Well, I am the WORST, when it comes to getting to know new people and smalltalk. If I were in your situation, I would look out for clubs/munches/get togethers with likeminded people. I am sure, there are hangouts for lgbt-groups, sports-groups, movie-nights.. It's so much easier, when you go somewhere and you know, you have something to talk about
