☮︎ ★ “it's always the old to lead us to the wars
always the young to fall
now look at all we've won with the saber and the gun
tell me is it worth it all?”
phil ochs performs "i ain't marching anymore" on ctv's let's sing out, canada, september 27th, 1965
"Now as you may know I'm an old-timer- I go way back in time, back to the 60s, which were much different than today. Back in the 60s people used to get upset with things that were going on with the federal government. They used to- believe it or not, actually demonstrate in the streets. Course they don't- they don't do that anymore. To demonstrate in the streets is now passe and un-fashion-able. And not likely to get you any girls. And so... Today everything is cool, everybody's got their downers, their various gurus running around about town. But just for old times sake, I'd like to sing one of these old-time protest songs."
A previously uncirculated photo of Phil (from my knowledge). Here he's shown standing in front of a sold out poster of his January 7, 1966 Carnegie Hall concert — scanned from an original negative from my collection. This was more than likely taken in late December 1965. I assume the photographer was William "Popsie" Randolph, as these were found in his archive.
Yayyy…
Happy 85th, Phil 🤍

phil ochs sings "i ain't marching anymore" to a crowd of protesters at the democratic national convention in chicago who respond by burning draft cards, money, "underwear, and all other kinds of things that remind [them] of middle class american life," august 1968 ; footage from conventions: the land around us from the university of illinois political science film collection
