Today we have the honor of celebrating Chavela Vargas!
Born on April 17th, 1919 in San Joaquin de Flores, Heredia Province, Costa Rica, Chavela Vargas was a singer of Rancheras who's work helped spread different gender norms and gender expression for generations and influenced performers today.
While she rejected the term Lesbian for most of her life (and was even offended by it at times), her sexuality was somewhat of an open secret with rumors of her having relationships with people like Frida Kahlo and Ava Gardner. She came out publicly at the age of 81 in her autobiography titled Y Si Quieres Saber De Mi Pasado (And If You Want To Know About My Past).
