     “I – don’t believe you,” she says, except it’s in sing-song. Maaaybe it would lend some credibility to his daredevil stunt shit, but still! Lie detecting???? “What sort of – what sorts of things have. Uhhhhh. What sorts of things have I lied about, then.”

     “It - it doesn’t really matter if you believe me,”   Matt says, but he sounds irritated.   “And don’t even pretend you’re not almost as big a liar as he is. Miss ‘Oh, I can’t sing, haha, I’ve never even heard this hymn before.’”

    She makes a noncommittal noise. Whatever Odysseus wants to call himself isn’t her concern; sometimes some names fit better than others, after all. “Why don’t you think – Teodor is his real name?” 

     Because he seems equally comfortable with being called anything else. Or, frankly, more comfortable with his improv characters. Because they know nothing verifiable about his personal life. But all Matt says is,   “Lie detector. Remember?”

     “Well, the point is, he’s not supposed to like that.”

     That’s the whole thing about trying to be annoying! He’s not supposed to like it! He let her call him Odysseus once as a joke, and now it’s stuck, and it’s the worst thing he’s ever done. ( His words. )

     “But I mean. He hasn’t. Like. Stopped me. I guess. So.” A long pause. She looks at him. “Maybe? –Maybe I should like… switch it up. Call him. Something else.”

     “If he didn’t like it, I think I would have registered you calling him that before now,”   Matt says, confidently. The way he says it, it’s like he also thinks Teodor/Odysseus should be embarrassed. Like not being bothered is some kind of dirty secret.

     “You could call him by his real name. Bet that’d surprise him --- assuming you could figure it out.”

     “–Oh, it’s just like, a joke thing.”

     Matt’s description of liars makes her think that – well, Matt will just never know when she’s lying! Her heart rate changes a billion times a conversation. Are some things she says lies? Yes. But she also gets nervous about telling the truth. So who knows! Probably not Matt!

     Case in point: she can feel her pulse speed up right now!

     “He – uh, like, when I asked about his like, his, music name. He told me it was like. A joke or whatever. A – a thing. A. Play on – the Odysseus person. Character thing. And then – I like, decided to be annoying forever about it?”

  If she had said it aloud, he would reassure her that it’s fine, because there are a dozen other ways at least to tell if someone is lying, especially if that someone is Julie. Or maybe he wouldn’t actually tell her, but it would be kind of funny.

     “He just. Lets you call him by the name of a character from classical literature,”   he says, and tries not to make it sound like he’s questioning a witness. And what else did he tell you, Miss Sandgren? But it’s a weird nickname, Julie. It just is.   “He actually likes that?”
