I hate that the "x reader" or "x Y/N" style of fanfic has become sooooo popular, partially because it's just not for me and partially because they clog general non-fic related tags and those authors seem allergic to the "read more" function on this website, but ALSO because I believe that you should have to go through the trouble of creating an absolutely batshit self-insert character, with a backstory that makes no sense and a name that doesn't really gel with the aesthetics of the universe. Legolas and Aragorn should be in a love triangle with Kylie, the angsty sixteen year old half-human half-elf and inexplicable tenth member of the Fellowship. Do the WORK. If everyone was doing "Y/N" nonsense back in the day, there would be no Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way, or probably Bella Swan. These are important women. They deserve to be named, confusingly and with no regard for the fictional world they inhabit.

The thing about the Hive is that I don't think it's hiding any sinister intentions - I think that its "good" intentions ARE its sinister intentions. The Hive has taken the "good" intention of never killing and made it so cartoonishly literal and shallow that it has lost any legitimacy as a truly moral imperative. Like, a definition of killing that includes picking apples is not morally coherent. Their "thou shalt not kill" ethos is leading to mass death, but who really gives a shit about people dying? Not the Hive! The important thing is that everyone agrees that killing is wrong and that everyone avoids doing the wrong thing. If that indirectly leads to a lot of people dying - oh well. 🤷‍♀️ Isn't the breaking of a few billion eggs worth it to have such a beautiful and moral Consensus? It's true that people will starve, but they'll do it with a smile on their face! Isn't an existence without conflict so wonderful, so correct?

The only thing that the Hive finds genuinely distressing is the existence of voices outside of the beautifully perfect Consensus. The fact that Carol disagrees with their premise is so highly distressful that the Hive starts self-destructing whenever she gets too forceful about it. The Hive can pretty easily bear the cost of mass death, but what it can't bear at ALL is criticism. The Hive thinks it solved the trolley problem when it's actually just refusing to engage in any meaningful way in issues of ethics and reframing its refusal as evidence of its inherent goodness. Because conflict = evil, therefore avoidance of conflict = good

"Dude," Steve says, pressing on his eyes because he feels like he's about to cry. "What the fuck."

"What?" Dustin squeaks, alarmed. "What? Steve, you're freaking me out!"

"Good!" Because Steve just worked eighteen hours and it's past midnight and he got thrown up on twice and there was a bed pan incident and even though he showered at the hospital he probably smells awful and it rained and he lost his keys so he had to take the bus and he's sweaty and tired and wet and cold and Dustin's DnD friend is hot. "I can't believe you'd do this to me!" Okay, maybe Steve's feeling a little delirious.

"Do what??" Dustin is full on shrieking right now. His hot friend is standing in their apartment looking more and more worried and hot.

"You didn't tell me he was hot!"

The expressions that go across Dustin's face is impressive, before they stop and he settles on a flat glare. "Seriously??"

Hot guy is now blushing and Steve will collapse if he doesn't keep with the righteous fury.

"Whoa," whispers hot guy.

"I'm sorry," Dustin wails now, just as distraught. "You love nerds, all your favorite people are nerds, I don't know what I was thinking, oh my god!" He whirls on hot guy. "Eddie, give Steve your number right now!"

"Okay," says hot guy Eddie, immediately. His face is super red and his eyes are wide, and he looks scared out of his mind as he fumbles his pocket for his phone. "Yeah-Yep-Absolutely. This is a thing that's happening."

Steve, tears burning in his eyes, watches as Dustin punches his number into Eddie's phone. "Okay," he says a little nasally, wiping quickly at his face. "Okay, I'm going to shower and then sleep for two days, and then pretend like this never happened so I can look hot guy in the eye when he asks me on a date. Sound good?"
