cis versus trans*?

i've been using cis versus trans* for many years now, and from the very beginning i feel it gives no sense for me, and still i use it. therefore i wonder, if i'm against binaries, why do use and promote one? if i'm always advocating for intersex issues, how can i make it go together with this cis/trans* exclusionary binary?

for several years now i've been using the term trans* to talk about some people and cis to talk about some other people. now i feel this is a problem (in several ways, but here i will focus on one). if trans experiences are different and under an umbrella, how come cis experiences are not? do all cis people experience their gender and sex the same way? is diversity reserved to people using the label trans*?

are pronouns a preference?

in my previous post i talked about "preferred pronouns" and QPIC commented that pronouns aren't a question of preference, they simply are. and besides, calling them "preferred" can allow people to ignore them.

my first reaction was: yes, yes, i can see what you mean, and i just wrote those words because they seemed to be the most used to phrase what i was referring to when i checked them in google just before i posted mine.

and anyways, earlier i would have agreed with both points (pronouns are + other people cannot choose if they want to use them the way i ask), but now i have doubts.

of course i can see the problem with letting people believe that pronouns are a question of preference, and therefore not as important as when the just are (specially as some would believe pronouns for cis* people are). and this is exactly the same way as i can see why people are fighting for the right to be seen as "born this or that way" instead of "choosing to be this or that way". but is the fear of not being taken seriously a reason to comply or even recreate that specific narrative? that is what i now doubt.

or not even that, i'm sure i chose my pronouns. and if i chose them, some other people choose them. someone chose them for me when i was born, and later i chose for myself something different.

in fact, i've used several different pronouns during my life. my pronouns haven't been stable, on the contrary, they've changed together with my political ideas and my feelings.

on the other hand, i will always advocate for respecting the pronouns someone uses. if you ask to be addressed in a certain way, people have to respect it and do it. period.

my point in my previous post was something else... something more like "pronouns aren't everything".

Very intriguing post. I personally don’t use/like the “preferred” part of pronoun discussions. As someone pointed out to me, pronouns should not come down to preference, they just “are” so to speak. Mine are he/him/his, and putting “preferred” by that may allow a leniency that I would not enjoy dealing with.

first, i want to comment or reply after someone commented in my second post, but i can't see how.

second, i just changed the settings so people can comment, but i'm not sure that's enough, since it said something about "after two weeks of following me", but i want people to be able to comment right away. but how?

preferred pronoun round importance

so i just started my tumblr like i start every meeting i organize or attend, with a preferred pronoun round.

but lately i question myself every time i go through this. is it really so important to have these preferred pronoun rounds? do they make spaces safer for people like me? do i feel safer at those spaces when someone adresseses me as "it" but then says something that shows i'm being racialized by that same person respecting my pronoun? are my biggest problems coming from people not respecting my chosen pronoun?

i feel these pronoun rounds somehow are benefiting the queers without that many other problems. i mean, the queers that are not (that) oppressed by racism, ableism, classism, legal status and so on. by doing that, concentrating that much attention in using the right pronouns, it's creating a space where other issues and concerns are silenced.

it feels like every other (white middle class able-bodied neurotypical national) queer person i meet believes the space we're in is including and safer for everyone just by the fact of having people asking pronouns and wearing pronoun tags.

well, it is not. not for me.
