So, the upcoming anti-privacy discord update. There's something very important I have to say, and I'll discuss why, the options you have, and something else important you can do that doesn't take any money or effort.
DO NOT EVER GIVE DISCORD OR ANYONE ELSE YOU DON'T TRUST PERSONALLY IDENTIFYING INFORMATION! THAT INCLUDES PICTURES OF YOU!
You might ask why, and that's because it can be used against you, and discord is run by narcs (no, this does not mean narcissist) who will easily give that information over to the pigs. You might think you're safe, that who cares if they have it, that's likely not the case. Because this information can be used for a number of things.
First and foremost, committing a crime. What constitutes a crime does not necessarily constitute something legal. For something mundane, did you know that adding money to parking meters is illegal in some US states, despite this having no negative impact beyond making it so pigs can't ticket as many people? Did you know that slavery is still legal in California? Odds are, you've committed a crime. If they want to target you, they can, now.
Second, if you're a part of a non-nazi protest at some point, or some other government-disapproved activity, if you were photograpphed without a mask or something else that fucks up photo recognition, this can be used to immediately find you. Even if you don't have a criminal record, they can just ask discord "hey, does this person use your service?" and suddenly they're able to ID you to harass you.
Third, let's say they just don't like you. Let's say you're racially profiled, queer (remember that tiktok is allowing the US government to track trans and non-binary individuals who use it), have a disability, or they just randomly decide you "look" wrong, again, they have an easy way to figure out who you are.
Fourth, let's just say you're someone on the internet who says vaguely left wing things and someone in power wants to intimidate you into stopping. Well, even if you've been pretty private, if they have a face, they now have an access to easily identifiable information.
Will this happen to you? Maybe. Likely not, but is that really preferable to having a 0% risk of this happening?
So, what can you do to stop this? Well, I don't know. It's not out yet, outside of the UK and Australia. We've seen them use Death Strading, or weirdly, Garry's Mod, but given that these are known, they could easily be fixed by now. However, one thing is true: people on the internet hate being told what to do, and workarounds will be found very quickly. Remember how every time youtube gets ahead of adblockers, it's fixed after a few days and goes away for well over a year? I give the worst case scenario a week. Realistically, a day or less. However, there's also something you can do to keep yourself safe and punish discord, and I'll detail it here. Just follow the red circles. I'm doing a break here because there's some tall images. Please click it, because this will do just as much, if not more than cancelling nitro.
First (if you're on mobile), open the list of servers, and tap the "you" on the bottom right.
Second (both desktop and mobile), click the gear. I'll show where it is on both desktop and mobile.
Next, click on data and privacy.
And turn ALL that shit off.
They absolutely hate this. Remember discord wrapped, a few months ago? They withheld information they easily have (your message count, times you used each emote, that stuff) if you put all of these off. That's a sign that they're legally obliged to listen, because why else would they punish you?
discord's new terms of service DO have a mandatory arbitration clause for the United States and Canada, you have 30 days to opt out by emailing an opt out notice to [email protected]. this has been your standard "for the love of god do not waive your right to a jury trial under any circumstances" notice
Here is a quick link to the new (Sept 29, 2025) arbitration clause and informal dispute resolution info. When they originally began implementing in 2018 Discord clarified your opt-out email doesn't need to follow any kind of template, but there are several options in the notes of this post. One thing I haven't seen anyone add is to make sure you're emailing from the email linked to your discord account. If you've already agreed to the terms of service you can still do this, and you've already opted out you probably should do it again just to err on the side of caution.

The real pain is that I am a mother who sees my children suffering every day without being able to do anything to save them. My children suffer from a rare skin disease (ichthyosis psoriasis), a cruel disease that causes their skin to crack, bleed, and burn with pain. They can't sleep, they can't play, they can't live like other children.
Their tiny bodies can't bear it anymore, and all I can do is hug them and try to hide my tears. $500 every three days, that's the price I need to ease his pain... but it's a sum I don't have, and I don't even have enough to feed them.
