their parents. She wasn’t always drinking wine. “Ooh, definitely a fighter then.” She grinned. “And, often, it’s way easier to find out names and strengths then GPs. I’m not a total stalker. Probably.”

“Of course I am. No one else seems to be doing anything about it.” Abilene grinned, “Wish I could find more good people, though. No one seems particularly interested, from what I’ve seen”

“It’s not really big news - people disappearing. Doesn’t it happen all the time? Might not even be anything mythical,” Lily says with a shrug. “But I’m always up for a little adventure.” She grins. “How many other people you got so far?”

“Not big news? Damn. And here I thought the world had a little bit of heart. Well, I’ve got Ruby, and...you? That’s about it.” Abilene shrugged, “Not much, but a start, at least. And I’m sure I can find others. But I kinda wanna be discreet about it.” she shrugged.

“Have you ever done this before?” Olivia asked the other girl, as she looked down at the canoe in front of them. She had been canoeing once and it had ended with her flipping the canoe in the middle of the lake and sense then she had been hesitant to try again. “I’m not that great when it comes to canoeing, just so you’re aware.” @queenofgrapejuice

“I have. It’s, um, not hard if you keep the paddle to the right side. I mean, correct side.” Abilene didn’t like water too much, and she had her hands wrapped firmly around the paddle, and looked around the lake quickly. “Or something like that? And, uh, no worries if you’re not good. I’ll be fine.” She gave Olivia a shakey smile. She just hoped they didn’t end tipped over in the water until they were closer to shore.

Abilene reached out and shook Harrison’s hand. It was so nice to meet other people, and Harrison did seem like a nice person. “Nice to meet you then! I’m Abilene.” she grinned, “So what’s your favorite thing to do at camp? Other than stating random trivia facts to strangers, that is.” Abilene herself was quite fond of the forest, and even enjoyed running from the various monsters inside, once she realized how they sounded.

Harrison continued to smile as he let his hand fall to side, “It’s wonderful to meet you Abilene,” he added as he continued to watch the girl. “I’ve always been a fan of library,” he admitted with a small laugh- “Which probably isn’t a surprise. Where do you like to spend your time?”

“The library, huh? Didn’t know we even had one of those.” Abilene tilted her head. She wondered how she missed it. Even though she didn’t read a lot, she still did find some things interesting. “So far, I like the forest the best. Or the borders. It’s so weird that the Mist works the way it does, right? Blocking everything off and all.” Abilene smoothed out her jacket.

“I’m good. You can count on that.” Abilene said no more on the subject. “As for fighters, I was thinking more of a smaller group? Apollo kids are good archers, right? And there’s like, a whole infirmary thing for healers. Maybe not somebody with the ability, but I’m sure someone can find a bag of ambrosia somewhere.”

Ruby had to see for herself how good this girl was, before she would believe it. Her standard of ‘good’ was higher than average anyways. “A small group seems like the best option.” Ruby agreed. “We only have one Apollo kid, currently. And I don’t think she’ll be right for the job, at all. Look we’re not on some mission to take over a city, right. We’re going on an investigation. So we also need people who are good at tracking.” Ruby was still thinking out loud. “The ambrosia is a good idea though, obviously. Who was your godly parent again?” she asked, actually liking the girl’s practical approach.

Abilene gave a smile. This girl did have quite the sense of humor. “Nice mouse, Maggie.” she waved off the other students, one of whom had already gone. Probably to tell Chiron. “You might get a few of those, least til Chiron makes a big announcement or something. Claiming is kinda a big deal.” she shrugged, her claiming wasn’t all that special, and she doubted people liked a fuss. “Need a guide? Head counselor’s supposed to do it…but I don’t think Ahklys has one?”

Her eyes went to the little brown mouse in her hands and smiled. “Thanks. His name’s Douglas.” She put him on her shoulder so he could finish his cheese. She hummed thoughtfully. Was it uncommon for parents to claim their children? Maybe she could count herself lucky. “Will I get an incredibly long introduction every time?” With a grin, she nodded at her. “Sure. Why wouldn’t Akhlys not have a counselor though?”

She thought about it. “Only if there’s someone who knows the whole introduction, or, as I said, Chiron tells everyone. But I think you only get all that goo once, so, lucky, I guess” The second question, Abilene had to think about for a bit. “Well, either no one has stepped up, or is eligible, to be a counselor, or there’s no one there.” she shrugged, “My cabin doesn’t have one either, but there’s only two of us there right now, I think.” She turned to face the cabins “I should probably show you where you’re staying. You have any bags?”

You seem like you’d be, y’know, useful if you came along.” she gestured to the automaton’s head on the ground. “So far, I’ve got Ruby who’s…sort of agreed. I’m hoping to get more people. Whadda ya think?”

Lily put a hand up, expression stony. “Are you suggesting treking outside the borders looking for murders and monsters?” Her lips curled up in a crooked smile. “Hell yeah, I’m in.” The daughter of Eris walked forward. “You leading this little adventure, small stuff?”

Abilene stood up, and said “No one in particular now, though I believe there’s some kind of training going on currently. Might be nice to stop by and watch, see who we might need.” she didn’t mention any more names, because she didn’t know many people around camp. In fact, most names she only knew from reputation.

“There’s always some kind of training going on.” Ruby muttered. “But, I know my qualities when it comes to monsters. I don’t know yours but you’re new, so…” she didn’t finish her sentence, but her message was clear enough.  Ruby’s mind was already racing, thinking of strategies, and the people they would need for them. “We might need some more skilled fighters, cause we’re going to walk around with a whole group of demi’s. That’s asking for trouble. We might want some archers too. Maybe a healer, but not necessarily. Camp’s nearby anyways… Any people who you’ve stalked that fit these roles?”

“Right. So, wanna go spy on some more people?” she grinned at Ruby. It seemed a good a time as ever to start working as a group. It was like accustoming a fish to water. You had to do it little by little, in case something went wrong. And her group might have a bit of conflict in it. But Abilene thought she was a good enough leader.

“Spy is a nice eufemism. Lead the way.” Ruby answered, stuffing her comic in the pocket of her signature coat. “Who is your - should I say our now? - victim?” she asked while walking alongside Abilene.

A small smile lit up Abilene’s face. Sometimes, before camp, she’d gotten teased for asking ‘dumb questions.’ “And yet they still named a salad dressing after him.” she joked, a small laugh emerging. “Anyway, how long have you been at camp for? I’m somewhat, erm, somewhat new, so I haven’t seen a lot of people around.” So, to Abilene, everyone was new, and they had experiences she could only wonder about.

Harrison nodded as he heard Abeliene’s comment about the salad dressing, he wanted more than anything to point out that it was actually named for another Caesar, but he thought that would be a bit rude. “I’ve been here for, a couple of years now?” he responded, narrowing his eyes as he tried to recall the exact number of years. “Well now you’ve met one other person! I’m Harrison by the way,” he said with a smile as he held out his hand for her to shake.

“Well, I’m honestly surprised you didn’t notice me watching you before.” she grinned and shrugged, “I was thinking, Leia or Lily maybe. Any suggestions for others?” While she did have some specifications, Abilene was hoping that people would pass some of them. Useful talents were helpful, but mostly she just wanted people who weren’t afraid. “And I’m sure there’s people at camp scarier than you.”

“I get lots of weird looks, yours didn’t stand out.” she simply said, pointing to her shaved head. “It’s your plan, you decide who to choose.” Ruby waved absentmindedly. “And yes there are people scarier than me, obviously. My siblings probably come to mind first. Now are we going to find people or stand around making small talk. You must have observed that that’s not my thing?”

Her plan wasn’t going quite as well as she thought it was. There wasn’t much of a way to get a good look at people’s skills unless you watched them train, and that wasn’t really an option. Basing her observations off of gossip, Abilene had started to stealthily trail Lilith. She hadn’t expected the other girl to be so…observant, though. She caught on that the daughter of Eris had realized that she was being followed when she approached Abilene. “Hi.” Abilene said, looking at the other girl. Now was a good a time as ever if she wanted to ask her to participate. @lily-swan

Lily sighed in exasperation and sheathed the two stygian iron blades at her back as she stared at the younger girl. “Hey. The fuck you want, kid? I’m trying to beat shit up.” Behind her, the dented automaton’s head fell off.

What was it that they were supposed to say when someone got claimed? Abilene had remembered all the various ways a god claimed a child, and this was definitely Akhlys. Uncertain if anyone else was going to do it, she stepped forward and said “Hail, random kid. Daughter of Akhlys. Keeper of the death mist. Lady of poisons. Primordial Goddess of misery…and all that.” she did a quick bow and said “Oh yeah, welcome to camp. I’m Abilene Marceau, daughter of Dionysus.” This girl certainly knew how to make an entrance, and caught Abilene’s attention.

Maggie almost laughed. Was this how they were supposed to great people at this place? With a laughing smirk, she did a clumsy curtsy. “Great thanks to the girl who gives strange introductions.” The little mouse in her hand squeaked again and Maggie fed him a small piece of cheese she had in her pocket. “Abilene,” she repeated. “That’s a lot better than ‘girl who gives strange introductions.’ A lot less wordy too.” She smiled at her. “I’m Maggie.”

Gotta appriciate the honesty.” She showed a fake innocent smile. “Who is your next victim, and do you really need me to tag along? I mean, if you can talk to me on your own, there aren’t many people left in this camp that you would be scared of.” her innocent smile turned into a smirk.
