[ Rachel definitely doesn´t stare at her phone waiting for an answer. Nope. ]
Rachel: Of course. I´ll just put your name on the list, if you don´t find the time just send me a text.
Rachel: Just so I know if I can come out to see the fans or wait for you.
Lucy: Well I certainly don't want to keep you from your fans.
Texts // Faberry
Rachel: Well it´s all good then.
Rachel: And I´m looking forward to hearing what you think about the show.
Rachel: You´re welcome to come backstage after the show if you like.
Rachel: Waiting by the stage door in this weather isn´t always comfortable. I´ll have your name put on the list if you like.
[ a long pause as Lucy considers how she provide herself an out without being rude ]
Lucy: I'll consider it.
Lucy: It'll depend on what my schedule looks like for the next day and if I need to get home and in bed sooner rather than later.
Texts // Faberry
Rachel: Your assumption is correct.
Rachel: My treat. And don´t worry. We get them at a reasonable price. There´s always tickets they´ll hold back for rush. So yours will be one of those.
Rachel: The only advantage is you don´t have to line up at the crack of dawn to get them. ;)
Lucy: I appreciate that as I'm not much of a morning person.
Lucy: Thanks, Rachel. I look forward to seeing what you and your castmates can do on stage.
Texts // Faberry
Rachel: Noted. You´ll get the seat you prefer.
Rachel: And please, it´s on me.
Lucy: I assume if I try to insist on paying I'll be ignored, yes?
Texts // Faberry
Rachel: Please.
Rachel: I´m the star of the show.
Rachel: If my friends want front row center that´s what they´re going to get. :P
Lucy: I actually prefer center, but about halfway back in the orchestra.
Lucy: So if you can make that work, or as close to it for Thursday, that would be wonderful.
Lucy: And please let me know how much.
Texts // Faberry
Rachel: No problem. We do 8 shows a week so it´s not like you´re running out of time.
Rachel: Thursday evening works just fine! Any particular seat you´d like?
Lucy: [ teasing ] Oh, do you have the sway to pick and choose whatever you wish?
Texts // Faberry
Rachel: Hey!
Rachel: It´s Rachel.
Rachel: In case you didn´t know.
Rachel: I was just wondering what day would be best for you in terms of seeing the show!
[ Lucy rolls her eyes. Not that she'd admit to Rachel, but she's had her number saved ever since Rachel's claim of having accidentally called her instead of Biff. ]
Lucy: Hi, Rachel. And apologies for not having gotten back to you sooner.
Lucy: Does Thursday evening work in terms of ticketing?

It was just a slight change in Quinn´s attitude and body language, but it sparked a glimmer of hope if Rachel´s chest. She couldn´t say what she was expecting, nothing intimate of course, she was engaged after all, but maybe they could be friends? Because thinking back on that night she hadn´t just enjoyed the sex, but also the conversations. They had talked all night after all. And a part of Rachel thought that they might not have agreed to come the next year just for sex.
At the mention of Quinn coming to her show she entire face lit up and she turned to give the other woman a smile. “Of course. It´s the hit of the season!” she then told her with a nod. “I´ll reserve you a ticket. Just let me know the date,” At the door Rachel stopped for a moment and turned.
“Unless…you want to bring someone?” she wasn´t sure why exactly she was dreading the answer to that question, so Rachel pushed the thought aside. “Then I can, of course, reserve you two tickets.”
Lucy was happy this unscheduled lunch meeting would be short as Rachel packed up her things while they talked and then headed toward the door. She thought she was nearly in the clear, that all she’d have to do was offer a simple wave and then peace and quiet would once more settle over the space of her office, but at the door Rachel hesitated. And under normal circumstances Rachel’s additional question would be nothing more than common courtesy; people often attended shows in pairs or groups so it wasn’t out of the norm to inquire. However, there was something in Rachel’s tone, or perhaps it was the way in which her posture shifted just so, that found Lucy carefully choosing her words, words that didn’t reveal much about a life she kept close to her chest.
“One ticket will be just fine, Rachel. Thank you.” And with that, Lucy did offer a wave in Rachel’s direction. “I’ll text you soon with a free evening. Have a good rest of your day.”

Rachel smiled at the memory of having last spent more than a day in the place she´d grown up in. She was thankful for the opportunity to be on Broadway, and more so to live in Manhattan, a place she loved dearly, but she did miss the quiet every now and then.
“Yes,” She then answered. “There´s a small footbridge and a pavillion with lights. There´s quite a few fairy lights there actually.” She nodded. “And a great restaurant right opposite the harbor. You can see the water if you sit at the front windows,” She added as she finished her salad and put the empty container back into the bag she´d brought with her. “You should come see the show, you know?” Rachel then added once more as she got up. “It´s a really good one, and not just because I`m in it,”
Lucy stared at her salad. She shifted the greens back and forth to give the impression she was eating, but her appetite left right about the same time the memories Lucy had been holding back for weeks decided to flood in. And really Rachel’s voice, the melodic rhythm as she spoke only aided Lucy’s transportation back to that night, back to when it was Quinn and Rachel and nothing else.
Time hadn’t mattered then and expectations were left outside the door along with the ‘Do Not Disturb’ tag. And between rounds of making each other curse and squirm and come undone, they had shared. Rachel had told Quinn about her star on the rise, and to be perfectly honest Quinn chalked it up to nothing more than an inflated exaggeration. No one could be as talented as Rachel claimed, but here in this moment, confidence oozed out of Rachel now just as it had six years ago. And just as it had six years, Lucy (or perhaps Quinn) felt a sudden rush along her spine that slammed into her heart. The words were out of her mouth before she could think twice.
“Well, if you’re in it.”

“True, but what´s the point if you´re unhappy with where you are?” Rachel asked before taking another bite. She could have very well gone to LA, or even to London, to be what she had wanted to be since she could think, and maybe she would for a short stint, but her heart belonged to New York City and it always would. She had adored the quietness of Long Island, but had always begged her father to take her into the city.
Rachel glanced up and for a moment, was at a loss for words, because she hadn´t assumed Quinn would ever acknowledge their night from all those years ago again. She offered a smile. “Yes…it´s a lovely place. It´s my home. And Cold Spring Harbor really is beautiful to watch the sunset at.”
There was no point in explaining how Lucy could be critical of the city she was currently working and living in, but that didn’t mean she was unhappy. Emotions didn’t have to be that black and white. But perhaps Rachel -- like Lucy’s own father -- didn’t see the word that way, but for Lucy so much of her life came in shades of gray.
“Against the backdrop of the ocean, right?”

Rachel picked up some more of her salad, shaking her head. “You´re awfully pessimistic, you know?” She then asked back as she glanced over at the other woman. “You seem to be great at your job, so I`m sure you could have had offers all over the country, good jobs in a, as you call it, less garbage filled, environment, why pick New York then?”
Rachel truly wondered why Quinn had come here. If she did hate New York so much, and if it did remind her of the affair they´d had, why had she taken the job?
“It is. Though you really should go see Long Island. It´s more urban and while you can still have a good meal in one of the restaurants in the towns you can also take long walks there.”
Lucy’s eyes rolled. “Refusing to drink the Kool-Aid and wear rose-colored glasses doesn’t make me pessimistic. It makes me a realist.” And because she was a realist, Lucy had no issues admitting, “I am very good at my job. I strive to be the best.” She stabbed at a piece of lettuce. “And while yes, I could have likely worked in any number of firms, not all of them would have offered me junior partnership, nor had the reputation of this company. Plus, I’m only a few hours from home.”
After eating a few bites of salad, which Lucy did find delicious, though she wasn’t about to offer that information up to Rachel, she continued, though her voice was softer, a bit clouded by memories that were coming to the surface without her permission. “I remember you talking about Long Island.”

“Of course,” Or maybe she hadn´t actually thought of Biff while buying it. Maybe she had subconsciously thought about someone else. Herself, of course. Who else would Rachel be thinking about? “He does like a good salad every now and then. Especially if he´s got a busy day and he´s up on his feet a lot. Wouldn´t want him to have something that´s heavy to the stomach to slow him down,” She threw Quinn a smile.
“Oh come on, New York is a beautiful city.” She then replied, shaking her head. “You just need someone to give you the right tour. Broadway, the lights, the amazing toy store in Times Square, a lovely lunch down in Chinatown, the retail market at Arthur Avenue. A stroll through Central Park just when the sun is rising, the Edgar Allen Poe Cottage or a trip to Long Island, watching the sun set in Cold Spring Harbor,” Rachel´s smile became a little softer before she picked up a fork and took a bite of her salad.
Lucy was too tired to point out the fallacy in Rachel’s logic that if Biff did enjoy a hearty salad on days he was busy, he’d be making time to eat lunch with Rachel right now. But her Rachel sat, in her office, taking up her time instead.
“You and I have very different definitions of beautiful. Times Square is crowded and gaudy, as is the rest of Manhattan, which includes the rats and the garbage on the street.” At least it was winter, which meant that the smells the humidity of summer only seemed to intensify, would be at bay for a few more months.
“Central Park is nice.” Lucy had to concede that if did offer a reprieve from what she most often didn’t enjoy about the city.

Rachel couldn´t even quite say why she was so insistent of wanting to be friends with Quinn. Or Lucy. Maybe it was the fact of having been stood up. Maybe not. She had enjoyed the other´s company that night and even if she hadn´t expected an actual relationship Rachel had felt understood, like she could talk to Quinn about everything, and she had been looking forward to seeing her again.
Now they had reunited, even if it was under different circumstances, and she didn´t want to let Quinn go a second time.
She cleared her throat and threw the other a smile. “Alright well, tell me about yourself then, Lucy. What made you come back to New York? Just the job? Or was it a town you always wanted to work in?” Rachel opened the lunch bag she had brought and took out the salads, holding one out to Quinn.
Did Lucy immediately regret giving in? Yes, yes she did. Because apparently in doing so she inadvertently gave Rachel some sign that the other woman had interpreted as an all-clear to make camp at her desk and offer up the lunch Lucy had so far refused. And when Rachel pulled out two salads, Lucy’s eyes narrowed. “You brought Biff salad for lunch?” If she wasn’t skeptical of Rachel’s initial intentions before, now she believed even less than before that there weren’t ulterior motives behind this visit.
Still, resigned to the fact that the only way she’d be able to get rid of Rachel and get back to her work once she indulged the other woman, Lucy closed the open book on her desk, and not wanting to get any dressing or a stray piece of vegetation on its cover, shifted it to the side. She took the offered salad with a sigh. “The job offer was the draw.” Lucy would have been content to leave her answer as just that, but something told her it wouldn’t suffice for Rachel. “I’ve lived in Boston all my life so it’s not like I had a call to live in a large, loud, and dirty city.”

“Well you certainly act like you do,” Rachel replied with a shake of her head. She didn´t quite understand what was going on and why they had gotten off on the wrong foot this time. Surely, she might have been a little over the top when she´d seen Quinn again, but she´d made up for that by being nice, hadn´t she? She wasn´t upset over Quinn not showing up, so why was Quinn so upset with her? Rachel shook her head as she glanced back at the other.
“Well,” She then added. “Can I be friends with Lucy then? Because I don´t care what you say, we did get on very well.”
Getting on very well was an understatement.
For days after their night together, each time Lucy undressed and looked in a mirror she saw a reminder -- a bruised love bite, a lingering red line of a scratch -- Rachel left behind. They eventually faded, of course, and as they did Lucy forced herself to pack away thoughts of a girl and night where all her walls came down. Because they didn’t just sleep together. They talked. They shared secrets. Dreams and wishes. Lucy knew she’d never opened up to anyone else like that since, which was why Rachel’s request scared her now. To protect herself, it would be so much easier to maintain the hard line she’s drawn between them. Lucy had full power right now, and allowing Rachel (back) into her life meant giving up some of that control. But Lucy was certain Rachel’s persistent hounding wasn’t about to stop anytime soon, especially with Biff serving as a connection between them.
“Fine.” Perhaps if she agreed to a ‘friendship,’ Lucy could better manage unwanted drop-ins and phone calls and proposed lunch dates.

Rachel glanced up before coming a little bit closer and placing the bag with the food onto the desk. That was a good question. What did she want from Quinn? There were different answers to that questions, and not all of them would be liked by either of them. So Rachel opted for the easiest one and pushed the others into the back of her mind.
“To at least act like you don´t hate me?” She then answered with a slight shrug. “I mean…you act like I did God knows what to you. Or as if I´m a terrible person. I simply wanted to be friends,”
“I can’t hate you because I don’t know you.” Lucy didn’t say it to be hurtful, but rather to be truthful. One night of passion years ago didn’t equate to either of them knowing the other. But Lucy couldn’t address the rest of Rachel’s words because it would mean acknowledging some truth to the statement. The truth that seeing Rachel again after all these years brought to the surface complicated memories and feelings about her own self-worth and self-love. Lies she told herself and her family. The Lucy she kept hidden away.
“And you want to be friends with a phantom from six years ago. I’m not Quinn.” Lucy was quick to shake her head at her own wording. “Well, I am, but I’m not her. I’m not the girl from that night, Rachel.”

Rachel glanced up at Quinn. “What if I didn´t?” She then asked quietly, but only for a moment. She was quick to return to her normal, chipper self, since she knew Quinn wasn´t ready to at least be friends. Which was funny, since Rachel should have been the one holding the grudge. She´d been the one who´d gotten dumped. But it was all in the past. She wasn´t upset about that as much, more about the fact that, for some reason, Quinn was trying to pretend like nothing had ever happened between them.
“Fine, if you don´t want it then I`m giving it to the receptionist. But don´t complain that you´ve skipped out on lunch because of too much work. You guys do that a lot. Work too much and forget to take care of yourselves,”
“My work-life balance isn’t of your concern. I shouldn’t be of your concern.” Rachel’s quiet comment hadn’t gone unheard by Lucy, and once it settled in and she processed it, the words took the wind out of her sails. Lucy’s shoulders sagged and her steps were slower as she returned to her desk, putting space -- and a barrier -- between herself and Rachel.
Lowering herself into her chair, Lucy exhaled a heavy sigh. “What do you want from me?”
