Join us for THE 20th ANNUAL SUMMERGEN!!!

Summergen is an annual exchange of gen Supernatural fanworks. (It's been running every year since 2007, which makes this its twentieth round!) Participants each create a fanwork—a fic of at least 1,000 words, or an equivalent piece of art—based on a prompt submitted by another participant, and also receive a fanwork that was created based on one of the prompts that they have submitted. One fanwork is revealed per day, with creators remaining anonymous until the end-of-event reveal. It's a summer full of gen delights for all to enjoy!

2026 Summergen Timeline

June 1 – June 14: Sign-ups.

June 15: Assignments sent out.

July 21: Fanworks due. There is an automatic one-week grace period following this deadline. If you need just a few more days, assume you have 'em.

July 28: Deadline for withdrawals or extension requests. If we don't hear from you by midnight of the last inhabited time zone (Samoa Time Zone, UTC +13), you will be in-default and at risk for not participating next year.

July 29: Posting begins!

I don't put much stock in what the actor men say because actors rarely watch their own shows, especially not a 15 season one. He's only aware of his own scenes for the most part. I put more stock in the writers takes which we know put in romantic parallels on purpose.

Also, you can't hurt me with seeing it as non-romantic because I'm aromantic and a platonic bond/soulmate still has a whole lot of weight.

But can we all agree comparing a queer ship to incest is an absolutely horrible opinion to share?? Can someone sit them down and explain that at the very least? I assure you the queer fans are not the ones shipping brothers.

He compared two m/m ships, one of which is an incest ship.

Like it or not, Destiel is just a ship just like Wincest is just a ship. They are both fictional ships based off of the relationships presented in the actual show. Neither of them was any more canon than the other. Because if we're talking about the writers putting in romantic parallels then we are also, very much talking about Wincest, too. The show is FILLED with Sam and Dean being compared to romantic couples, and being mistaken as a gay couple. It happens a few times a season, including during the first three seasons before Cas was introduced.

If you like imagining that Cas and Dean were actually in love love, that's fine, but that was no more a part of the show than Sam and Dean being in love love.

So what Jensen said was that Destiel is just a ship, just like Wincest is just a ship. And then he said that he is fine with fans shipping the characters and thinks it's great that we find inspiration in the show to create so many stories based off it.

But y'all need to get down off your high horse, your ship is no better or more morally pure than any other. The puritanical conflation of fiction somehow equaling reality has gotten beyond ridiculous at this point.

Nah, OP, we can’t agree. Because the point Jensen was making sailed right over your head. I get it; you don’t like Wincest. This is fair. But that’s not what Jensen was saying, writ large. He was reiterating that a ship is a fanfiction convention and as such, doesn’t automatically relate to the canon. Because in fandom, we write/draw what we please. I personally wish we’d leave the cast/crew’s say-so out of fandom’s doings. And clearly, so does Jensen. But sometimes, you get what you ask for, but not in the way you want it…
