It was always an asset to understand your partner’s strengths and weaknesses. That way, you could compensate for each other’s shortcomings, if the need ever arose to fight side-by-side.

Sliding a foot back, Blake assumed a brief stance of poise, before wasting no time in launching herself at him. Being so aggressive wasn’t her typical style, but she needed to work on a few things and her assertiveness in combat was one of them. Tearing her sword from its bladed sheath, her moves were quick, precise, and relentless. It would test how efficiently he could overcome her speed and finesse.

True perfection was a nigh impossible dream, there will always be things to improve upon.

Onyx had just finished settling into his own fighting stance when she suddenly went on the offensive. A surprise, but given they both preferred to be quick and agile when fighting he was quick to block and dodge the onslaught of strikes. However the advantage of having a second weapon in the form of her sheath meant Onyx had to work overtime. Stuck on the defensive while he carefully searched for an opportunity to halt her momentum, or even use it against her.

Removing the tungsten blade from its press at his throat, Blake rose up onto her knees, sheathing the weapon at her back and staring down at the other with amusement in her eyes. “Only because you seem distracted.”

A hand flattened against his chest, the other rising up to swipe the back of her wrist against her sweat-damp forehead. Even as she accused him, her golden gaze was playful and her voice was tinged with affection, “You’re too polite when we spar. That’s why you lose. You should fight me as if your life depends on it.”

Onyx let out a heavy sigh as her blade left his neck, relaxing against the floor beneath his back. His chest rising and falling beneath her hand as he caught his breath. "I'll have you know, I was one hundred percent focused on you and you alone."

Letting go of his sword, he let it rest on the ground nearby as he brushed damp hair and sweat out of his face. Her accusation making him scoff in mock indignation "Is that so? Well I'm sorry for trying to keep chivalry alive... So, shall we go again? Or do you wanna call it here for today?"

Her head tipped back and she let out a full, hearty laugh at his explanation, “Chivalry has no place on the battlefield.” Even though her words were tinged with laughter, there was a stony truth behind them. One she had learned the hard way.

But she wasn’t about to foul-up the mood with talk of dismal subjects. Instead, she rose up, a booted foot anchoring herself, as she reached down to help him up. “I’d much rather you tear me up than to go easy on me. Because I’m not about to spare you any quarter in here. Let’s go again.”

Though he had not learned it like she had, he knew she was right. Chivalry was just an easy excuse to mask the distant fear of loosing another person he cared about. Or at the very least the possibility he might seriously injure them. “Very true.”

Following her lead he grabbed his sword and took her hand, rising to his feet with her help. “If for some strange reason I have to seriously fight you to the death, something has gone very wrong. But you’re right of course. So I'll give you my all this time.” 

His eyes close briefly as he takes a moment to clear his mind. Before promptly readying himself for their next bout.
